Academic FacilitiesLycoming College boasts some of the finest academic build-ings in the nation, including a 180,000 volume library. Students have access to a wireless Internet network throughout the campus and enjoy the most modern technology available in the classroom.

Athletic FacilitiesA modern physical education and recreation center with a 2,300 seat gymnasium, six multi-purpose courts, 200-meter indoor running track, six-lane pool, sauna, steam room, train-ing room, weight room, several locker rooms and athletic of-fices is available to all students. An outdoor athletic complex with facilities for football, soccer, lacrosse and softball is home to Warrior athletics. The complex contains locker rooms, public rest rooms and a training office.

Living FacilitiesNine residence halls with male, female or mixed living accom-modations as well as on-campus apartments.

Extra Curricular OpportunitiesA national Greek fraternity and sorority membership, intramu-ral and club athletic programs, choir, band, concerts, theatre, student newspaper, campus radio station and yearbook are just some of the opportunities.

Lycoming College is a small liberal arts and sciences college dedicated to providing the type of learning that can be used for a lifetime in a sup-portive, residential environment that fosters individual growth and close interpersonal relationships.

Founded in 1812, Lycoming is one of the 50 oldest colleges in the nation. It is a private, co-educational, four-year college historically affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

Lycoming continues to receive acco-lades for its strong academic reputa-tion. The school has once again been recognized as one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report in the 2011 edition of “America’s Best Colleges.” The Princeton Review lists Lycom-ing as one of the “Best Northeastern Colleges” while Forbes.com ranks the institution among “America’s Best Colleges.”

The school, first known as Williamsport Academy, became Dickinson Seminary in 1848 when it began its affiliation with the Methodist Church. It became Williamsport Dickinson Seminary and Junior College in 1929, Pennsylvania’s first fully accredited junior college. In 1947, the school became known as Lycoming College, a four-year degree-granting private college.

All of Lycoming’s resources and fac-ulty are dedicated to the undergradu-ate education of more than 1,400 students. Classes are small and taught by highly credentialed faculty. The student to faculty ratio is 14-to-1 and more than 90 percent of the faculty holds either a doctorate or terminal degree in a specialized field.

The quality of campus life is enriched by a variety of extracurricular ac-tivities through which Lycoming students gain valuable leadership training. Students produce a weekly newspaper, edit a yearbook, mount theatre productions, participate in a nationally-acclaimed choir and concert band, as well as organize and manage their own social fraternities and sororities, special interest clubs and campus-wide social events.

Lycoming provides student-athletes the opportunity to combine sports and academic goals in a school that offers excellence in both.

In the best tradition of the liberal arts philosophy, Lycoming encourages the growth and development of the entire person. The College offers each student the opportunity to grow and excel in a number of ways, including participation in Lycoming’s nationally recognized intercollegiate sports program.

• 2011 Budd Whitehill Division III Wrestling Duals • 3 •

Now in its 23rd year, the Budd Whitehill National Duals was a unique concept in 1989 when eight of the top teams in the nation came together at Ithaca College for a dual meet tournament then named the Division III Wrestling Duals.

Created at the same time as the NWCA Cliff Keen Duals, the Division III National Duals filled a void in small college wrestling. The NWCA National Duals only invited the Divi-sion III champion to its tournament before the event expanded to include Division II, III and NAIA brackets in 2001.

In 1989, though, it was easy to see how vital and exciting a Division III national dual meet tournament could be. It was a quick success and the event jumped from eight teams to 16 teams in 1990, when Lycoming competed in the event for the first time, finishing fifth under former head coach Budd Whitehill.

The event continued to grow, reaching 20 teams by 1994, and it continued to be held at sites in New York, also headquartering in Binghamton and Cortland. In 1995, Ly-coming College hosted the event for the first time.

Finding a HomeBy 1995, the Division III National Duals were bringing in the top teams in the na-tion, hosting the eventual NCAA champion twice at the event, although, ironically, in each case, the NCAA title-winner (Ithaca in both 1989 and 1994) was edged out in the finals of the duals, with Delaware Val-ley winning the first title and Trenton State earning the win in 1994.

Under the guidance of head coach Roger Crebs, Lycoming College made a success-

THE BuDD WHITEHILL nATIOnAL DIvISIOn III WRESTLIng DuALSAT HOME In LAMADE gyMnASIuM SInCE 1995

ful bid to host the event at Lamade Gym-nasium in 1995. The two-day event, with four mats laid across the long gym floor, was an immediate fit on the Williamsport campus.

In 1996, a coaches’ vote after the the tour-nament kept the event in Williamsport and it has never left.

A Wrestling LegacyAfter all, what better place to have a na-tional event than a school that always seemed to be at the heart of the Division III wrestling conversation.

Fourth all-time amongst Division III schools in dual meet wins and the only NCAA school with two 300 dual-meet winning coaches in Whitehill (376) and Crebs (300) in its history, Lycoming Col-lege’s 55-year wrestling legacy is not just one of the finest in Division III, but in all of collegiate wrestling.

Honoring BuddAt the same coaches’ meeting after the 1996 tournament that determined to keep the Duals in Williamsport, it was also decided to change the name to the Budd Whitehill National Duals, in honor of the former Lycoming wrestling coach.

“The name change was to finalize some recognition for Budd Whitehill for the extended service he gave to Division III wrestling and wrestling in general,” Crebs said.

Whitehill, who died in the summer of 1993, started the Lycoming wrestling program in 1956. He was the program’s only head coach for its first 37 seasons.

He led Lycoming to a 376-173-5 record and 10 Middle Atlantic Conference champion-ships during his career. His 376 victories rank 11th all-time amongst NCAA Division III coaches.

In 1991, Whitehill was inducted into the NCAA Division III Wrestling Hall of Fame and he was also inducted into the Pennsyl-vania Interscholastic Athletic Association Hall of Fame, the District 4 Wrestling Hall of Fame and the West Branch Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Before his death, the Budd F. Whitehill Endowment Fund was set up at Lycoming and the Lamade Gym wrestling room was also named in his honor. Whitehill also has an athletic scholarship in his name at Lock Haven University, his alma mater.

23 years StrongIn 22 years, the Budd Whitehill National Duals has seen its fair share of memorable moments.

The College of New Jersey has had its share of them, winning a record eight titles, including six in the 1990s. The Uni-versity of Wisconsin-La Crosse also had a dominating run at the tournament, win-ning three crowns in a five-year span from 2000-04.

Lycoming has also had its share of success at the event, winning titles in 1997 and 1999 and placing at the event 17 times, second only to TCNJ, which has earned its way onto the platform 21 times.

Loras College and SUNY Cortland have each placed 13 times and won a title.
