Waratah Thoroughbreds Farm has made the decision to disperse it’s 20-strong broodmare band in the new

year, with the mares set to be offered by Inglis during its April sales.

The Southern Highlands-based farm will instead focus its attentions on racing and trading in stock, though it will continue its breeding operations overseas to Southern Hemisphere time with an eye to selling the progeny in Australia.

Of the 20 broodmares set to be offered by Inglis, 11 will be entered for the Chairman’s Sale for Breeding Prospects on 12 April, while the remaining nine mares will be offered during the Inglis Australian Weanling and Broodmare Sale, which runs from 15 to 17 April.

Among the mares set to go under the hammer is the US Grade One-winning mare Miss World (Bernstein) who is currently in foal to Coolmore-based dual champion sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill).

She has produced three named foals to date, with her only foal to race so far, No Reluctance (More Than Ready), successful on the track as a two-year-old.

The unraced Jemsa (Street Cry), who is out of the Listed winner Elusive Sparkle (Elusive Quality) and a three-quarter sister to Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) winner and Group/Grade One-producing sire Street Sense (Street Cry), will also be offered during the dispersal in foal to Darley shuttler Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado).

Also in the dispersal is the stakes-placed Ephemera (More Than Ready), a half-sister to VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Running Tall (Stratum) from the family of 2008 champion US two-year-old Midshipman (Unbridled’s Song).

She will be offered in foal to Arrowfield Stud-based champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice).

Five-time winning mare Gamba (Elusive Quality), whose half-sister Cosmic Endeavour (Northern Meteor) won twice at Group One level, will be offered in foal to Newgate Farm-based Golden Slipper Stakes

(Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist (Written Tycoon).

Mares will also be offered in foal to Widden Stud stallion Sebring (More Than Ready), Vinery Stud shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo), Arrowfield’s champion sire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and Coolmore’s Choisir (Danehill Dancer),

Waratah Thoroughbreds principal Paul Fudge said the decision to disperse the elite broodmare band was not one he had taken lightly, but that he was looking forwarding to bidding on their offspring in the future.

“The decision to disperse these mares has not been easy but I look forward to seeing them produce racetrack stars for their new owners in the future,’’ Fudge said.

“I love racing and breeding and will continue to stay involved in the industry both here and around the world.”

Inglis national bloodstock director Jonathan D’Arcy said that he was looking forward to conducting the dispersal and that he anticipates the mares will prove popular with buyers in April.

“This group of mares have been mated to the very best sires in the world over the past few years,” D’Arcy said.

“Several of them have yearlings and two-year-olds about to hit the racetrack by stallions like Deep Impact, Fastnet Rock, I Am Invincible and Exceed and Excel and many are from some of the world’s most active female families.

“This unreserved dispersal sale offers breeders from around the world access to a high-class group of mares in the prime of their breeding lives with some amazing upside to come.”

Both the Inglis Chairman’s Sale for Breeding Prospects and the Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale will be held at Riverside Stables in Sydney following the conclusion of the Australian Easter Yearling Sale in April.

The inaugural Chairman’s Sale for Breeding Prospects earlier this year saw 93 lots catalogued, with 70 sold for a total aggregate of $23,085,000, an average of $329,786 and a median of $265,000.

The top lot was the 2016 Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Provocative (Zabeel) who was purchased by Paul Willetts Bloodstock Consultancy for $1,200,000 from the draft of Newgate Farm.

Portelli confident Testashadow can run wellTrainer Gary Portelli is confident that Testashadow (Testa Rossa) can outrun his odds in tomorrow’s Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick. Rated an $18 chance with CrownBet to land the $250,000 race, Testashadow will be looking to follow up his recent success in the Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) and will be ridden by Ben Melham, with his last-start rider Jason Collett heading to Queensland. "Ben's my go-to man whenever I need a jockey and he was happy to come up," Portelli said. "Testashadow looks fit and ready to go, he's tightened up and looks like he's at his peak.”

Mister Sea Wolf ready for Villiers testAfter finishing a close second to Testashadow in the Festival Stakes on his first start in Australia, Irish import Mister Sea Wolf (Amadeus Wolf) will clash again with the Gary Portelli-trained gelding in the Villiers Stakes at Randwick tomorrow. Trained in Ireland by Ger Lyons, the Chris Waller-trained Mister Sea Wolf will start from barrier 13 with jockey Kerrin McEvoy booked to take the ride. "He said he was a real trier and very genuine horse," said Waller’s racing manager Charlie Duckworth. "He's certainly got every chance on Saturday to take out a Group Two on only his second Australian start."

Heathcote hopes to land lucrative bonus After Hopfgarten (Mossman) drew barrier 14 in the Villiers Stakes at Randwick trainer Robert Heathcote considered not running the gelding, but the prospect of winning a $100,000 bonus helped sway Heathcote into keeping the seven-year-old in the hunt for the Group Two. The bonus is available to a horse that can win the Villiers Stakes and then go onto win the Bernborough Handicap (Listed, 1600m) a Doomben on 30 December. “I thought about not going after the draw but the incentives are still there so he’ll run,” Heathcote said. “There’s

a $100,000 bonus if he wins the Villiers and Bernborough Handicap and there’s a $50,000 bonus if he places in the Villiers and wins the Bernborough. It’s disappointing and our chances have nosedived after the barrier draw.”

Profit Street ready for Scahill testThe consistent Profit Street (Viscount) is ready to run a big race in the A J Scahill Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ascot tomorrow, according to his co-trainer Peter Giadresco. The six-year-old, who ran fourth in the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at his last start, will race from barrier nine in the $250,000 Group Three. “I believe I have the locals pretty much covered,” said Giadresco, who trains in partnership with his son Matthew. “He is right to go and deserves a big win. The only horse I don’t have much of a handle on is Ulmann. But my horse is ready to pull out a big effort.” Lindsay Park two-year-olds ready to debutCo-trainer Ben Hayes hopes that Ennis Hill (Fastnet Rock) and Via Regina (Snitzel) can give the stable the right signs that they can start planning for a potential Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) campaign when the pair make their racecourse debuts in the Evergreen Turf Plate (1100m) at Caulfield tomorrow. "Ennis Hill is a horse that doesn't have the greatest legs so she didn't go to the sales and we've had to be really careful with her," Hayes said. "But her work at home has been really good and she's shown us above average ability. Via Regina’s been at Flemington over the past couple of weeks and has improved and really tightened up. She's drawn barrier one which is a big plus and she should get a good run."

Williams eyes first city winTrainer Daniel Williams has admitted to feeling nervous as he prepares to saddle his first city runner Valiant Spirit (Duporth) in the Sheamus

@anz_news

Mills Bloodstock Handicap (1700m) at Caulfield tomorrow. The three-year-old gelding comes into the race having won his two most recent starts and Williams hopes he can continue that rich vein of form tomorrow. "It won't help my nerves how many times people tell me that I've saddled up good horses before," Williams said. "Last start we realised he might be pretty decent. To come back from 2000 metres and lead throughout over 1300 metres at Geelong was pretty outstanding. I've had him set for this race. It was going to be a shot at the stumps when we started out, but it's now the logical progression."

Sunlight will need another run before Magic MillionsTrainer Tony McEvoy believes that Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) hopeful Sunlight (Zoustar), who runs in the Calaway Gal Stakes (Listed, 1110m) at Doomben tomorrow, will need another start before she heads to the Gold Coast on 13 January. The two-year-old filly has not been seen since she ran third on debut in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m). "At this stage I think she will need another run on top of Saturday before the Magic Millions Classic," McEvoy said. "There is the McLachlan Stakes in two weeks and there is a race a week before the Millions. Le Chef and Houtzen both won that race before winning the Millions so there are plenty of options."

Schweida rates star three-year-olds as equalTrainer Kelly Schweida has said he has had no choice but to run talented three-year-old fillies Cellargirl (More Than Ready) and Shogun Sun (Written Tycoon) against each other in the Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben tomorrow. The fillies are both being prepared for a tilt in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast on 13 January. "You don't get much of a chance for a break these days with feature carnivals just about every month," Schweida said. "You just get over the spring and the Magic Millions is on you. It means there is a limited programme as lead-ups for the races."

Edmonds expects pair to improveTrainer Toby Edmonds has said he expects both Col ‘N’ Lil (Bradbury’s Luck) and Whypeeo (I Am Invincible) to improve second up at Doomben tomorrow, with Col ‘N’ Lil lining up in the Lough Neagh Stakes (Listed, 1350m) and Whypeeo taking his chance in the Gold Edition Plate (1200m). Col ‘N’ Lil ran seventh first up in the Keith Noud Handicap (Listed, 1200m), while Whypeeo comes into tomorrow’s race off the back of a first up third over 1100 metres at Canterbury. "Col ‘N’ Lil isn't a big mare and she had 59 kilograms in the Just Now. In Saturday's race she is down to 55 kilograms which isn't bad for a multiple stakes winner," Edmonds said.

From Within to start at CanterburyTrainer Edward O’Rourke has decided to start new stable acquisition From Within (Not A Single Doubt) at Canterbury today rather than at Randwick tomorrow. The former Chris Waller-trained filly will take on older mares in the Book Summer Holiday Today Sprint (1100m) on Friday night with Kerrin McEvoy set to ride. Raffles Thoroughbred Racing transferred the filly from Waller to O'Rourke's stable in May, shortly after he took out his training licence. "I was just lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time," O’Rourke said.

High hopes for Doves Cry Trainer Henry Dwyer hopes Doves Cry (Street Cry) can follow up her debut victory at Ballarat when she takes her chance in a Benchmark 64 (1200m) at Moonee Valley tonight. Dwyer has made no secret that he believes the three-year-old has progressed and hopes she can compete at stakes level in the autumn. "I really like her as a filly," Dwyer told Racing.com. "She's one that I earmarked from a fair way out as one of my better three-year-olds, she's right up there. That suggests she goes pretty well and I think she'll show that over her next few starts. If she can win or run well there we'll just keep going through toward the fillies races in the autumn for her.”

Belwazi looking for four in a rowTalented mare Belwazi (Bel Esprit) will aim to make it four consecutive wins when she takes

her chance a Benchmark 70 (955m) at Moonee Valley tonight. The Jerome Hunter-trained four-year-old mare has only tasted defeat once in her five-start career and Hunter is confident she can continue this winning thread after being impressed the mare’s most recent piece of work. "Her work this week was explosive," Hunter told Racing.com. "She's trained on really well [since her last win], she's held her weight and she's much fitter now, I couldn't be happier with her. Eventually we will step her up in grade, but I will just keep going as far as I can with her in suitable races.”

Eagle Farm to remain closedEagle Farm will not be ready for the Brisbane winter carnival and will be closed until at least next spring. Racing Queensland and the Brisbane Racing Club confirmed yesterday the troubled track needed more time to be able to race at a high standard. Eagle Farm has been closed since 27 May when it was ruled to be unfit for major racing. The decision for the track to remain closed for an extra period means there will be a re-jigged winter carnival next year. The track was scheduled to be open for the winter carnival but there have been delays in the remedial work.

QRIC chases $100,000 in unpaid finesAbout 170 Queensland racing participants have failed to pay more than $100,000 in fines and penalties this year. Some of the individual debts are as high as $8,000. The Queensland Racing Integrity Commissioner (QRIC) has in an unusual step suspended recovery efforts until the new year but issued a final warning. QRIC Commissioner Ross Barnett said it was important outstanding debtors paid up before the Christmas-new year holiday was over. "We have a list of more than 170 racing industry participants across Queensland who owe more than $100,000 in fees and fines," Barnett said.

Sunday times moved, Echuca postponedDue to forecast hot weather, Sunday’s eight-race Bendigo card will now commence at 11:45am and the seven-race Horsham meeting on the same day will kick off at 11:58am. Racing Victoria (RV) also confirmed yesterday

that Monday's meeting scheduled for Echuca will now be held on Wednesday. RV acted on advice from the Bureau of Meteorology, which had predicted 34 degrees in Bendigo and 36 degrees in Horsham on Sunday, while temperatures of 41 degrees have been tipped for Echuca on Monday. Nominations for the transferred Echuca meeting have been re-opened until 11am on Friday, with weights to be released that afternoon. Acceptances will close at 9.30am on Monday.

Baker and Forsman eye stakes doubleMurray Baker and Andrew Forsman are strong-handed to repeat their Cal Isuzu Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) and Waikato Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) double on Saturday, which they achieved with Coldplay (Savabeel) and Lizzie L’Amour (Zabeel) respectively at Te Rapa twelve months ago. The co-trainers are represented by last-start Counties Cup (Gr 3, 2100m) winner Maygrove (Authorized) and Zacada (Zabeel) in the Waikato Cup, while they have three chances in the Cal Isuzu Stakes, including last year’s winner Lizzie L’Amour, the 2015 winner Stolen Dance (Alamosa) and Love Affair (Savabeel). Should they run well at the weekend, Baker plans to run Lizzie L’Amour and Stolen Dance in the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.

Ritchie confident Devise can run wellShaune Ritchie saddles two of the ten-strong field for the Cal Isuzu Stakes at Te Rapa on Saturday and rates Devise (Darci Brahma), who will be ridden by Michael Coleman, as his best chance in the Group Three. “She looks a good chance to get some more black type on the pedigree page,” said Ritchie. “As long as she races up to expectations and comes through well, the Zabeel Classic is on the cards.” Meanwhile, Chris Johnson will take the ride on her stablemate Let Her Rip (Rip Van Winkle), who won the Rotorua Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) in May, but has been out of the frame in three outings since. “Chris Johnson is a good booking for Let Her Rip, we’ll be riding her cold as she’s best when she’s held up for the last crack at them,” Ritchie added.

Sensei handed Telegraph missionTrainers Michael and Matthew Pitman are keen to hold out for a place in the Telegraph Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) on 20 January at Trentham for Sensei (Dream Ahead). The three-year-old has been nominated for the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) on 13 January, however the NZ$250,000 Group One sprint is believed to be the favoured target. The colt has won three of his ten starts and on his last outing he returned fifth, after being forced wide off the bend, in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Chance To Dance ready for Tauranga Irish-bred multiple stakes winner Chance To Dance (Teofilo) will continue his preparation for an intended tilt in the Zabeel Classic at Ellerslie on Boxing Day with a racecourse gallop at Tauranga on Friday. "He looks terrific and we were going to trial him at Te Aroha, but the track was a bit firm so he'll have a gallop at Tauranga with Scrutinize,” said co-trainer Jamie Richards. The eight-year-old has won two of his three starts in New Zealand, having been successful on his debut in the Karaka Classic (Listed, 1600m) at Pukekohe, and was last seen at

Ellerslie beating Mime (Mastercraftsman) in the OMF Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) last month and has been kept fresh since.

Karaka Million aim for EmbellishMeanwhile, Chance To Dance’s New Zealand 2,000 Guineas-winning stablemate Embellish (Savabeel) and runner-up Age Of Fire (Fastnet Rock) have returned to their Matamata quarters ahead of their Boxing Day targets. "They're in good shape and both colts will run in the 1400 metre race at Ellerslie on Boxing Day with Embellish going to the Karaka Million 3YO Classic and Age Of Fire to the Levin Classic," Richards concluded.

Tivaci to stay at homeWaikato Stud have decided not to shuttle Group One winner Tivaci (High Chaparral), to the National Stud in England for 2018. The All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner covered over 140 mares in New Zealand in his first book, including Group One winners Daffodil (No Excuse Needed), Costume (Savabeel) and I Do (No Excuse Needed). “After such a successful season that has just gone so quickly, we

have decided not to take up the offer of a Northern Hemisphere season at the English National Stud,” Waikato Stud principal Mark Chittick said. “This decision was not taken lightly. As you know, this option was not in our original planning, but developed after the initial approach from the English National Stud. However, he would have been one of four first season sires within their operation so we felt his opportunities may become limited and we were not prepared to risk Tivaci on this venture.”

Fasig-Tipton scrap Turf ShowcaseFasig-Tipton has decided not to conduct a second edition of the Turf Showcase, the sale that was held for the first time in September focusing on yearlings more likely to compete on turf based on breeding or conformation. At the sale, 74 yearlings sold for an aggregate of US$5,035,000, an average of US$68,041 and a median of US$52,500, though 71 of the 145 horses through the ring went unsold. "We do not plan on conducting the Turf Showcase in 2018," Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning told Bloodhorse.com. "We saw the market response wasn't as strong as we hoped. I am little disappointed that it didn't do better.”

The courageous on-pace performance of the Aidan O’Brien-trained Highland Reel (Galileo) in taking out Sunday’s Hong Kong

Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) at Sha Tin provided the highlight on the watch from last weekend’s racing.

Ridden forward as is Highland Reel’s usual style, Ryan Moore settled the well-travelled entire in second place before applying pressure to the leader Helene Charisma (Air Chief Marshal) 1600 metres from home.

Taking a clear lead at the 800 metres, Highland Reel was then a target for his highly credentialed rivals as the field turned into Sha Tin’s 430 metre home straight.

Fighting back tenaciously under Moore’s urgings, Highland Reel then demonstrated his stamina and quality by drawing clear again over the closing stages to score by a length and three-quarters from Breeders’ Cup Turf (Gr 1, 12f) winner Talismanic (Medaglia d’Oro) with the Japanese-trained Tosen Basil (Harbinger) just under a length further back in third.

Time for the race was a fast 2:26.23 (12.18 200m rate), the second fastest Hong Kong Vase this century, which was a fraction outside the 2:26.22 recorded by Satono Crown (Marju) in last year’s race when he defeated Highland Reel by a just under a half-length after another strong on-pace effort.

Highland Reel is indeed a highly talented and rare stayer that can set and maintain a strong tempo throughout a full 2400 metre journey.

Sunday was the five-year-old stallion’s final race start and he will now join his sire Galileo (Sadlers Wells) on the Coolmore roster with the admirable career record of ten wins (seven at Group / Grade One) with nine placings from 27 starts and prize money earnings of $13,951,220.

There may be some elite thoroughbreds that carry a higher rating than Highland Reel’s lofty 128 Timeform figure but it is doubtful if any

have travelled the globe so successfully that has seen him race in seven different countries: Ireland, Great Britain, France, Hong Kong, Dubai, Australia and USA.

Other noteworthy performances on the watch at Sha Tin featured the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m).

The John Size-trained Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel) returned a fast 1:08.40 in winning the Hong Kong Sprint, also producing fast closing sectional times in the process.

After racing close to the pace, Mr Stunning fought back gamely to win by a neck from his unlucky stablemate D B Pin (Darci Brahma) who ran on well despite a wide trip.

Mr Stunning was timed to run his final 800 metres in a fast 44.71 with his final 400 metres in 22.82 while D B Pin returned the fastest closing times of the race with his final 800 metres in 44.43 and his last 400 metres in 22.78.

And while strong tempos were a feature of the Hong Kong Vase and Sprint that certainly was not the case in the Hong Kong Cup (Gr

1, 2000m) where the lack of a genuine mid-race pace proved costly for the runner-up and favourite Werther (Tavistock).

The eventual winner was the Tony Cruz-trained Time Warp (Archipenko) who was taken straight to the front by Zac Purton and they combined to set a mediocre tempo that resulted in the first 1200 metres being clocked in 1:15.76 (12.62 200m rate).

With the race turning into a sprint home from the 800 metres point (that section clocking 45.87 with the final 400 metres in 22.08) which paved the way to a clear two and a quarter lengths victory for Time Warp.

The three-time Group One winning Werther then made good ground, after being back in seventh place, to take a good second in the sprint home without threatening the winner.

Werther was timed to run his final 800 metres in 45.44, the fastest for that section in the race, with his last 400 metres in a quick 22.09.

Feature racing in Australia saw the running of the last Group One race of the year in Perth,

the Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) where victory went to the former New South Wales-trained gelding Pounamu (Authorized).

And while Pounamu, who now holds a 115 Timeform rating, is at the other end of the spectrum in comparison to Highland Reel whose 128 peak is some 13 pounds superior, the Alan Matthews-trained grey still staged a solid performance in winning.

Ridden well back in the field, Pounamu appreciated a solid pace that saw the first 1200 metres run in 1:13.82 before coming with a strong late bid to score by a half-length in an all-West Australian finish with the first four past the post being locally trained.

A first-up winner of the Asian Beau Stakes

(Gr 3, 1400m) when resuming at Ascot on 4 November, Pounamu was having his second run since that victory with the Kingston Town Classic becoming his first Group One victory in 37 starts.

Time for the 1800 metre journey was a solid 1:49.50 (12.16 200m rate), equivalent to 2000 metres in 2:01.66 and Pounamu clocked 34.76 for his last 600 metres, in coming from 11th at that point, which was the fastest for that section in the race.

Pounamu failed to win in 13 starts in New South Wales, finally breaking through for his new stable in Perth in January 2016, so it is probably doubtful if he would be competitive in his former home state but he certainly can continue to be effective in the top grades in West Australia.

However, the progressive Darren McAuliffe-trained three-year-old War Room (War Chant) may well possess the potential to be up to eastern states class.

War Room is now unbeaten in three starts following recent wins at Northam and Bunbury and he stepped up quickly in grade in taking out the Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Stakes (Listed, 1400m) in promising fashion on Saturday.

He was smartly away and then steadied the pace (first 800m 50.19) was briefly headed on straightening but War Room came again, fighting back very gamely in the sprint home (34.55 last 600m) to win narrowly but quite impressively from the Godolphin-raced colt Gaulois (Street Cry).

Won:Guardian Partners Maiden Handicap, 1200m, Wyong, 13 December

The Joe Pride-trained Cyber Intervention (So You Think) scored a narrow but good win on his debut over 1200 metres at Wyong on Wednesday under jockey Jay Ford.

The gelding, who had finished fourth in the pair of Warwick Farm barrier trials earlier this preparation, settled in fifth place

and was under riding when the tempo picked up at the home turn. He got a nice turn through into third spot on straightening up before

he finishing strongly to lead in the last strides for a head victory over Zabeel’s Choice (Snitzel), seemingly with something in hand.

Cyber Intervention is one of four named foals and of the three to race he is the only winner out of the once-raced Al Maher (Danehill) mare Soft Landing, who is herself a half-sister to multiple Group One winner Universal Prince (Scenic) and 2007 Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Universal Queen (Scenic).

Soft Landing is also a half-sister to the placed Scenic (Sadler’s Wells) mare Razzia, the dam of Group Two winner Lucy Mae (Stratum), while this is also the same family as dual Group One winner Blevic (Scenic) and Listed winner Averau (Stratum).

Cyber Intervention’s sire So You Think (High Chaparral) has sired four stakes winners to date and has 21 yearlings catalogued as next month’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

New in 2017, Stratum’s best son...

Analysis: The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained filly Grande Vitesse put up a nice effort in winning here on debut. She began quickly from her inside barrier (1) and went straight to the front. She then travelled well at a reasonable tempo, was challenged nearing the home turn and came again over the closing stages, drawing clear again to score quite comfortably at the post.
