From the Pastor
4th Sunday of Lent
“Hey, that's not fair!” How many times have we heard this spoken in our family? Family members challenge one another's generosity, operating from
the perspective of limited resources. If we have given to one, perhaps there won't be enough for the other. Jesus wants us to understand that this is not how it is with God's mercy and forgiveness. God offers his love to all of us in abundance. The forgiveness of the father in the parable is an image of God's love for us, generous beyond measure in his love for both of his sons. Can we truly believe that God acts this way towards us and accept his mercy without jealousy, knowing that God's love for another does not diminish his love for us? As you gather as a family, talk about the words and phrases you speak to one another when angry. Identify words or phrases that reflect jealousy towards one another. Talk about why we sometimes feel jealousy towards one another. Read aloud today's Gospel, Luke 15:1-3,11-32. Talk about why the older brother is jealous of the younger brother. Identify words that the family members in the parable might say to one another to begin to heal their broken relationships. Make a family commitment to say these types of words and phrases to one another with greater frequency. Pray together the Lord's Prayer.

DAYS OF PENITENCE
\/iie Season o ent is a time of preparation for Easter and recalls the forty days Jesus spent in the desert / preparing for His public ministry. During this time, a spirit of penance, conversion and prayer prepares the
Church to celebrate the Easter mysteries. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday with the imposition of ashes from burnt palm on the heads or foreheads of the faithful as a sign ofrepentance.
DATE: Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and continues for 40 days, until The Triduum of Holy Week, including Sundays. Lenten penance (prayer and sacrifice) continues until Holy Saturday Evening.
SIGNIFICANT FEASTS & HOLIDAYS Ash Wednesday Laetare Sunday (4th Sunday of Lent) Palm Sunday (Passion Sunday)
LITURGICAL COLOR: Purple
TONE: Lent is a time of somber reflection, sacrifice, fasting, prayer and works of charity. It is the time of retreat for the Church. Liturgical celebrations are muted and direct the faithful to introspection.
SPIRITUAL PRACTICE Stations of the Cross Daily Mass Fasting Prayer Scripture Reading and Study
SPIRITUAL GOAL: Our Lenten observances prepare us to deeply appreciate and understand the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ, known as the Paschal Mystery. By dying to sin and seeking God's grace, we join ourselves to the saving work of Jesus, experiencing in our own life the victory of grace over sin, of life over death.
QlJOTES
r-_p rayer reveals to souls the vanity of earthly goods and pleasures. It fills them with light, strength and consolation; and gives them a foretaste of the calm bliss of our heavenly home. - ST. ROSE OF VITERBO
C onfession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin. All hope consists in confession. In confession there is a chance for mercy. Believe it firmly. Do not doubt, do not hesitate, never despair of the mercy of God. Hope and have confidence in confession. -ST. ]SI DORE OF SEVILLE
CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS: Many people undertake special practices during Lent, especially attending daily Mass. Personal sacrifices and penance should help a person address his or her personal spiritual need, or help overcome a failing , or strengthen one's resistance to temptation. The backbone of all penitential practice consists of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
SUGGESTED SPIRJTUAL PRACTICE
Whatever you choose to do for Lent, do it
regularly and faithfully.
Pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the
Rosary with your family.
