John has been a dedicated member of the iKONIC team for Four years previously working with both our installation and service teams, as a supervisor with the view of becoming the Service Manager.

Mr Cullen previously worked in the events industry from 2005 manufacturing and erecting seating grandstands and developed into project management due to his structured approach to problem solving and natural organisation abilities being recognised.

“A great deal of thought has been implicated into developing the regular use of key components such as control systems, drives and door systems which has enabled us to implement product training programs companywide enabling

the team to become familiar with the equipment. The impressive engineers at iKONIC install and commission their own lifts prior to final test which is generally a formality. Along with the variety of work we undertake and can honestly say there is rarely a dull day excluding talking to Mark.

Part of my remit within the Service department is to fully implement our new remote lift monitoring platform across our portfolio which will enable us to predict faults before they happen, make minor adjustments from the comfort of my office.

When there is a failure requiring manual intervention, we can determine the fault and inform our engineers in advance reducing any equipment downtime.

I am particularly proud to represent my club and I play Golf for the county of Worcestershire and looking forwards to being involved in organising the company’s annual charity golf day which is to be held at The Woburn Golf Club where we have a corporate membership.”

Conducting business in the Middle East solely relies on your ability to form good business relationships and have a clear understanding of the client’s needs. Having formed contracts with clients such as Meydan Racecourse, Emirates Football Club, Time-out, and a plethora of large Hotels across the Middle East.

Returning in 2013 and joined her family business based in the Jewellery quarter Birmingham actively generating and closing new business opportunities with new and existing client bases and managed and developed a strong sales pipeline. Clients such as Peninsula

Hotels, Manchester United Football Club and Cunard.

Louise also spent some time out “living the dream” in Woolacombe Devon, where she carried out a large-scale home renovation. This still did not light the spark for a career move and in 2016 moved back to the hustle and bustle of the Midlands, her hometown.

Prior to finding her feet as a BDM Louise worked in the construction industry for the International Operations Director. Louise was extremely lucky to have travelled and worked in some of the most beautiful countries in the world. Clients such as Walsgrave, Swinfen Hall and large housing developments.

Now back on home soil, Louise has thrown her efforts into learning the new industry and is keen to make a success for iKONIC with her business and customer relation focus.

Designers know what looks good but what other aspects are important when designing the interior of the lift. If you look at the behaviour of lift passengers, people tend to observe the side, floor, control panel, mirror or ceiling panels rather than make eye contact with other passengers. The cosmetic look of the lift can often complement the style and architecture of a building and create a harmonious ambiance and desired user experience. A good lift designer puts emphasis on achieving functional and safety aspects in the aesthetic elements to improve the user experience.

Side PanelsBeing the most visual element, in heavy usage lifts brushed metallic, plastic laminates with curved corners are easier to keep clean. Plastic laminates are available in fibre, stone, wood or painted looks allowing for

greater flexibility in the design. More luxurious panels can include exotic woods, Bronze, Brass metallic finishes or leathers in variety of colours and tones. Finishes also act as functional safety features such as fire-resistant properties or anti-vandal along with assisting people with disabilities. Including handrails aid the elderly and protect side panels from damage.

MirrorsMirrors make the confined space larger and allow passengers to monitor the behaviour of the neighbours from a safety aspect and generally allow the passenger to feel more comfortable.

FloorsNon-slip materials from a safety aspect such as rubber or matching the lift car floor to the landing floor are very popular requests. It is important the material is robust and high quality

to resist cleaning chemicals

Ceilings and LightingCeiling height should be considered for safety and aesthetic reasons. Research has highlighted a person’s mood can be effective by the light. Opting for a change in light settings at different times of the day to make the transition between the building and elevator appear more seamless.

Control Panels and ButtonsCosmetically can look however you wish however they are clear standards that must be followed. Invest in anti-baterial options.

Landing Entrance & Car DoorsDoors generally have an arduous lift being consistently subjected to impact damage resulting in wrongly selected materials becoming shabby after a short period of time. Therefore, the Aesthetics of both landing and lift car

doors can be enhanced with a wide range of bespoke finishes by either treating the existing door carcass or replacing the door skin with a range of exotic materials. Careful refinishing of the entrance doors can transform the appearance of the lift. However careful consideration to running clearances when recovering the existing door fabric, generally the addition of a replacement skin / cover is limited to a maximum material thickness of 1-2mm. When selecting the finish as you would with the lift car interior it is imperative to ascertain the type of duty the lift is going to be submitted to prior to making any decisions as delicate soft metals, leathers or laminates are not suited to a goods environment where a more finish robust scratch resistant finish is better suited to the application.

PROVEN HISTORIC BUILDING LIFT SOLUTIONS

THINGS TO CONSIDER DESIGNING THE INTERIORS & ENTRANCES OF A PASSENGER LIFT

iKONIC ChallengeiKONIC had to ensure this lift looked stunning but also worked effortlessly, oval underdriven glazed doors, aged bronze finishes, space limitations. The structure was cleverly designed to be used as a conduit for all necessary electrical and mechanical services minimising the visual impact.

Installing a circular lift into a delicate elliptical stone staircase was a significant challenge as the structure of the lift could not transfer any load to the delicate feature staircase in this £125m property and was certainly going to be challenging.

Due to the bespoke nature of the lift several design workshops were held with the client’s representatives and architects enabling visual concepts to be developed and samples produced.

Upon approval of the shaft samples 3D solid working models were developed enabling the structural integrity of the shaft to be closely analysed. It quickly became apparent there was a tendency for the structure to lean into the staircase which was not acceptable.

To overcome the bending movement, we designed a structural spine for the shaft by using more rigid structural steel for the shaft panels located at the rear of the structure cancelling the flexing of the structure to within tolerable limits.

INSTALLATION OF BESPOKE PASSENGER LIFT TO MULTI MILLION POUND HOME

Our Client The centre of London is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the world. Residential homes comprising of 12 bedrooms, 2 basements, 2 lifts, a cinema, a gym, separate leisure areas, a Spa complete with a 20m Swimming Pool that seamlessly transforms itself into an entertainment space,

plus a separate mews property, this super-prime project totalled 22,500 sq. ft.

iKONIC LIFTS Ltd was one of several sub-contractors working on this major residential project, nestled anonymously amongst foreign embassies in the heart of Belgravia which required flexibility, teamwork, and an exact approach to quality control.

iKONIC Solution

iKONICS Project Manager quickly completed a staged delivery plan ensuring enough equipment on site for our engineers to work without overloading the site with materials, eliminating any health and safety or damage issues that may occur, combating our confined working area.

Our team quickly established that there would be significant issues installing the hydraulic ram and control equipment and it was therefore decided to lower the ram into its bore hole prior to the completion of the basement levels alleviating future issues.

Once the Ram and power pack

were installed and commissioned, the structures vertical columns and landing floor rings were installed with the lift car floor, we were able to develop a working platform enabling the structure to be installed section by section.

As the staircase had not been completed landing levels were theoretically in place but due to tolerance build up in the construction of the bespoke staircase finalised. Onsite measurements needed to be taken enabling the structures landing plates to align with the actual floor levels.

A proactive flexible approach and working in close cohesion with other trades enabled the spectacular deployment of the Modern Moroccan Lantern lift

iKONIC

Results

The bronze meshed “Modern Moroccan Lantern” lift, designed, manufactured and installed by ikonic Lifts, which rides up the centre of four floors, was fully installed on time. The circular lift car with a glass ceiling which gives a view to the London sky as it moves up to the top, shows no mechanical workings or electrical wiring.

The finished result was simply stunning and completes the ambience of the space and complements its environment creating an immersive experience as a passenger and furthermore a fabulous luxurious taking point for the multi-million-pound grade listed building.

Installation went to plan with no delays and once fully tested was handed over as a safe working passenger lift.

INDUSTRY NEWS & DIRECTORS THOUGHTS

Many lifts, escalators and moving walks, homelifts and stairlifts are essential to users and occupants of buildings even during the COVID-19 epidemic. iKONIC have put together some guidance on their use below.

Guidance from Public Health England (PHE) includes measures for social or physical distancing, handwashing etc. This note includes some basic precautions for users and owners of lifts, escalators and moving walks, homelifts and stairlifts.

User Precautions Owner ConsiderationsLift car buttons (car and landing) and lift car handrails

Avoid direct contact where possible e.g. using something like a pen top to press the button or wearing gloves.

Clean the push buttons, handrails and other surfaces of lift car and lift doors regularly.

Lift lobbies Follow physical distancing guidance – 2 metres apart

In busy buildings, these measures might increase the waiting time for lifts. Consider measures to reduce the demand for lifts e.g. use stairs where possible, staggered start times.

Lift cars Do not enter a lift if this results in being within 2 metres of another passenger

Lift cars quiet or empty buildings

Avoid using lift cars if there are few people in the building

Regularly check that the lift alarm communication system is operating correctly. If there is no alarm communication device, put alternative measures in place to check if someone is trapped in the lift car. If not, we recommend you take the lift out of service.

Escalators and moving walks handrails

Use gloves when using the handrails or wash your hands thoroughly afterwards

Consider fitting UV-C disinfection unit to inside of escalators and moving walks. Where these are fitted, fit signs advising users.Note: external units might introduce risks to users from UV-C light and trapping hazards for fingers/ hands.

Escalators and moving walks

Follow physical distancing guidance – 2 metres apart

Homelifts, lifting platforms in domestic premises

Avoid direct contact where possible by using something like a pen top to press the button or wearing gloves.Where this is not possible, wash your hands thoroughly afterwards

Clean the push buttons, handrails and other surfaces regularly.
