1 ,, 8 Newsletter No. 27 - Term 3 Week 7 30 August 2018 From the Acting Principal What a marvellous week we are having! Student Led Conferences Thank you to all our families who attended this week’s Student Led Conferences. We trialled a new format for these conferences and have received some terrific feedback from parents, students and staff and walking through the classrooms it was very affirming to hear some amazing student led discussions. I would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Hopkins and all our teaching staff for the research and work they put into preparing the new format and ensuring that our students had agency over the process. Mrs Hopkins will be spending some time reflecting with staff, students and parents about the process over the next week and will share her findings with you in next week’s newsletter. Father’s Day Stall Thank you to our magnificent Parents & Friends Committee for their efforts in organising and hosting a fabulous Father’s Day Stall, there are going to be a lot of very spoilt Dads this Sunday! 2018 Book Week Celebrations Our Book Week celebrations have been fabulous so far, all our classes have been reading and reviewing the nominated CBCA books and have all decided on their personal favourites. Our children were treated to a very interactive and exciting visit from nominated author, Patrick Guest, on Wednesday. As Pat read his book, The Ricker Racker Clubaloud, students were invited to act out scenes from the book and the library was filled with fun and laughter and some periods of deeper reflection and vulnerability as some more complex themes were explored. I would like to say a very big thank you to the Hicks family for putting us in contact with Pat. We will continue celebrating Book Week tomorrow with our dress up day and parade, and a very special performance incorporating several of the CBCA nominated books, entitled TREASURE HUNT!

National Science Week The excitement of Science Week is still bubbling at Kalinda. Congratulations to all our wonderful inventors who received prizes at assembly on Monday.

This week our Grade 1/2 Students explored ‘forces in action’ as they participated in a Mad About Science incursion. The incursion allowed them to investigate how forces and movement work in hands-on science activities.

Mixing Science and Literacy… At Kalinda we are really passionate about creating lifelong writers and students who just love to write. Lucy H. in 1/2A is completely mad about pandas! She recently saw a movie about pandas and was so interested that she wrote to a scientist in China who works with Giant Pandas. The scientist really enjoyed reading Lucy’s letter and he wrote straight back to her. They now write regularly to each other, sharing their ideas about the best way to care for these gorgeous endangered animals. What a fabulous example of writing about something you are passionate about! Keep up the great writing Lucy!

Finally, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful weekend and all the Dads in our Kalinda Community a very special Father’s Day on Sunday! ERIN NORMAN ACTING PRINCIPAL

2018 PARENT OPINION SURVEY – CLOSING THIS SUNDAY! WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK! Recently, a random selection of parents were invited to participate in this year’s Parent Opinion Survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. The Parent Opinion Survey has now been extended to Sunday 2nd September. We would very much appreciate parents completing the survey, which only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. The information gained from this survey will help us to plan curriculum programs for the next few years. Please feel free to ring us if you would like more information.

2019 ENROLMENTS If there are any families already at Kalinda that have younger brothers or sisters starting in 2019, and who have not yet been enrolled, please come in to the office and pick up a Student Enrolment Form as soon as possible. If your family is intending to leave Kalinda at the end of the year, or before, please let us know by email to [email protected] or send in a note to the office. It would be very much appreciated if this could be done as soon as possible so that grades for next year can be organised. We will soon be planning classes for 2019 and need to know final numbers before the end of this term.

”Science is Mad” Incursion Recount. On Monday, 27th August in the Multi Purpose room, my grade went to see an awesome, super incursion by Mad about Science. I learnt a lot about science while we were there, which included buddy forces, gravity and how the ground holds and doesn’t just fall.

This is how buddy forces work: if a car went straight down a hill the car would be cutting through the wind. The car would still be going the way it started but the wind would want it to come back.

Then we got a go at spinning a stick. You needed to get the momentum going and you could turn it to confuse it, and then the spinner stick would stop. We also go to use a spinny top with a beyblade type of thing.

Next we used different surfaces and tested toy cars on foil, carpet, wood and sandpaper. Wood was the fastest, foil the second , sandpaper the third, and carpet was the slowest friction with a car.

In the next experiment, we tested four balls in salted water and then just plain water to see what would float or sink.

Finally, we used small magnets to test the pulling forces on a slinky. We had a great day and learnt a lot! Cade H. – 1/2F

JAPANESE NEWS

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

FOR TERM 4, 2018 We are very fortunate to have an Intern arriving in early October to stay with our Kalinda families for Term 4, 2018. Her name is Ms Noriko Sato. Noriko is an elementary school teacher in Tokyo. Noriko would like to teach our students about Japanese culture, modern and traditional life in Japan, origami, Japanese cuisine and traditional children’s games. We ask host families to provide a room and food for an intern. It is an intern’s responsibility to organize holidays. Host families like to share their weekends with the intern though. The intern pays a small weekly fee to the host family to help cover the cost to stay. Usually the children are exposed to Japanese culture and make a good, lasting friendship. Previous interns still keep in touch with their host families. We would appreciate your support again for our International Internship Program. If you have any questions regarding the program, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.
