FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI MASS
Thank you everyone who was able to join us for this most prayerful and significant mass on Thursday 15th June to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi. The Junior Unit and Mrs Adamko prepared a beautiful and very meaningful and reverent mass for our school. The children need to be congratulated on their beautiful read-ing, the way they responded during the mass and for their lovely singing of hymns. Additional activities were planned for the remainder of the day during which children worked in House Groups to explore the meaning of our special school song – “We are the Body of Christ.” A display of some of the work can be seen in the school office foyer. Well done everyone! BOOK FAIR
What a great success!! Mrs Judie Baird is to be congratulated on her excellent planning and organisation of all aspects of the Book Fair. The number of parent helpers was wonderful and their help was certainly needed and greatly appreciated. Thank you to all the children and families who supported the Book Fair by purchas-ing many beautiful and interesting books and items. We are very grateful to everyone who supported in some way to ensure the smooth running of the Book Fair. Thank you! Thank you to everyone in our school community who has contributed in any way to the smooth running of Corpus Christi School during this term.
Wishing everyone a happy, safe and restful holiday.
From all the Staff at Corpus Christi Primary School. With kind regards, Linda

FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI last Thursday 15th June
We shared in a beautiful liturgy with Fr Darein last Thursday, as we celebrated our special Feast Day. This was followed by special activities throughout the day. Please see our foyer display which was produced as part of our celebration. How we are Jesus’ hands, feet, eyes, ears, heart today?? Members of our R E Student Team, Gianni, Penelope and Isabella have
written a small reflection of the day.
The Feast of Corpus Christi
On Thursday the 15th of June the whole school community celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi is latin and it means ‘The Body of Christ”. First we acclaimed a beautiful Mass celebrated by Father Darien. Isabella and I were privileged to be Altar Servers. After the Mass we separated into four House Colour Groups- Penola (green),
Portland (blue), Woods (red), and Mackillop (yellow) - to study different verses of the School Song “Body of Christ”. We continued to investigate what it means to be the Body of Christ in our world today. After second lunch we played games and watched movies in our classrooms
as yet another form of celebration.
By Isabella D’Elia, Penelope Bensted, and Gianni De Pasquale
For safety reasons no child is allowed on the SENIOR PLAYGROUND after school without the DIRECT supervision of parents.
Toddlers and pre-schoolers may use the JUNIOR PLAYGROUND only with DIRECT supervision of parents at all times.

THIS WEEK IS WORLD REFUGEE WEEK
A Prayer For Refugees O Lord, open our eyes that we may see the needs of refugees; open our ears that we may hear people's cries for justice; open our hearts that we may assist displaced people near and far.
Show us where love, hope and faith are needed.
Use us as ministers of your healing.
Let us not be afraid to protect the weak because of the anger of the strong, or to defend the poor because of the power of the rich.
Sustain us so that in these coming days we may be able to do some work of peace for you.
Amen

SLEEP AND LEARNING
Winter is the time of the year when we all don’t feel as good as we could! Many cold and flu viruses are prevalent in families and at school. Our days of light are shorter and it is harder to get up in the mornings when it is still dark outside! Children come to school still their rubbing eyes and feel tired in the mornings. Some don’t sleep as well because of illness and colder temperatures. Good-quality sleep helps children to concentrate, remember things and behave well. This helps them be a successful learner. Poor sleep or not enough sleep affects concentration, memory and behaviour, making it harder for children to learn. Children who don’t sleep well are more likely to feel sleepy at school during the day and to have difficulties with learning. Concentration - Children who are sleepy have trouble concentrating dur ing the day. If children can ’t keep their attention on what they are trying to learn, whether it’s climbing a tree at the park or singing a song at school, will affect their learning. Memory - Remember ing things is par t of learning. For example, if a child is tired, it ’s harder for them to remember basic things like how to spell words, how to do maths calculations, or where to find information in a book or on the internet. It’s also harder for them to remember how to do things like playing a musical instrument. Our brains create and strengthen different types of memory in different sleep cycles. For exam-ple, just before a child wakes in the morning, their brain uses the last stages of REM sleep to sort and store memories and information from the previous day and get ready for the day ahead. Behaviour - Sleepy children tend to have more problems with behaviour at school – and at home too! For example, a sleepy child might not cooperate in class or have difficulty following the teacher’s instruc-tions. A sleepy child might miss out on learning because the teacher is busy managing their behaviour. They might also miss out on playing with other children if they don’t like the way the child is behaving. Managing Sleep problems Some sleep problems are behaviour issues that you can manage by promoting good sleep habits. These
include positive bedtime routines to encourage settling and sleep, a quiet and relaxing sleep environment, and good health, nutrition and activity during the day.
Sleep problems often start to get better after the first week of getting into good sleep habits. If you don’t see any improvement, there might be medical reasons for your child’s sleep problems. It’s worth talking with your doctor in this situation.
If your child has been sick, you’ve probably been up and down to them at night, soothing and settling. Once they are better, they might like to keep having all that extra night-time attention. If this sounds like your situation, you might need to be firm about getting back into your child’s normal bedtime routine.
But do talk with your child’s doctor if you think your child’s poor sleep is related to a medical problem – for example, asthma or epilepsy.
Some sleep problems such as jet lag and adapting to daylight saving time usually sort themselves out in about a week as your child’s sleep cycle adjusts to a new bedtime.
HOW MUCH SLEEP DO WE NEED? Sleep researchers believe there is no one magic number for ‘sleep need’ and there are a lot of individual dif-ferences in what children and adolescents need to sleep to be at their best. But below is a guide of the best evidence we have so far.
Babies under 1: 14-18 hours throughout the day and night Toddlers: 12-14 hours per 24 hour period Primary school: 10-12 hours per day High school: 8-10 hours per day Adults: 7-9 hours per day

SENIOR UNIT
The Senior community participated in Writing Workshops to plan, compose, revise and publish an explanation text on a system within the human body e.g. Circulatory System or How do hiccups hap-pen? During our Mathematics workshops, students have worked on expanding their skills, knowledge and understanding of multiplication strategies e.g. written strategies of vertical multiplications and the ‘Lattice’ method along with mental strategies of double, double when multiplying by four. Students have researched common drugs e.g. paracetamol, caffeine and presented: what drugs are, why people use them and some positive or negative effects.
Our learning over the last few weeks of term will be directed towards classifying drugs as stimulants, de-pressants and hallucinogens and knowing the effect of these. We will also discuss recreational and medic-inal reasons as why people use drugs. As part of learning in Religion, students will investigate different aspects of the Bible e.g. stories, authors, history, books and trivia about the Bible.
Use the following resources to support family discussions about drugs: https://www.lifeeducation.org.au/parents https://kidshealth.org/en/parents https://positivechoices.org.au/

FOUNDATION UNIT Fridays Werribee River Walk marked the last walking excursion of our inquiry unit about Community. We were very fortunate that all of our excursions had fantastic weather and were extremely successful. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time as these excursions would not have been possible without our amazing parent helpers. We will continue to have parents and families present to the children about their roles in the community with a Sporting Coach, Train Controller and Scientist a sample of what is coming up. Thank you again for making these events a great experience!!!
In Religion we will be learning about the life of Saint Mary MacKillop of the Cross. Who she was, where she lived and her role in her family.
Literacy will see us continue to include and master aspects of a writer, including capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. Through the books of Joy Cowley, we will be identifying adjectives and verbs to include in our writing.
In Numeracy we will begin our learning of Time (Measurement). Our focus will be on analogue clocks and will introduce the concepts of hour, minute and o'clock
Please see the ‘remind app’ for details on the activities we are undertaking in class.
Yours in partnership, The Foundation Team
JUNIOR UNIT
With only a week and a half to go, the juniors are thriving with their learning. Students have started planning their weather reports preparing to present in front of their communities next week.
In Religion, we will be looking at saints such as Saint Francis of Assisi and will be discussing Saint Francis' devo-tion to God and how this was expressed through his love for all of God's creation. Students will learn how saints care for the poor and sick and will identify that It is our mission to help people in need.
In Mathematics, we have been discussing the number of sides (edges) and corners (vertices) that different shapes have. We will continue to look at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes over the coming weeks. We are also continu-ing to learn about subtraction and how we can count backwards in order to find the difference between two num-bers. Listed below are some helpful websites that you can visit with your child.
http://www.learningpotential.edu.au/practise-together/A003_2
http://www.learningpotential.edu.au/practise-online/L111
In Literacy, whilst learning about Narratives, students have been learning about ‘colourful semantics’, colour-coded cue cards to ‘show’ how a sentence is made up. Each colour card represents a word or part of the sentence.
The Colour Cue Cards are– who, what doing, what, where, when, how doing, what like, who to, joining words, not. Please encourage your child to write stories using some of these cues.
Yours in Partnership, Mrs Michelle Surmiak, Junior Unit Leader

Last week our Junior Students enjoyed playing and experimenting with clay and are looking forward to making a blow and decorating it with patterns next week! I’m sure the chidren will have so much fun using our fingers and hands to create something special!
Mrs Chetcuti , Arts Specialist Teacher
MIDDLE UNIT
Middle students had a blast exploring Polly Woodside and the surrounding areas last Friday and we were blessed with some beautiful weather too. Students got to scrub the decks, have a go at steering the ship and explore what it was like to be onboard Polly Woodside during the late 1800’s.
In Religion, students are exploring and investigating a chosen Saint. During their investigation, students will give reasons why their person is a saint, explain why this person is spirit filled and then share their new found knowledge of their saint with the class. Students will then move to identify spirit filled people in their community and lives to-day.
The Middle Community have enjoyed another exciting and busy term, filled with new learning and experiences. Middle Community teachers look forward to the next two weeks of term and wish all our families a safe and restful upcoming holidays.
Regards, Ms Kim Gleeson, Middle Unit Leader
