CONTENTS

20 YEARS IN LATVIA!The French Institute in Latvia, the Republic of France’s official language and culture centre has been providing French language teaching for children, youth, adults, students, civil servants and specialists from various fields, in groups or individually, for 20 years already.

OUR ACTIVITIESWe offer general courses and a wide range of activities for in-depth language learning throughout the year in non-intensive, medium intensity or intensive sessions. Based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the courses are offered throughout the year using three learning paces: non-intensive, semi-intensive and intensive. Activities take place in the French language to help course participants get used to a French environment.

OUR TEACHERSWe have local teachers and teachers from France at the French Institute, who have specialized in teaching the French language as a foreign language. They regularly upgrade their knowledge and skills with trainings set up by the French institute and its Latvian network.

EXAMINATION CENTREThe French Institute is the only examination centre in Latvia where you can attain internationally recognized diplomas which confirm knowledge of the French language (DELF-DALF, DFP).

This French language course with a professional focus is meant for people who require the French language for work or are preparing for work in a profession. The course programme includes preparation to attain the internationally recognized DFP and DELF Pro diplomas.

The course has been developed using role play in which participants learn about the everyday work of businesses in practice, understanding the main areas of work activities in a logical fashion. Practical exercises for expanding one’s vocabulary, developing an understanding of written text, and for practicing writing and conversation will be included in the activities.

WINE CULTUREWe discover out about the world of French wine and the vocabulary associated with the wine culture in the French language in activities - wine tastings! The activities are led by sommelier Jānis Volkinšteins. Interactive tasks, making tasting notes, blind tastings…

CHAMPAGNE – BURGUNDY WINE TOUR 26–29.10.2017

The French Institute in collaboration with VIETA is organizing a personal trip and a deeper insight into Champagne and Burgundy, two cultures and regions, rich in historical events, for its students or for any interested persons. This time it will be through the prism of wine culture. PHONETICS AND PRONUNCIATION The aim of the course – to find out about the main problems associated with learning the phonetics of the French language, to repeat the pronunciation of vowels and consonants, to understand why the French language “is not written as it’s spoken”, to connect writing with the sounds, as well as practicing French language intonation and word association with phonemes.

FUN AT THE MUSEUM!

We offer to improve your knowledge of the French language with art and through art, by examining paintings, focusing attention on places, personalities, items and themes portrayed in works of art, and through carrying out interactive tasks which are adapted to your level of French language knowledge. The goal of the activity is to strengthen and perfect the basic knowledge of the French language acquired during the regular course through works of art, with each activity being dedicated to a specific theme (e.g.. emotions, journeys, seasons, food...) The acquisition of language, like art, is a creative process! Maximum number of persons per group: 10.

EVERYONE ON STAGE! These exercises in the art of acting allow you to overcome the speaking barrier after you have learned a foreign language. We learn the basics of the art of acting, work with texts and practice the French language by acting in the French language in the theatre. The goal of the activity is to help children to express themselves orally more freely in the French language, to practice pronunciation and to complete tasks individually, in small groups or together.

AUTUMN HOLIDAY CLUBHolidays at school, but there’s preparation for a Halloween Ball at the French Institute!We offer creative thematic activities with a Halloween theme.During the activities, we will acquire vocabulary which is associated with this festival, make room decorations, invitations, costumes, and celebrate our Hal-loween ball. All of this will be in the French language, for different ages and for groups with differing levels of knowledge. The activities are divided into several blocks with short breaks planned between the activities.

FUN AT THE MUSEUM! (9–11 YEARS)In the holidays we head to the latvian national museum of art with the children! Under the guidance of teachers from the French Institute, the children will discover the National Museum of Fine Arts. During the activities the children will find out in French about paintings and what is portrayed in them: schools of art, colours, subjects, geographic forms, the family, professions etc. At the conclusion of the activities, there will be the opportunity for children to create their own works on the particular topic shown in the activity.

These tailor-made courses for children, teenagers and adults, cover general French language, in-depth language learning, French business and professional language. Your teacher adapt courses to topics you want to address and can respond in a targeted manner to your needs, allowing you to learn quickly and efficiently. FRENCH ACTIVITIES À LA CARTE

The French Institute develops individual training programmes which are tailored to the sphere of activities of a business and the needs of employees at various levels: general French language, French business language and French language activities for achieving a specific goal. Prior to commencing training, we undertake detailed training goals analysis and determine the level of knowledge of the French language for training participants. Activities can be organized in groups or individually, and can take place at the French Institute or on site at the business.Using communicative methods that include role playing, simulations and work with audio and video, we make sure you reach the best and enjoyable way to your training goals.

The activities that we provide will allow your employees to:• participate in discussions where the French language is the working language (meetings, telephone calls, concluding deals etc.);• learn and use the required vocabulary (jurisprudence, diplomacy, customer service, banks, the cultural sector, tourism, beautician, health, education etc.) in your area of activity;• improve your level of knowledge of the French language, developing all of the skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) and DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are the diplomas recognized by the French Ministry of Education, which allow for the evaluation of knowledge of the French language at the A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.The following skills are evaluated for each level: writing, reading, listening and speaking.DELF Pro evaluates knowledge in French business language (levels available: A1, A2, B1 and B2).DELF Junior is a version of the exam which is meant for students in later classes in particular. The attained diploma has the same value as an equivalent level exam diploma meant for adults (levels available: A1, A2, B1 and B2). Commencing in autumn 2015, the B1 and B2 level exam can replace the centralized high school exam in the French language. DELF Prim is meant for 8-12 year old children who are learning the French language as a foreign language. The exams have been developed on the basis of those designed for adults, but with the exam topics adapted to the specific age group. The diploma bestowed is equivalent to the corresponding level exam diploma for adults (levels available: A1.1, A1, A2).

DFP (Diplôme de français profesionnel) is an internationally officially recognized diploma bestowed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris (CCI Paris Ile-de-France), which is suited to the requirements of the professional environment and which permits the evaluation of knowledge of the French language at A2, B1, B2 and C1 levels in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.French business and professional language exams evaluate the ability to apply knowledge of the French language in a practical way in writing and orally in situations that are encountered in a real professional environment.

DFP Diplomatie & relations internationales B1 confirms knowledge of the French language in the diplomatic and international relations field.

WEDNESDAYS STORY AFTERNOONS

We invite cinema lovers to free cinema sessions every second Wednesday. You’ll find both cinema classics, as well as the latest French films in the programme.

Once a month on a Wednesday, the mediatheque invites young children to its story afternoon. Children who are mediatheque subscribers aged from 4 to 8 years are invited to the monthly get-togethers. The story afternoon lasts 45 minutes and includes reading of a captivating story and creative activities in the French language.
