No. 20 Friday 30th June 2017
Dear Parents,
Congratulations to all our girls and boys on a
wonderful term of learning and connecting. It
has been fabulous witnessing so many
children try their hardest, extend themselves
to reach the next level in their learning,
challenge their own and others’ thinking and
encourage their peers to do their very best.
Each and every week has also been alive
with extra curricular activities – choir,
gardening, band, chess, coding, robotics,
Lego, sewing and debating.
Our SRC has met every fortnight to plan and
organise activities and to make suggestions
to Mrs Nettleton ensuring that student voice
counts at St Bernadette’s. Thank you to the
many parents who assist in our classrooms
with reading and writing groups and to those
who help out behind the scenes in so many
ways. The research clearly indicates the
positive benefits for children when the school
and home work in partnership to support
children’s learning. I would like to wish all
our families a restful and relaxing school
holiday. Enjoy the change in routine and
each other’s company.
The staff look forward to welcoming the
children back on Monday 17th July 2017.

In the Eucharist Jesus is
present and active. We eat in
memory of Jesus’ Death and
Resurrection. Jesus feeds our
faith and we are shaped into
the body of Christ, and we
follow His way of living.
The Eucharist is the memorial of the life,
death and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus is
really present in the celebration of the
Eucharist.
The Eucharist is the central and greatest
sacrament of the Church. It is the means by
which the Church is continually maintained
in communion with Jesus Christ the Lord and
the means by which each Christian
participates in the once and for all sacrifice
of Christ on the Cross. The Catechism of the
Catholic Church following a document of
Vatican II calls the Eucharist the ‘source and
summit of the Christian life’.
We congratulate and continue to pray for all
those children from our parish who will
receive this special sacrament on the
weekend.

Maths Corner Investigations in maths and
problem-solving involves being
"stuck." If it doesn’t puzzle us, then
it is not a problem or an
investigation - it is simply an exercise. When children
get stuck it means they have taken on a worthwhile
challenge and gotten to a meaningful point in their
learning.
Maths is so much more exciting and meaningful for
children when it’s connected to real situations. When
we concluded our Design-a-thon at the Assembly this
week, the children heard how much they had raised
and they were given this data to use in a series of real-
life math’s investigations across the grades. Teachers
presented the children with the amounts collected by
each class [classes were simply identified as Primary
Class A to Class L and Infants Class M to Class V] and the
children tried to work through investigations such as:
whether Primary or Infants had raised more
creating tables of Place Value of the amounts raised
ordering the amounts raised from greatest to least and vice versa
finding the differences between the least amount and the greatest amount raised
working out the differences between class totals
working on the percentages, fractions and decimals
The children were genuinely enthusiastic to determine
solutions and show evidence of their mathematical
understanding and working. Here are two examples
showing the depth of their thinking:
Matthew B [1W]
I could order the amounts by looking at the thousands,
hundreds, tens and ones and I could arrange the money
from the smallest amount collected to the biggest amount
collected.
Xavier B [3G]
I worked out that the Primary classes added together
collected more money than the Infants classes, but then I
thought ‘hang on, there are 3 more classes in Primary
than Infants’ and that could be why.
Great thinking everyone and great work around a real-
life, rich, meaningful mathematical investigation!
Peer Support This week in Peer Support the children have continued
to work within their team to identify and develop their
strengths. By identifying our strengths students are
able to develop creative ways they are able to apply
these skills when faced with difficult situations. This will
help your child become more resilient and optimistic.
You may like to ask your child to share the strengths
they identified during this week’s session and discuss
how they can use their strengths throughout their daily
lives.
Optimism is when we think and act positively even when
faced with difficult situations. When we use our strengths,
try our best and are thankful to others, we are living
positively.

St Bernadette’s Athletics Carnival On Friday 23rd June, we had our Athletics Carnival at
Gooden Reserve, Winston Hills. We were blessed with a
gorgeous sunny day and the fields were in great condition
ready for our Infants and Primary events.
The day saw children involved in 800m, 200m, 100m heats
and finals, 60m sprints, Long Jump, Shot Put, Ball Games
and Relays. The children participated in all activities with a
great attitude towards competition, fun and fitness.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in our events
on the day.
We’d like to say an extra special thank you to all of the
volunteers who helped to make our day such a great
success. Our parents, students, Gilroy students and
teachers as well as our own dedicated teachers assisted
throughout the day on timekeeping, marshalling, place-
judging, field events and ball games. Thank you, without
you our carnival would not be possible.

In Term 3 St Bernadette’s will be
participating in the Share my Shoes
campaign alongside Cherrybrook Village. When we return to school in Term 3 you are invited to
help us support the ‘Share My
Shoes Campaign’ by donating your unwanted pairs of shoes. We
will have a collection box at school,
so during the holidays clean out
your cupboards and bring your
shoes along to school in Term 3 and we will make sure
that they go into the collection box to be donated to
the Smith Family. Every pair of donated shoes sold
through its retail stores will help the charity fund
education programs for children.
Woolworths Earn and Learn We will again be involved in the Woolworths Earn and
Learn campaign. Keep your eyes out for these tokens
when you are shopping in Term 3 and
send completed sheets into school so
that we can purchase play and
learning equipment for the children.
