FOL Board Notes !!

From the Director’s Desk…

Dear Friends,

I must express the immeasurable grati-tude I have for Linda Younts, Carla South, Kenneth Watkins, Dennis Milford, Sherry Estes and David Alexander for the innu-merable hours of “Grunt” work they put in

to make the 2010, 2011 and 2012 sales successful. I also appreciate the hours other Friends put in as they could, David Alexander has agreed to Chair the 2013 Book Sale and Dennis has agreed to be his chief “grunt” I will remain on the Book Sale Committee as FOL Treasurer. The FOL will need all the help YOU can offer to make the 2013 Sale the best yet! Jerry Porter

Computer training is off to a good start. At-tendance is strong at our Basic Computer classes with good attendance at

Friends Insider Information !!

Sherry Estes was approved at the May General Membership Meeting to assume the role of President of The Friends of the Atlanta Public Library. She recently retired from the Texas Highway Department and was very involved in the 2012 Annual Book Sale, putting in several days and hours in, during, and after the sale. She brings a lot of new energy to the Friends and we all look forward to her help!

Our Business Partners We have seen a nice growth in our Business Member enrollment. Their contribution often goes beyond their membership dues. The Newsletter will do short articles in the following months on each of our local business supporters, so be looking for that. Of course, we encourage our general membership to visit our business members and support them as you have a need.

The resources housed in the up-per floor are property of the Atlanta Public Library, but are maintained by both the Cass County Family His-tory Center (CCFHC) and the Cass County Genealogy Society (CCGS). They are available for research, but can NOT be checked out!

The Cass County Gene-alogical Society will meet Tuesday, June 12th, 6:30 p.m., at the Horne Enterprise Building, Pinecrest Drive at South Louise, Atlanta, Texas. We will not have a guest speaker, per se, this month, as it is time for our annual outdoor fest. Rumor has that a Ten-nessee Great-Grandmother “impersonator” may appear and tell how she braved snow-fall five feet deep while walking uphill both

ways to and from school in the Ten-nessee hills and give her story about how she got to Texas. This is yet to be con-firmed! Members and guests are invited to bring a “picnic style” dish, pref-

erably with food (i.e. not just the dish). According to one’s taste or desire, it may be packed in a picnic-style basket, but that is not an absolute requirement. One item that you MUST NOT bring

are ants, especially the fire-ant kind!

Net gain on Sale = $2,533.82

During the May Gen-eral Membership Meet-ing, several concerns and changes were dis-cussed. Subject to unknown factors that may exist in 2013, the location of sale items… within the Library…. (books, video, audio, etc) will change. A significant group contributing to the suc-

The 2012 Annual Book Sale is now his-tory. We were blessed with good weather and good crowds. The Sale’s success was in large part due to the tireless efforts of the volunteers listed on page one. Randy Brockett also helped as much as he could within the con-fines of his health.

cess of the sale was the donation and raffle by the Nimble Thimble Quilting Club and its matching grant from Thrivent Financial. Kenneth Watkin’s mother likewise donat-ed two specialty rugs used as 2nd and 3rd prizes. Volunteers are the key to successful book sales. Will you stand up and be counted in 2013?

Sale revenues were as follows: 1] Book Sales: $1,753.82 2] Sales tax collected: $ 144.68 3] Quilt Club Donation: $ 905.00 4] Thrivent Financial Grant $ 200.00 ——————————————————— Total Revenue $3,003.50 Expenses: 1] signs $ 325.00 2] Sales tax paid $ 144.68 ———————————————————

The CCGS Board has been challenged to come up with something unique for the pic-nic….. But not to worry, it will not be something super exciting like bungee-cord jumping.

Have a safe and happy Summer. Kathy
