EventhoughfishingisnotallowedinLakesonEldridgeduetoregulationsoftheMUD,wehaveseenariseinthenumberofpeoplefishinginourlakes.Someofthesepeopleareresidents;othershavebeeninappropriatelygainingaccessforthepurposeoffishingandaretherebytrespassing.Stricterproceduresatthefrontgatewillbeenforced,inparttocombatthisissue.Inanyevent,thesefishershavebeenleavingbehindlures,filament,andleadweightsthathavebeendangeroustothewaterfowl,insomeinstancescausingdeath,ascanbeseenfromthesepictures.Pastproblemshaveincluded:amaleswanprotectingitsbabiesgettinghookedthroughthetongue;aswanbeinghookedintheneckfromahomemade"trotline";justlastmonth,alurehookedthroughthemotherswan'sback,draggingher baby who had become entangled in the filament franticallybackandforth;andfinally,oneofourdocilePekingduckschoked

todeathbyfilament.Furthermore,ithasbeenreportedthatsomefishersinhumanelythrowfishtheydonotwishtokeepinthestreetoronthelakebanktodie.

Is Your Home an Internet Broadcaster?(It might be and you don’t even know it)

padlocksymbolareWEPandWPA.WEPfallsintothe“poor”categoryofsecurity.WEPwillkeephonestpeopleoutofyournetwork, andwill prevent someone fromaccidentally gettingconnectedtoyournetwork,butWEPwas“cracked”severalyearsago,andnowadaysitonlytakesalaptopand60secondstobreakintoanetworksecuredwithWEP.

Whatyoushouldbeusing isWPA(orWPA2) toprovidesa connection that (with a good password) can’t be crackedin a comfortable lifetime. Log into your router (usually athttp://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1), go to the wirelesssecuritysettingsandsetitforWPA.Thenchangeyourlaptopsandotherwirelessdevicestomatch.

Therearemanydifferentroutersonthemarket,butthereareafewstandardrulestofollow:Changingthesecuritysettingsonyourroutershouldalwaysbedonewiththecomputerattachedtotherouterviaanetworkcable-don’tchangeitoverawirelessconnection. Ifyoumakeamistake,youwon’tbeabletogetbackintofixit.Inthewirelesssecuritysettingsonyourrouter,youwillseeWEPandSHOULDseeWPAasoptions.Ifyoudon’tseeWPAasanoption,yourrouterisprobablyseveralyearsold.Gotothemanufacturer’ssupportpageontheirwebsiteandlookforupdated“firmware”todownload.Downloadthefirmwareandupdatetherouterpertheinstructionsprovidedbythemanufacturer.Ifthelatestfirmwaredoesn’tprovideWPAencryption,thenit’stimeforatriptoBestBuyorFry’sforanew router. ANYnew routerwill provideWPA encryption.Nextuseastrongpassword. Astrongpasswordshouldbeatleast12characterslong,feelfreetomakeitalotlonger-thelongerthebetter.Besuretouseupperandlowercaseletters,usenumbersANDusespecialcharacterslike#*(\}[@!&.Writeitdownandputitinasafeplace.Ifithelps,use2or3

If you have a wireless router at home, then you are usingoneof threepossible levelsof security,1)none,2)poorand3)whatyouSHOULDbeusing.“None”isrealsimple,openthebox,plugintherouter,connecttotheInternet.Withthisconnection,ANYONEwithinrange,meaningyourneighbors,passersbyandthatannoyingteen-agekiddownthewholikestohangaroundyourhouseintheeveningcanuseyourwirelessnetworktoaccesstheinternetorworse,accessyourcomputersathome.Also,anyillegalactivityovertheInternetisgoingtobetracedbacktoyourhome,nottothepersonorcomputerthatmayhavedoneit.

I often tell the story of the time I moved to Austin fromSacramento41/2yearsagoovertheThanksgivingholiday.IstayedovernightwithafriendinFlagstaff,Arizonaatherparents’home.Lotsofrelativeswerethereandtheyallsmoked(andsmokedalot).Eventhoughitwas35degreesoutside,Iwentandsatinmycarforanhourjusttobreathfreshair.WhileinmycarIpoweredupmylaptopanddiscoveredacompletelyunsecurednetworkwithinrange.Iconnectedtoitandtooktheopportunitytocheckmyemailanddosomewebsurfing.ThenthegoodSamaritaninmedecidedtodothemafavor.Ifiguredtheyhadn’tchangedthedefaultpasswordontheirrouter,andsureenoughIwasright.Iloggedontotheirrouterandtookascreenshotofit.Sincetheywerealsousingthedefaultnamefortheircomputernetwork,Ichangedminetomatchandcouldseethattheyhadacomputerturnedonwithoneoftheirharddrivesshared(no,Ididn’tpeekatit.)IalsosawthattheyhadanEpsonprinterconnectedtoit,soIdownloadedtheprinterdriverandinstalleditonmylaptop,openedMicrosoftWordand pasted the screen shot of their routerintoit.Ialsoincludedinstructionsonhowto keep prying eyes out of their network,thanked themthat Iwasable tocheckmyemail,andthenIPRINTEDthedocumentoutontheirprinter.KeepinmindIhavenoideawhichhouseIhadconnectedto.Iimagineiftheywerehomethattheywerealittleshockedtohavetheirprinterstartallbyitselfandprintanote fromacompletestranger.Luckyforthem Iwasn’t someonewhowanted to copy their files,

Ineverymatch,youwillfindcriticalpointsthatcandeterminewhetheraplayerwinsorlosses.Atthesecriticalpoints,IsuggestreviewingwhatIcallthe“fourawareness”points:

FIRSTAWARENESS:SELFEveryplayerpossessescertainshotsthattheyfeelmorecomfortable

hitting on a critical point. For example, it could be a forehandtopspin,orasliceone.Whenchoosingwhichshottohitonacriticalpoint,decisivelyutilizetheshotthatcomesmorenaturallywithoutchangingyourmind.Thatiswhenmistakesaremade.

SECONDAWARENESS:OPPONENTWhentheplayersdecideonashotatacriticalpoint,theyneed

toconsidertheiropponent’sstrengthsandweaknesses.Duringthematch,theyshouldnoticetheshotstheopponenthaslesssuccesswiththanothers.Onacriticalpoint,playersshouldusetheshottheyfeelmorecomfortablewithbutalsotheywillaimtowardstheiropponent’sweaknesses.

THIRDAWARENESS:COURTOnce you decide on your most consistent shot, consider the

opponent’sweakness,youalsoneedtotakeintoaccountthecourtconditions.Factorssuchasthesun,wind,andsurfacewillmakeadifferenceontheshotexecuted.Whenindoubt,youshouldeitherchooseashottowardanopeningonthecourt,ordirectlyatyouropponent’sfeet;openspacesorshoelaces.

FOURTHAWARENESS:SCOREWhenyoudecideonyourshot,theplacementandbeingaware

of the court challenges, a goodplayer should also remember thescoreinhand.Playerswillbeaggressivewhenthescoreisintheirfavor,andbemoreconservativewhentied,orbehind.Forexample,whenaplayerisservingat40-15,theserveshouldbeapowerfulandassertive.Incontrast,ifthescoreis15-40,theplayershouldservethefirstservewithsomepower,butwithmoreplacement.

Overtime,thesefourawarenesspointswillbecomebothautomaticandreactionaryasplayersbecomemoreexperiencedinplayingandcompeting. After the shot has been properly executed, they willsometimesgive themselves apaton theback fordoing the rightthingattherighttime,and remind themselves thatthey followed the “four awareness”points.
