Dear Friends, I came across the following quote the other day that I thought I would share with you. It’s from Richard Rohr, the Franciscan priest who runs The Center for Action and Contemplation: The commandments, you know, are not requirements to get God to love you. That is forever and already taken care of. Moral mandates are requirements for your own self expansion and transformation….(they) allow you to encounter and reverence the other precisely as other (and not me!), and frankly so you can recognize your own stingy spirit. How can you possibly be prepared to know the Ultimate Other, that some of us call God, if you cannot stretch yourself to meet the little every day needs of “others” that are often an irritant, a demand, a stretch?...If you are a merciful, forgiving person, then I know you’ve met the real God. If you are narrow, stingy, and fearful, then you are worshiping something that is not God, probably some form of yourself. That’s quite a mouthful, I know. But, it is telling us something we all need to hear, especially those of us who come to Mass each week: it’s telling us that if we want to worship God, we have to do it on his terms, not ours. It’s not what we do for God. It’s what he does for us. Certainly, one of the commandments is that we “keep holy the Sabbath.” So, when we go to Mass, it seems like this is what we’re doing for God. But, if Rohr is right, Mass is God’s chance to expand and transform us. The first step he takes is, in effect, to call us to a special place (a church) where he can speak to us without the distractions of ordinary life. You know what it is like? It’s like two people in love who have a romantic dinner. They do this so they can focus on how much they care for each other. Unless that’s done often, the love they have will be taken for granted. Mass is God’s way to get us out of our everyday self- centeredness and to stretch us so that by sharing in his love he can open us to others. That way we worship him as he really is, not as we want him to be. He does it by gathering us with folks we don’t see that often, don’t necessarily like, aren’t of our ethnicity, race, or class. He does it so that we won’t think we’re the center of things. He is. If you look at the gospels, one of the most frequent things Jesus did was to have meals with a lot of folks. In those days the meal was the primary way to build relationships with those who were important to each other. It’s significant then that Jesus shared meals with those who ordinarily wouldn’t be found in each other’s company saints and sinners, tax collectors and zealots, Pharisees and those of ill-repute, the sick and the healthy. Jesus did this as a sign that this was what God was doing through him: he was gathering people of all circumstances to reveal to them that he was ending our rule of “divide and conquer.” He was replacing it with his rule of mercy and reconciliation so we could work together with him to build a better world. The Mass is a meal with Jesus. In it, he shares with all of us the life he has with his Father and their Spirit by speaking with us and by taking, thanking, breaking, and giving us to eat the food and drink that is his own self. Over the next few weeks, Fr. Colin and I will be offering reflections on how this meal continues Jesus’ mission. We’ll look at how he helps us meet the “real God” and how that God strives, in the Mass and outside of it, to break down the barriers that divide people so that, over and over again, he can unite us for his bigger purpose. Love, Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

I came across the following quote the other day that I thought I would share with you. It’s from Richard Rohr, the Franciscan priest who runs The Center for Action and Contemplation:

The commandments, you know, are not requirements to get God to love you.

Mass is God’s way to get us out of our everyday self-centeredness and to stretch us so that by sharing in his love he can open us to others. It’s significant then that Jesus shared meals with those who ordinarily wouldn’t be found in each other’s company – saints and sinners, tax collectors and zealots, Pharisees and those of ill-repute, the sick and the healthy. MEDITATION THE CONVERT

By G. K. Chesterton

After one moment when I bowed my head And the whole world turned over and came upright, And I came out where the old road shone white. I walked the ways and heard what all men said, Forests of tongues, like autumn leaves unshed, Being not unlovable but strange and light; Old riddles and new creeds, not in despite But softly, as men smile about the dead

The sages have a hundred maps to give That trace their crawling cosmos like a tree, They rattle reason out through many a sieve That stores the sand and lets the gold go free: And all these things are less than dust to me Because my name is Lazarus and I live.

Pope’s Monthly Intention: That the Lord may grant peace to those parts of the world most battered by war and violence.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Render therefore to Caesar the things that are

Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.”

- MATTHEW 22:21

Everything we are and everything we have

belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of

anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts

God has given each of us. All God is asking is

that we give back a portion of what He gave us.

This is the essence of Stewardship. God should

be our first priority in everything. All else

comes second.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Catholic Chaplaincy at Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus needs volunteers to transport in-house residents to and from hospital Masses: Wednesdays at 11:00 am, Saturdays at 3:30 pm and Sundays at 11:15 am. Also needed are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion on Sunday mornings or afternoons. If you are 18 years of age or older and wish to volunteer, please contact Fr. John Quill at 201-421-0009 for more information.

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Did You Know…..

The Second Vatican Council looked back at how the early Church initiated those who wanted to

learn how to live as part of the Catholic community and restored the “catechumenate” process that

we use today (which is also known as R.C.I.A.) . If you (or someone you know) are not a Catholic and you are curious about the Catholic faith,

or are Catholic but have not completed your sacraments,

We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment.

Our parish will soon begin a set of sessions to share with others the beauty of the Catholic faith and the fellowship of our

church family. These sessions are also opportunities for you to ask any questions you may have about the Church.

We meet on the 1st and 3

rd week of the month. You can attend either the Sunday morning sessions (at 10:30 am) or the

Monday evening sessions (at 7:00 pm). Next meeting is October 19th & 20

th .All sessions are held at the Rectory.

Feel free to join us. Give us a call if you have questions or would like further information at 201-791-1616.

Finance/Administration… A Christian community strives to steward its resources so that they can provide the material by which its various

ministries can reflect the parish’s mission to reflect Christ’s presence in all that we do and say. Finance Committee

We are grateful to the 1,580 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $11,902.00 in the offertory, $2,021.50 through Online Giving offertory

which along with other fees and donations, totaled $18,878.50. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than

others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra

energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you

should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly

appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The

energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot

them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already

been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
