WEBSITE SURVEY REMINDER Last week we emailed all families the link to the survey we are conducting on our website. We welcome your feedback if you have not as yet responded, please take the time to do so before the survey closes on Friday 16 th June. REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCES Thank you to everyone who takes the time in the morning to phone through your child’s absence on that day. We do appreciate the early notification. Nonetheless, our current policy requires that parents, at the minimum, provide us with a written note in advance of an extended absence, and when their child returns to school. We are reviewing this policy with the aim of streamlining the process and providing parents with more online avenues. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q. What happens if we our voluntary fundraising initiative fails to raise the anticipated amount of funds for our school? A. The short answer is that we will have less money to allocate to the projects identified as priority projects for this initiative. The longer answer is that we would have to review our approach to fundraising again later in the year and make changes this would be challenging in light of our community survey feedback earlier in the year. Currently we have received $3,000 leaving a shortfall of $11,000 from our budgeted target figure of $14,000. If you have not yet forwarded your $30.00 voluntary fundraising contribution, please consider doing so payment plans can be tailored to suit your needs. QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY LONG WEEKEND Friday 9th June 2017 is Report Writing day, Monday 12th June 2017 is a public holiday, and no students are required at school on either day. We hope families enjoy the long weekend and we will see all the students back at school on the 13th June. STUDENT REPORTS The Victorian Curriculum is what teachers use when planning their teaching and learning programs and assess against when writing student reports. The Victorian Curriculum F–10 includes both knowledge and skills. These are defined by learning areas and capabilities. Teachers plan learning opportunities in each of these areas, laying the foundations in Prep and progressing through different standards of achievement. This curriculum design assumes that knowledge and skills are transferrable across the curriculum and therefore are not duplicated. For example, where skills and knowledge such as asking questions, evaluating evidence and drawing conclusions are defined in Critical and Creative Thinking, these are not duplicated in other learning areas such as History or Health and Physical Education. It is expected that the skills and knowledge defined in the capabilities will be developed, practised, deployed and demonstrated by students in and through their learning across the curriculum. Further information can be obtained from the website: http://victoriancurriculum.vcaa.vic.edu.au/

The design of the Victorian Curriculum F–10 is set out below:

SOVEREIGN HILL GRADE 5 CAMP and CYC CITY GRADE 6 CAMP Our grade 5 students returned safely from camp on Friday and have reported that they enjoyed exploring and learning about Sovereign Hill at Ballarat. The students enjoyed gold panning, candle making and learning about the gold rush and how they lived during this time. One highlight of the time spent at Sovereign Hill was the night presentation of ‘Blood on the Southern Cross’. An exciting light and sound show that portrays an important part of our gold rush history. Our grade 6 students returned on Friday from an enjoyable Melbourne City camp. They explored the museum, visited the Shrine of Remembrance, Federation square, and Parliament and observed the night sky from the Melbourne Observation Wheel. Thank you to our parent volunteers who assisted on both camps and to our staff who planned excellent camps for our students.

NATIONAL BUDDY DAY On Thursday 15th June, our whole school will participate in the ‘National Buddy Day’. On the day, students will participate in a range of activities with their buddy grade. Students are encouraged to wear purple on this day and donate a gold coin to the Alannah & Madeline Foundation. At Berwick Lodge, we highly value our association with the Alannah & Madeline Foundation and recognise the great benefits of the Better Buddy Program. CHESS TOURNAMENT Congratulations to Ashwin M in 5K who competed in a local school Chess tournament this week. He came third overall, which was in the top 10% of players in his region. We wish Ashwin all the best with future Chess tournaments. NATIONAL CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA, SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY The NCCD is an annual assessment of the number of students with disability receiving educational adjustments to allow them to participate in schooling on the same basis as students without disability. The collection of data is completed by every school in Australia. No collection notice or consent form is required to be completed for the collection of data. The NCCD is not just about counting students, it is designed to provide schools and governments with a better understanding of students with disability, drawing on work of teachers and education staff and the information collected by schools. The National Data Collection will assist schools to: Gain a greater understanding of their students population and how students can be best supported Formally and consistently recognise the support and adjustments provided to students with disability Develop the professional judgement of school teams in making educational adjustments for students with

disability rather than relying on a medical or clinical diagnosis alone Review their learning and support systems and continually improve educational outcomes for students with

disability For any questions or for further information about the completion of the 2017 NCCD, please contact the NCCD

ATTITUDE TO SCHOOL SURVEY

Next week Berwick Lodge will be conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. We will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience. The Department has updated the survey for 2017 to include important new measures that are known to influence student engagement and performance. Students from Year 4 to Year 6 will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. Your child’s privacy and the confidentiality of your child’s survey responses will be protected at all times. No identifiable personal data is included in the survey response file.

If you would like further information with regards to the Attitude to School Survey please contact Mrs Sue Naismith via the school office.

World Environment Day Civic Reception: Last Friday evening 2nd June, I attended the City of Casey World Environment Civic Reception. It was an interesting evening with a presentation by Chris Russell from the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne. Chris outlined the 20 year plan for the gardens and how the area is being surrounded by housing development. The plan includes management of fauna and flora within the Australian Garden and a sustainability plan. The garden area was originally a large sand mine before being managed by the City of Casey. Families may not be aware but it is free to go to the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens and it is a great place to explore and learn. The garden is open from 9am to 5pm every day of the year except Christmas Day. For more information follow the link: https://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/visit-cranbourne It was wonderful to see photos of our school community garden on the powerpoint shared with members of the community. Helmeted Honey Eater Ambassador Program: Our first planned excursion to Yellingbo Nature reserve is next Wednesday 14th June. On this day the ambassadors will learn about the biology and habitat of the bird and also have the opportunity to work with Brian Quin an ornithologist (studies birds). We look forward to sharing our day with the school community once we return. Planet Ark National Tree Day – Friday 28th July Our school will again be participating in Planet Ark Day next term. On the day, we will require the assistance of volunteers so please look out for more information in future newsletters. Happy Gardening, Mrs. McCrum.

instruments wanted Do you have any unwanted instruments collecting dust at home?

I am looking for a variety of instruments to complement and extend the music program at Berwick Lodge Primary School.

Ideally I would love to source an electric drum kit, ukuleles, acoustic guitars, keyboards and percussion instruments.

I am also looking for bamboo chopsticks which will be used to teach drumming. If you think you can help, please contact Lorraine Montgomery in the Performing Arts Room.

Host Families and Exchange Students

A number of Exchange Students from Italy, France Germany, Japan, Austria, Norway, Sweden and Finland are hoping to come here this July and August because they wish to study here for a term, a semester or even two (which would mean they would be with the family who chooses them over Christmas and the summer holidays) with a family that would like to experience the differences and similarities of having an extra boy or girl aged 15-17 stay with them while they enjoy the experience and feel it is worthwhile. I’m hoping that’s you and your family, so if you’d like to give it a try for a length of time, can afford an extra member of your family at mealtimes and have a spare bed, share room or own, please call Klaus Schumann on 0472 771 785 or email; [email protected] (There is no payment involved as these are exchange students). Look forward to hearing from you or receiving an email.
