China: Growth vs. Stability; Eurasia; Vanishing Ice

September 23, 30, October 7 9/23: Growth vs. stability is China's

emerging challenge. Xi will tread a fine line keeping his country moving and his people happy.

9/30: Eurasia will be the area where China's economic dreams, the Belt and Road Initiative, confront political realities, Russia's and India's spheres of influence.

10/7: A major environmental challenge that China will grapple with is its vanishing ice. As glaciers that surround the Tibetan Plateau continue to melt it will affect most of China's rivers whose sources are in these glaciers.

In her award-winning poetry, Mary Oliver explored the fine line between the ordinary and the extraordinary. She de-scribed the visible natural world and suggested a gateway into the invisible realm. “Pay attention. Be amazed. Tell about it.” she announced, and so, we will sample selected poetry and prose from her 23 volumes.

November 4 The Baroque Period was one of exciting new forms of music, from the fugue to the concerto grosso and the oratorio to the opera. Its most famous composers stretch from Bach and Vivaldi to Purcell and Handel. Handel’s Messiah may be his most famous oratorio, but with his dramatic genius, he also composed the Water Music, operas, and a piece that has been played at every British royal coronation since George II.

Shakespearean Romance: The Winter’s Tale

This play, one of Shakespeare’s last, is also one of his most moving, powerful, and innovative. Class sessions will int-errelate two (or more) film versions of the play with active discussions. We will also explore the development of Shake-speare’s career and its culmination in this tragic-comic masterpiece. Kerry Brown taught Shakespeare to high school students for 45 years and more recently to adults for the last 16 years in the Eldredge Public Library and Snow Library.

It also looks at the failed negotiations between Japan and the U.S. that led to Pearl Harbor. When you walk, you are taken to another place, whether alone or with others. The place from where you leave is either memorable or random, but along the way you are transported to an emotional plane that calls on all your senses. Adventure walking at any age changes the equation in that the un-knowns out weigh the known and like a mathematical equation, with many vari-ables, solving is a multi-step process.

James K. Polk, the eleventh President of the U.S., may be the most con-sequential president about which Amer-icans know little. He succeeded in getting his political program enacted and resolved the Oregon Boundary Dis-pute. But his conduct leading to the War with Mexico, 1846-48, was aggressively challenged by contemporaries Abraham Lincoln and John Quincy Adams and subsequently by many respected histo-rians, on grounds of political dishonesty, imperialism, and waging unjust war. This class will evaluate all aspects of President Polk’s public career.

The Ocean Twilight Zone - The Urgent Quest to Explore

11/1: The Ocean Twilight Zone Simon R. Thorrold Ph.D., Senior Scien-tist- Woods Hole Oceanographic Insti-tute (WHOI), Dept. of Biology--Research Gate, takes us on a journey to explore and understand one of our planet’s hid-den frontiers -- the ocean twilight zone. This part of the ocean is 660 to 3,300 ft. below the surface where little sunlight can reach. It is deep, cold and the pres-sures are enormous. Despite these challenging conditions, the twilight zone teems with life that helps support the ocean’s food web and is intertwined with the Earth’s climate. 11/8: Explorer’s Eye on the Deep Sea Join Bruce Strickrott, WHOI’s Certified Deep Submergence Vehicle Pilot of the famed deep-sea sub, Alvin, on a discov-ery journey of deep-ocean exploration. The Navy gave Alvin to WHOI in 1998, where Alvin underwent major upgrades from 2010-2013. With enhanced capa-bilites, enjoy stunning video from the deep. Learn about the importance of human presence in this largely-unex-plored frontier; and, about the future of human-piloted diving operations with Alvin. This legendary submersible and other game-changing technologies are significantly improving the way ocean environments are studied.

American playwright Arthur Miller's first Broadway play was a failure, but his next, “All My Sons”, insured that his voice was heard and launched his ca-reer. We'll look at Miller's background, the state of the American theatre in the l940's, and the qualities of this play, which continues to be produced today. 11/7: Miller's early career and what

led to the writing of the play. 11/14: How a director develops a

production concept.11/21: Scenes from various productions

plus the new Broadway revival.
