Dear Friends, Pope Francis has certainly captured everyone’s attention. There’s even a great Italian cartoon, reprinted in this edition of the Spire (which you should receive this week), entitled “Superpope!” He’s been trying to reach out to people using as many contemporary means as are suitable for this outreach. This is very much in keeping with his recent publication, The Joy of the Gospel. I came across this quote that speaks to why he is so open to different means of spreading the “Good News.” Here’s what he said: I dream of a “missionary option,” that is a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world rather than for her self-preservation. When we hear the word “evangelization,” it may easily disturb us. We may envision someone standing on a street corner shouting “Repent!” Or, we may think of the televangelists who are so popular. In any event, we don’t like what the word implies. Yet, for the pope, the word simply means “if we have received the love which restores meaning to our lives, how can we fail to share that love?Or, as Jesus himself said, “The gift you have received, you must give as a gift” and “Go out to all the world and proclaim the Good News.” Of course, this means that you and I must first let ourselves be renewed by “the love that restores meaning to our lives. After all, how can we share what we haven’t recently personally experienced? I think of the men and women who have been on a retreat, like Cornerstone or one of the opportunities offered at San Alfonso down the shore. Or those who have been touched by AA or a small group discussions. These folks come away from those experiences changed people. The old words they heard when they were younger have taken on new meaning and they want to talk about it with someone. In the pope’s words, they want others to know “the joy of the gospel.” It’s this joy that seems to be missing from a lot of organized religion today. Do you know that in a 2012 PEW survey of religion, 20% of American adults currently identify themselves as “nones,” i.e. as having no religious affiliation? While many of those in this percentage were atheists or agnostics, about 33 million of those surveyed described themselves as having no affiliation. I have seen this trend here at St. Anne. We have baptisms most Sundays of the year. An average of four couples have their children christened at those celebrations. Of the four, one couple has been married in the Church, one has been married civilly, and two are not married at all. Our own recent Parish Survey confirmed a small number of younger families currently involved in our community. Clearly, this is a trend that we can’t ignore. Not only does it not for bode well for the future of parishes, more importantly now, these are people who have little connection with “the joy of the gospel.” My own nieces and nephews are part of this group. All our families are affected. Many of them see no need for a connection with a community like St. Anne. They feel that they can worship Christ on their own, privately. That might very well be true, buthow come the life of Christ that’s shared in communities like ours isn’t appealing to many? Didn’t Jesus say in today’s gospel “where I am you also will be?” He’s here! How come it’s not obvious? The pope is challenging us to reconsider how we “do our faith.” For the sake of those in our families and in the larger community who are untouched by the joy we have, we can’t ignore this challenge. Love, Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

Pope Francis has certainly captured everyone’s attention. I came across this quote that speaks to why he is so open to different means of spreading the “Good News.” Here’s what he said:

I dream of a “missionary option,” that is a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world rather than for her self-preservation.

When we hear the word “evangelization,” it may easily disturb us. We may envision someone standing on a street corner shouting “Repent!” Or, we may think of the televangelists who are so popular. In any event, we don’t like what the word implies. Yet, for the pope, the word simply means “if we have received the love which restores meaning to our lives, how can we fail to share that love?” Or, as Jesus himself said, “The gift you have received, you must give as a gift” and “Go out to all the world and proclaim the Good News.” Of course, this means that you and I must first let ourselves be renewed by “the love that restores meaning to our lives.” After all, how can we share what we haven’t recently personally experienced?

I think of the men and women who have been on a retreat, like Cornerstone or one of the opportunities offered at San Alfonso down the shore. The old words they heard when they were younger have taken on new meaning and they want to talk about it with someone. In the pope’s words, they want others to know “the joy of the gospel.”

It’s this joy that seems to be missing from a lot of organized religion today. Everyone is given unique gifts. Many people are

are many people who are unsure of their gifts. This

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

ministries can reflect the parish’s mission to reflect Christ’s presence in all that we do and say. Finance Committee

We are grateful to the 1,925 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $12,923.00 in the offertory and $1,951.50 through Online Giving offertory, which along

with other fees and donations, totaled $19,038.50. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the

back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that

week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special

envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much.

And special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving… You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday offertory online!

To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

At the top left corner of the page you will see a logo that says OnLine Giving...Click on that logo, and it will bring you to the next screen that says St. Anne R.C. Church. Click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. You will need to fill in the three boxes you see.

+ User ID: Make up an ID you will use for this account. The ID must have 6-12 characters, including at least 1

letter and 1 number.(Write it down somewhere so you remember it.) + Password: Must be between 8 and 16 characters, including at least 1 letter, 1 number and one special

character (!@&*) (Again, write it down somewhere.)

Confirm Password: retype the password you just entered above. Then go ahead and fill in your personal information and address information in the other two boxes. (Be sure your name matches how your name appears on your checking or credit card account.) When finished, hit submit.(You may also be asked for your envelope number at some point during this whole process!) If you go into Manage My Account, you will see My Payment Methods. There you can choose either My

Credit Cards or My Bank Account if you want the funds deducted from your checking account. Have a check handy to get the routing and account numbers. Under Manage My Account you will see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give.

In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection. Select gift type on the right. Choose recurring (every week) or One Time. If you choose Recurring it will ask how much/how often/starting when and will ask about the account you’re using. One time means just that. Below the offertory, you may choose all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet. Generally, they are one-time donations. If you click the i button on the left of the listing, you will see the date of the collection. Sign out when you’re finished. Now you can relax! The hard part is done. Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this, and for giving online!
