From Sue
Grounds Development
Work has commenced on the development of our new hard court space which
will include:
a basketball/netball court
a rebound wall and court area
sections of new asphalt
artificial grass
new garden beds
retainer walls
fencing to enclose the oval
As you can see the children are keen to see the project come to fruition. This
development will take just under 3 months to complete. Obviously during this
time the area will be fenced off to ensure play and sporting activities are
conducted safely.
Musical Soiree
Last Wednesday the second of our school soirees was conducted at the Alan Lawrence Theatre at McKinnon
Secondary College. We had children from prep to Year 6 performing, all demonstrating their love of music
and sharing their talents with us. The school band and string ensembles performed early in the program and
provided an impressive start to a rich and varied range of musical performances. One of my favourite images
from the soiree is watching some of our younger children playing piano but being far too short for their feet to
reach the pedals. It is also lovely to have a number of children singing. We have quite a few children with
beautiful voices and this venue is ideal for children to showcase their talents.
My sincere thanks go to:
our Music and Band Captains who were the MCs for the night: Elise Bergman, Lachie Briggs, Isabella
Warner and Jack Olivier. Our leaders did a magnificent job and ensured the evening flowed smoothly
to the parents who organised, set up and served refreshments on the night
Owen Bowditch, Wilson Young, Ling Lee and Judy van Pelt who provided terrific back stage assistance
The parents and music teachers who accompanied the children – special thanks to Greta de Bell and Pete
Pascoe
Lana Zaidenberg for her efforts with rehearsing and conducting the string ensembles
Dario Ogrin for working with and conducting the school band
Traci Cenedese for her time devoted to meticulous organisation, preparation, auditions and rehearsals
Finally our very talented children who provided a very enjoyable night’s entertainment – congratulations
to all of our musicians!
Friendship Captains
Our two Friendship Captains Josh Boulton in 5/6E - Wollemi and Eliza Planincic in 5/6F – Red Tingle
addressed the Hampton Rotary Club dinner last night to provide a summary of their year as captains and the
impact the role has had on them personally. This was a lovely occasion because family members were invited to
attend and share in this celebratory occasion. Josh and Eliza decided to prepare and deliver their speeches as a
duo. This approach undoubtedly impressed the audience, however more so was their conviction and commitment
to promoting friendship, demonstrating kindness, thoughtfulness and preparedness to give of their time. I
congratulate Josh and Eliza who have been wonderful ambassadors for Hampton Primary all year and particularly
so last night in an official capacity. I have invited Josh and Eliza to present their speeches at next week’s
assembly.
The 2015 Friendship Captains will be elected by the children in the senior grades this year and the successful
recipients will be announced on Tuesday 16 December at assembly.
Trivia Night
Our Trivia night was scheduled slightly later than usual this year with the intention of capitalising on the
Brighton Town Hall as a venue and also entering into early Christmas spirit evident in the red and green colour
scheme. Whilst we struggled somewhat with the PA system, this did not appear to dampen spirits in any way.
There was a very apparent energetic atmosphere obvious on the night with many community members enjoying
the opportunity of catching up with friends and having some fun. Ingenuity was on show with some of the
costumes worn. There were some terrific items up for silent auction and many of winning bidders secured a
bargain. We are continuing to receive bids for the larger pieces of art work that were for auction. The live
auction, balloon raffle and ordinary raffle generated a good result. In typical Hampton form there was much
laughter and raucous chat right throughout the trivia section and for the remainder of the night. Apart from being
a fabulous night of fun, this event generated over $13,000 profit and this will be allocated to the grounds
development project that is now underway!
The Fundraising Committee was the driving force behind the event and I extend my gratitude and sincere thanks
to the members of the team including: Kylie Jones, Fiona Gathercole, Sarah Rowley, Hannah Jenns, Sharon
Fulton, Melinda Pordage, Justine Tuffley, Will McGowan, Wendy Anthony, Samantha Schwarz, Taryn Weis and
Kirsty Hunt. The team spent much time on devising ideas to maximise enjoyment for all.
School Fees
This week we have received a number of payments for school fees for 2015, thank you to the many families who
have done so. Please organise for payments to be made by this Friday 28 November or make contact with the
school to discuss a payment plan.
Student Initiative
Mason O’Keefe, Libby Ferguson and Piper Roberts all from Prep A – Blue Gums have been working hard to
raise money for our new basketball and netball court. Mason brought 90 cents; he saved his change from a treat
that he bought at the Snack Shack. Libby brought $3 from her piggy bank that she has been saving up. Piper
brought $20 from her birthday money to school to contribute to the basketball and netball court project. Well
done to our generous spirited preps – Mason, Libby and Piper!
Assembly
I extend my thanks to 5/6E - Wollemi who led the singing of the national anthem at assembly yesterday.
Well done to Harry Curtis from 5/6E who performed ‘I am a believer’ on keyboard. Harry played this with
excellent rhythm, dynamics and confidence.
School Awards
Congratulations go to the following people who received an academic award yesterday at assembly:
Joshua Eddey from 3B - Ironbarks for displaying outstanding ability in reading, relishing all challenges
and approaching school with enthusiasm

Whooping Cough (Pertussis) There have been a number of confirmed cases of whooping cough at the school. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is an infection of the respiratory tract and is very easily spread by coughing and sneezing. Unfortunately you can still get whooping cough even though you have been immunised against it. Often the symptoms are less severe when you have been immunised. You can remain fairly well and just display the coughing symptom.
Whooping cough is a contagious respiratory infection which begins just like a normal cold until over the course of a week the characteristic cough begins. The cough becomes severe with bouts of uncontrolled spasmodic coughing. The whooping sound can be heard on inhalation with most people, but not always. Vomiting at the end of a coughing bout is common and young children can have episodes where they go blue and stop breathing. It is much more severe in young babies and children than adults.
The symptoms are often associated with lethargy, dehydration and poor appetite. As the weeks go by the cough gradually disappears but can take a while. It is often known as the 100 day cough.
If whooping cough is suspected see your GP. They will generally take a swab from the child’s throat or nose to test for it. If your child has whooping cough you must keep your child home from school until antibiotic treatment has started and for 5 days after. This exclusion period has been set by the national government as whooping cough is a communicable/infectious disease.
Please encourage your children to cover their nose when they sneeze and mouth when they cough. Most importantly also ensure they wash their hands thoroughly. Some new research has also shown that encouraging children to cough and sneeze into their elbow sleeve can prevent the spread of germs as this area of the body does not touch everything else like hands do.
Children less than 7 years of age who have not been vaccinated are at high risk of developing whooping cough. If they are in the same room with a child diagnosed with whooping cough they will need to be excluded from school for 14 days after the last exposure, or until they have taken the first 5 days of a course of appropriate antibiotics. This exclusion is required by law under the public Health and Wellbeing legislation.
If you have any concerns please come and see us or contact your GP.
Keep safe and healthy
