This Month What’s on

The Bramley Apple

is a great British

fruit that should be

celebrated; do

something special

with Bramley Ap-

ples this month!

Citrus Fruit will be

entering a difficult

time.

Clementine and Satsuma often begin to turn

scruffy in February. If they do, we will switch to a

Minneola; they taste great but tend to be more

difficult to peel.

Seville Oranges have finished. Italian Blood Or-

anges are still available but will be drawing to an

end.

Fresh English Forced Rhubarb actually classified a

vegetable, is now in season, please be aware the

season for the beautiful and delicate forced Rhu-

barb is short and ends by Easter.

Cyprus Grapefruit is at its best at this time of year.

South African Nectarine and Peach are still availa-

ble in the market, but not recommended they

tend to arrive very under ripe.

Berries are average quality for the time of the

year.

Strawberries are delivered daily from Spain, Blue-

berries are flown in from Peru and Blackberries

from Mexico.

Fruit

Bramley Apple Pie

The weather this winter has not had an adverse

effect on the price of European salad or glass-

house produce, like Peppers, Lettuce, Cucumbers

and Tomatoes they have been slightly more ex-

pensive for the time of year. Iceberg is currently

good value, but the current cold spell will push

some prices up over the next 2 weeks.

Dutch Chicory is excellent value at the moment

and can be roasted or braised. Why not try some-

thing different like Red Chicory giving excellent

colour to the plate.

French Dandelions Leaves are available - an ex-

cellent addition to any dish. All the fancy lettuces

like Lollo Rosso, Oakleaf and Frizzee are sourced

from France this month.

Vegetables English Purple Sprouting Broccoli is in the mar-

kets and is looking good. French Swiss Chard

and English Rainbow Chard are still available.

French Cauliflower is medium to large size but

unpredictable in price, English Cauliflower has

been in short supply. French Romanesco Cauli-

flower is available until the end of the month.

Kenyan Sugar Snaps, Fine Beans and Mange

Tout are available, but there have been a few

quality issues in the Fine Beans due to poor

weather conditions. The first crops of Egyptian

Peas and Bobby Beans will be harvested this

month, supplies can be a little erratic at first, so

please bear this in mind when planning your

menu.

English Red Cabbage is excellent value, a per-

fect warming vegetable for a cold winter

menu. Another under-rated vegetable, the

root Salsify it is at its peak during February, and

is rich in fibre with a delicate flavour that will

remind you of Asparagus.

February is a good time to start preparing for

the coming year, shaking out any cobwebs,

reviewing pricing, planning menus and most

importantly saving money. If you keep menus

seasonal and local, savings will be made. If you

are costing menus, and need advice or help

with average prices or availability call the of-

fice.

Peaking at this time of year are both Jerusalem

Artichokes and Egyptian Globe Artichokes.

English Brussel Sprouts are still available but will

be drawing to an end. Local Cabbages are at

their best at this time of year with many varie-

ties to choose from: Local English Curly Kale is a

fantastic alternative to Spinach.

Local January King Cabbage –fantastic purple

tinge to the outer leaves. Local Savoy Cab-

bage– with dark green crinkly, curled leaves.

Portuguese Hispi (Sweet Pointed) Cabbage has

made an appearance in the markets. Spanish

Broccoli is at its best.
