Auctioneer Fred Spurgeon: A Lively sale today with a good number on offer.
Regular vendor Harold Ward was delighted to sell his first heifer over £2,000. It was
bred by David Shuttleworth and sold at £2,100 to Tom Green Wigan. Jeremy Taylor
was next at £1950 with David Graveston not far behind at £1940 & £1900. 12 out of
37 on offer today were over £1800 and even the pressure on silage stocks doesn’t
seem to hold back the trade. On a happy note, a 9th lactation cow from Andrew
Wensley sold to Simon Barker to suckle a calf and will spend the rest of its life in the
Yorkshire Dales!
NEXT WEEK is Dugdale Show with 40+
milkers entered and a good entry of Pedigree
in-calf heifers.
Thanks to all who came to Listen to Ian Potter
last Thursday. Ian gave a great question and
answer session and as usual made a few dairy
farmers think about what they are doing.

Auctioneer: Rachel Capstick. What a trade for blue bulls today, exceeding vendors’
expectations. More than half achieved over £400 as follows: £515 x2, £468, £465,
£448, £440 x2, £435, £430x 2, £424, £420, £415, £405 & £400. 31 Blue heifers
ranged between £165-£372 to average just shy of £300 for everything. The better
sorts of black & white bulls were nicely over £100 time and time again including
£178, £170 x2 & £138 all from the same farm. The natives ie Angus and Hereford
were a very nice trade again – plenty of bulls above £300 and heifers above £200. A
polite reminder to farmers: when registering your native calves with BCMS please
include the eartag number of the sire and write the full pedigree name of the bull on
each passport when you receive them through the post in order to be able to sell
them as ‘named sire’.
78 various stirks turned up and the general contentious of opinion was that they were
a very nice trade indeed for the goods on offer. A few suckler bred goods, dairy
cross continentals and black and white steers. The nicest run came from Sheffield
all away nicely above £600. Not as many black & whites about today, but generally
selling mid £300s.
In a fortnight it is our May Anniversary Show and Sale of Stirks. We hope for an
entry of 200 including some smart suckler bred types already booked in with us.
Please ring 01200 441351 with entries prior to Tuesday 8th for the ballot and
advertising.

Auctioneer Rachel Capstick:
A very good cast ewe trade this morning – plenty of Continentals £120-£150. Best Mules over £100, Jacobs to £80, Swales to £78 and Herdwicks to £74. So, hoggs were not the dizzy trade of a fortnight ago, but anything with weight and finish £100-£130 and in fairness for the goods on offer at this stage in the season all vendors were satisfied. More than half the total entry were lightweights and stores shown through the fat which dragged the average back when doing any comparison!
We started the ewes and lambs just shortly after 11.30am. Topping the market were outfits which had travelled the furthest – all the way from Co.
Durham - Texel ewes with twins at £260. Harry Wood, Dutton sold a Mule 2-shear ewe with a Beltex-embryo lamb at £248. Plenty of nicer outfits above £200 from the Umpleby family, Chris Craven and John Mitchell too. There was something for everyone and somebody for everything. The next standard down were generally £160-£180 for correct twin outfits and with singles £130-£150 depending on the size of lamb.
Remember to book your entries in for next Saturday to 01200 441351 by Tuesday lunchtime for the catalogue and advertising. We expect a larger number of ewe and lamb outfits next week on a full Saturday. Thanks
