Open Letter to theSecretary-General ofthe United Nations

CO2 emissions are unlikely toinfluence future climate. Policiesneed to focus on preparation for,and adaptation to, all dangerousclimatic events, however caused

H.E. Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General, United NationsFirst Avenue and East 44th Street, New York, New York,U.S.A.November 29, 2012

Mr. Secretary-General:

On November 9 this year you told the General Assembly: “Extreme weather due toclimate change is the new normal … Our challenge remains, clear and urgent: toreduce greenhouse gas emissions, to strengthen adaptation to … even larger climateshocks … and to reach a legally binding climate agreement by 2015 … This should beone of the main lessons of Hurricane Sandy.”

On November 13 you said at Yale: “The science is clear; we should waste no more timeon that debate.”

The following day, in Al Gore’s “Dirty Weather” Webcast, you spoke of “more severestorms, harsher droughts, greater floods”, concluding: “Two weeks ago, HurricaneSandy struck the eastern seaboard of the United States. A nation saw the reality ofclimate change. The recovery will cost tens of billions of dollars. The cost of inactionwill be even higher. We must reduce our dependence on carbon emissions.”

We the undersigned, qualified in climate-related matters, wish to statethat current scientific knowledge does not substantiate your assertions.

The U.K. Met Office recently released data showing that there has been no statisticallysignificant global warming for almost 16 years. During this period, according to theU.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), carbon dioxide (CO2)

concentrations rose by nearly 9% to now constitute 0.039% of the atmosphere. Globalwarming that has not occurred cannot have caused the extreme weather of the pastfew years. Whether, when and how atmospheric warming will resume is unknown. Thescience is unclear. Some scientists point out that near-term natural cooling, linked tovariations in solar output, is also a distinct possibility.

The “even larger climate shocks” you have mentioned would be worse if the worldcooled than if it warmed. Climate changes naturally all the time, sometimesdramatically. The hypothesis that our emissions of CO2 have caused, or will cause,

dangerous warming is not supported by the evidence.

The incidence and severity of extreme weather has not increased. There is littleevidence that dangerous weather-related events will occur more often in the future. The U.N.’s own Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says in its Special Reporton Extreme Weather (2012) that there is “an absence of an attributable climate changesignal” in trends in extreme weather losses to date. trying to stop extreme weather should therefore be diverted to strengthening ourinfrastructure so as to be able to withstand these inevitable, natural events, and tohelping communities rebuild after natural catastrophes such as tropical storm Sandy.

There is no sound reason for the costly, restrictive public policy decisions proposed atthe U.N. climate conference in Qatar. Rigorous analysis of unbiased observational datadoes not support the projections of future global warming predicted by computermodels now proven to exaggerate warming and its effects.

The NOAA “State of the Climate in 2008” report asserted that 15 years or morewithout any statistically-significant warming would indicate a discrepancy betweenobservation and prediction. Sixteen years without warming have therefore now proventhat the models are wrong by their creators’ own criterion.

Based upon these considerations, we ask that you desist from exploiting the misery ofthe families of those who lost their lives or properties in tropical storm Sandy bymaking unsupportable claims that human influences caused that storm. They did not.We also ask that you acknowledge that policy actions by the U.N., or by the signatorynations to the UNFCCC, that aim to reduce CO2 emissions are unlikely to exercise any

significant influence on future climate. Climate policies therefore need to focus onpreparation for, and adaptation to, all dangerous climatic events however caused.

Looney Mooney Ban Ki-Moon and others who spout this kind of insane chickenlittle drivel deserve to be publicly derided. The whole "scare" thing is purely about grabbingtax payer funds. Unelected political quangos funding NGO's and scientists to scream"chicken little" from the roof tops! It would be laughable if it weren't for the colossal wasteof funds on "pie-in-the-sky" speculation and initiatives that do absolutely NOTHING toaddress any real environmental issues or to assist those in real need of help.

This is sad for several reasons. 1) Ban Ki-Moon has not said currentextreme events are caused by CC, but that they represent possible future extremeevents in a changed climate should we not limit our emissions; 2) The clainm"Sixteen years without warming have therefore now proven that the models arewrong by their creators’ own criterion" is factually wrong, and, 3) The NP continuesto rant against climate change through hyper-linked opinion pieces in the FP, butgenerally does not report on climate change science or events itself. ie - the NPrefuses to educate, while the FP tells people how to react.

Finally!! Some real science rather than the post-modern charade of pretendscience. The clanking GCM's that spew estimates to political order, based on estimates, tweaked to produce more estimates have use-by dates that expired long ago. Listen to thefunders, authors and coterie of UN / World Bank apparachiks running out of places tomove the goal posts to. Listen carefully. The meme has shifted from CO2 and gobalwarming to anthropogenic influenced climate change. The meme will shift again as theGCM's fall over. It will be apparent for all to see and will simply be: "We are the Ministry ofWe Know Best." The pretense will finally be gone.

There is absolutely no evidence to support CAGW. The 0.5C of warming in the20th century can easily be explained by the strongest 73-year string of solar cycles thattook place between 1933 and 1996. When these strong solar cycles ended, so did thewarming (no warming trend since 1997....hmmmm).

Moreover, there will be a rare Grand Solar Minimum event starting from solar cycle #25,which begins in 2020. The last time this happened was the Maunder Minimum (1645-1715)and global temperatures PLUMMETED!

2013 will be a double dip La Niña year, which will drop global temps by about 0.2C,making 18 YEARS of slightly FALLING global temperatures by 2014.

It's time to pull the plug on this invalidated CAGW theory as empirical evidence does notvalidate its hypothesis. We've already wasted $TRILLIONS on this theory that is no longervalid.

Call it invalidated, a mistake, a fraud or a scam, it doesn't really matter... It's simply time tocall it off.

Despite this powerful challenge to AGW orthodoxy by 125 of the worlds climatescientists and several other that have appeared from time to time, including the abjectdenunciation of James Hansen, director of NASA's prestigious Goddard Space Institute, by50 of the top people that work or worked under his direction, the junk science of humaninduced climate change continues unabated. We can only pray for the day that somebrave world leader with gravitas will step forward and boldly proclaim that thisjournalistically created new god of science indeed has no clothes. Cytotoxic,

We may or may not be doomed, but there is no doubt that the steadily rising CO2levels in our planet's atmosphere are causing the rapid temperature increases, disappearing glaciers, acidifying oceans and so on that are occurring across theplanet. These changes are taking place as and when predicted. The timing, thedirection and the magnitude of current climate changes are well accounted for bycurrent climate models, laboratory measurements and observations in the field. Onedoes not have to be a climate scientist to recognize what is happening. In one sensethough the skeptics will have a field day in the coming years. After all, as moreevidence of climate change unfolds with incessant regularity, the skeptics will havemore and more to try, albeit with no success, to deny.

I know of no national meteorological body, no national academy of science and nocountry that does not accept the reality of anthropogenic climate change. Thereasons for this very broad acceptance of mainstream climate science are clear. Many countries are now rapidly implementing policies to curtail CO2 emissions. Thisprocess is irreversible. I'll give just one example. Singapore is about to impose feesof up to $30,000 on the purchase of new cars with high levels of CO2 emissions andrebates of the same amount on low emission cars.

http://www.greencarcongress.co...

"Under CEV, all new cars, taxis, and imported used cars registered from 1 January2013 with low carbon emissions of less than or equal to 160g CO2/km will qualify forrebates of between S$5,000 and S$20,000 (US$4,097 to US$16,389), which will beoffset against the Additional Registration Fee (ARF) payable."

"Cars with carbon emissions equal to or more than 211g CO2/km will incur acorresponding registration surcharge of between $5,000 and $20,000. Thesurcharges will only take effect six months later, from 1 July 2013, to give consumersand the motor industry more time to adjust."

"To encourage taxi companies to adopt lower emission models for their fleet, theCEV rebate and registration surcharge for taxis is set at 50% higher compared tocars, i.e. between $7,500 and $30,000 (US$6,146 to US$24,584)."

Denying the reality of climate change does no one any good. AGW denial probablycaused Mitt Romney, in conjunction with the timely (?) arrival of Hurricane Sandy, tolose the recent US Presidential election.

While I accept the reality of climate change science I am not campaigning for a shutdown of Canada's oil industry. I am in favor of a pipeline to deliver Canadian oil to allparts of Canada. Buying oil from abroad does not solve any problems.

For anyone interested, there will be a new and important study released tomorrowwhich provides further unequivocal evidence of man made climate change. It might

Lingonbay,

You're simply repeating the propaganda you've had beat into you....

Science isn't validated by consensus, it's validated by evidence that supports ahypothesis. Since empirical data doesn't agree with CAGW projections, it'sinvalidated. It's really that simple.

Ocean pH has only dropped from 8.1 to 8.0. 400 million years ago, CO2 levelswere 3,500ppm and oceans were STILL Alkaline and thrived.

CO2 is fantastic plant food but a lousy weak greenhouse gas. It only has thepotential forcing effect of 3.4 watts/M^2, for a DOUBLING of CO2 to 560ppm,which is minuscule. Moreover, its GH forcing effect is logarithmic so anyadditional CO2 over 560ppm has a decreasing effect.

It's time to stop wasting money on this hoax as its been invalidated. Globaltemps are cooling and will continue to do so with the coming Grand SolarMinimum in 2020.

Ligonbay,

Is that all you can come up with? If you are in favor of all these taxes you goon about then you'll need to provide some evidence to justify it. Appeal toauthority does not cut it in science. There are obvious self-interest reasons whygravy-train seeking scientists, quangos, NGO's and unelected governmentalbodies support CAGW. It is about time all these self-interested folks actuallycame up with some statistically significant scientific evidence for all theiralarmist BS!!

You could start by explaining why global temperatures have flat-lined for 16years while CO2 continues to rise? Please explain how this possible if man-made CO2 dominates our climate in a threatening catastrophic fashion?

Jeremy • 12 hours ago> Lingonbay

Another verbose sycophant of the 'killer plant food' meme. Pleaseshow me any empirical evidence that global average temperatures are in anyuni-directional, co-phase and measurable way connected to CO2 ppm?

Thought not.

Tips, for your consideration:

1. Before replying: refresh your understanding of "empirical".

2. A dog-whistle appeal to authority, especially anything to do withUN/IPCC/skepticalscience would merely draw attention to your IPCC-issuedwhistle.

If thats true why did a representative of the Hadley Centre say they werelooking into reasons warming had slowed after 2000? It was during a pressconference to annouce their estimate for how 2012 would rate on the all timesurface temperature record parade. You're going to need more than #9 to keepthe crisis storyline going much longer.

The cracks in this scheme have been growing wider and wider for years.Hopefully rational people will prevail and not allow the religious extremists to control things.Of course, once this doomsday scenario fades away, they'll just come up with another one, like they always do. The UN is an experiment gone completely off target, wasting resources like no otherorganization on earth. Add a long list of very offensive inaccurate statements offered up byUN officials in order to increase funding. Throw the fraud artists in jail.

We need to have the scientists measure the amount of CO2 breathed out by thebillions of people, animals, trees and plants. As against the measure from Industry. TheEco thing is a money machine.

No kidding GlobaloneyWarming and Co2 as a toxin is b.s. It is about world gov't,more transfers, more redistribution and more control by gov'ts of the miserable, toothless, hunched over hoi-polloi. 'Dirty Weather' ? Does that include the severest and earliestwinter in northern China in 50 years in Oct and Nov 2012 or the massive incidence ofhurricanes and drought during the 30s and 40s ? Not much of a trend to spot is there. Banis just another moron fronting for the eco-fascists and the cult of control. Maybe he canborrow Bono's glasses and become 'Bano' and sing some silly songs to the earth mother.

Tom Harris is quite confident that he, as a Canadian, is in a win-win situation. IfAGW IS NOT happening then he is right. If AGW IS happening then the motley crewsupporting the fossil fuel industry are helping warm up his Ottawa winters. I'm sure a lot ofCanadians are silently on his side.

[ November 29 2012] Suffice to say thatmost areas from the Mississippi Valley to the central and southern Rockies and the DesertSouthwest are hurting for moisture, and the pattern we're in right now doesn't lookpromising to change that in any meaningful way. powman-- CAGW is a global phenomenon, not a local one. There is plentyof anecdotal evidence/famous one-off weather events used by CAGW acolytes, which give the impression CAGW is valid, but upon review of actual evidence thatmatters: actual Global temp anomalies, actual ocean sea rise (now at a laughable7"/century, ocean temperatures, Antarctic Ice Extents, Solar cycles, ENSO phases,UAH/RSS troposphere temps, etc., the empirical evidence validating CAGW doesn'treally exist.

Ocean temps are flat, ocean heat content is flat, global temps are flat/falling for 16years, satellite troposphere temps falling for 16 yrs, Antarctic ice sheet growing, noevidence showing correlation/causation between severe weather/CO2, falling trend ofsea rise, healthy coral reefs (many coral reefs are thriving under higher CO2 levels),increased crop yields and forest growth from higher CO2 levels, etc. all show thatrising CO2 isn't the catastrophic event CAGW alarmists try their best to create.

It's time to pull the plug on this invalidated CAGW theory. The world has alreadywasted $TRILLIONS on this sham for no reason whatsoever.

Yes, some warming can certainly be attributed to CO2, but it's nowhere near the3.2C of warming from doubling CO2 to 560ppm the alarmists insist will happen. Theevidence/physics just isn't there. Good research now shows a doubling to 560ppmamy probably add 0.4-0.7C to Earth's temp. Who cares? Warmer is MUCH betterthan colder, within reason of course, and 0.7C of additional CO2 warming is certainlysomething we can all live and thrive on.

Powman - your statements by themselves might be true. But that provesnothing about what causes it. There have been longer periods of drought, lack ofsnow, too much snow, etc. in many regions of the world. Common natural variability.Read old newspapers.

It is unfortunate that the Financial Post continues to promote views on sciencethat are unsupported by the evidence being published in the scientific literature, choosingto instead highlight a press release of scientifically unsupported claims. One does not haveto search far, for example, to find many detailed and rigorous explanations from thescientific community explaining why a statement such as this

"The U.K. Met Office recently released data showing that there has been no statisticallysignificant global warming for almost 16 years."

is false. Even the U.K. Met Office itself has pointed out that this is not an accuratestatement about their data.

The broad scientific conclusions about warming caused by greenhouse gas emissionshave been established for over two decades now. As unpleasant as the reality of oursituation is, neither it nor the evidence for it which has been and continues to be publishedin scientific journals will go away through public relations campaigns denying it.

"Even the U.K. Met Office...."

....has admitted the warming rate since 2000 has slowed down. As of yesterdaycomments were made that effect in a news conference on the status of 2012 surfaceair temperature.

They have said much more than that:

http://metofficenews.wordpress...

In summary, a reduced rate of surface air temperature warming in any shorterterm period is neither unexpected nor inconsistent with human greenhouse gasemissions causing long term warming. This is well understood. Turning this intoclaims that the Met Office data shows warming has stopped and this provesthere is no link between emissions and climate is false. The current body ofscientific evidence simply does not support this.

I guess no one except Ban Ki-Moon agrees that climate change might exist, right?

david • 15 hours ago

1 △ 5 △

David, that is intellectual baby talk. No one is arguing over whether climate change exists. The question is, "are carbon dioxide emissions from human activity causing, or likely in the foreseeable future to cause, dangerous climate change".

These scientists say:"The hypothesis that our emissions of CO2 have caused, or willcause, dangerous warming is not supported by the evidence."

Tom,

Welcome back. How are your good buddies at the Heartland "Institute" doing? Are you still advising those folks? Heartland, apparently, is still widelyrecognized as one of the world's prominent climate science denialorganizations. What's up with that?

http://mediamatters.org/blog/2...

"Meet The Climate Denial Machine"

"Heartland Institute And James Taylor"

"The Economist has called the libertarian Heartland Institute "the world's mostprominent think tank promoting skepticism about man-made climate change."Every year, Heartland hosts an "International Conference on Climate Change,"bringing together a small group of contrarians (mostly non-scientists) who denythat manmade climate change is a serious problem. To promote its most recentconference, Heartland launched a short-lived billboard campaign associatingacceptance of climate science with "murderers, tyrants, and madmen" includingTed Kaczynski, Charles Manson and Fidel Castro. Facing backlash fromcorporate donors and even some of its own staff, Heartland removed thebillboard, but refused to apologize for the "experiment."

"Despite their industry ties and lack of scientific expertise, Heartland Institutefellows are often given a media platform to promote their marginal views onclimate change. Most visible is James Taylor, a lawyer with no climate sciencebackground who heads Heartland's environmental initiative. Taylor dismisses"alarmist propaganda that global warming is a human-caused problem thatneeds to be addressed," and suggests that taking action to reduce emissionscould cause a return to the "the Little Ice Age and the Black Death." But thathasn't stopped Forbes from publishing his weekly column, which he uses tospout climate misinformation and accuse scientists of "doctoring" temperaturedata to fabricate a warming trend. It also hasn't stopped Fox News frompromoting his misinformation."

Heartland follows the familiar recipe of many right wing US "think tanks" whosesole purpose is to obfuscate the truth and to prevent people from thinking
