The Shrimper THE NEWSLETTE R FOR MID KENT GC MEMBERS
July and
August
2016
After many years of competing in the shadow of Loo Brackpool, Julia Ridley finally got to out gun Loo - taking the Cup from her by a clear margin of 3
shots.
On Saturday 18th July, day 1 of the event, Julia shot a gross 78 and 82 on
day 2 for a total of 160.
This was 3 shots clear of Loo who had a gross 85 day 1 and a gross 78 on day 2
for a total of 163
In the Ladies Handicap Cup, Annette Fraser romped home with a superb net 67 on day 1 and a net 68 on day 2 for a total 135. Annette was 8 shots clear of the runner up, Beverley Barrow who
shot a net 70 and 73, total 143.
Chip off the Old Block!
There was a catch in his voice on Sunday 24th July when a very proud MK Pro, Mark Foreman announced the winner of the 2016 MK Club Championship ...….. none other than his 18 year old son Barney!
With rounds of 69 & 74, Barney won with a 2 shot cushion from runner up Shaun Barker who had rounds of 71 & & 74. In the handicap cup, the laurels went to Steve Barrow with a fine score of 67 & 68 nett for a total of 135. Senior winner was Clive Higgs with 2 rounds of 70 for a superb total of 140 nett. Well done all players. Pictures on page 2.

The Club Championships - as we say on our front page,
this year's Club Champion is Barney Foreman.
Barney led from the front shooting 69 on the first day and
then followed this up with a 74 on the trickier second day
when the wind got a bit more blustery.
This saw him through to a famous two shot victory over
Shaun Barker (71+74), with Darren Smith coming third
(74+76).
The Handicap Cup was also won from the front with
overnight leader, Steve Barrow who had a nett 67 in round 1,
keeping his nerve in a very tight finish on the second day, by
adding a nett 68 to win by one solitary shot!
Only two shots covered the top 4 players with Darren Drynan
(68+68) finishing Runner-Up, and Austin "Beef" Saunders
(69+68) coming third. Well played everyone!
Seniors Cup - was also played during the Championships.
Clive Higgs came out on top with two very consistent rounds
of nett 70 to win by 3 shots from Dave Manderson.
Once In A Lifetime Achievement - another great
achievement during "Club Champs" was by Paul Pharo who
had an Albatross 2 at the par 5 eighth hole! Wow!
To put this in perspective, there has only been 110 Albatross
made on the PGA Tour since 1983 (when the statistic started
being recorded), whereas there has been 106 Eagles made
this season alone.
Welcome to a very exclusive Club Paul!

‘’I want to thank all those people who supported me and helped out in various ways on Captain’s day. Starting at 8.30 in the morning with the BBQ was Past Captain Peter Brisley who was out and about from the start until his tee off time, Later I was joined by Vice Captain Steve Barrow and also Paul Johnson both of whom worked tirelessly until 5.00pm when the last competitors went through, My daughter Tracy also helped on the BBQ and some additional shopping for burgers
and sausages etc.
The forum (halfway house) was managed early on by my wife Bríd, Sue James, later by Daphne Lake, and Rita Budd. Savouries and cakes were provided by the various ladies, but, special men-tion must go to Past Captain Dave Watkins who is a possible contender for The Great British Bake off with his delicious Cherry and Lemon Drizzle cakes, all were devoured by the appreciative players. In addition to the ladies in the forum there was also the putting competition to be run, this was looked after by Beverly Barrow and Jane Watkins in the early part of the day, then by Linda Carey and Margaret Beeson and in the latter part
of the day by Sheila Baker.
Thanks must also go to Paul James organising time sheets and slots for everyone, to Mark Fore-man for his help with the prizes , presentation and advice in general, to Peter Lake and Robert in setting out the furniture, BBQ and a host of other items, Lee and his staff for the presentation of the course in such marvellous condition, to Kevin and all the bar staff for their attendance throughout the week, to Leon and his staff for their attention to the various meals and also the BBQ on Sun-day. To you all for supporting this week and for your support throughout the past year. Last but by no means least to my wife Bríd and all my family
for their untiring support.
Thank you all once again. Eamonn Mc Inerney’’

The Shrimper doesn‘t normally cover Births, Deaths & Marriages but Tuesday 23rd August was
something special and probably totally unique, a little bit of golf club history when a current Lady
Captain gave birth during her year of office.
Just a few days before, our Lady Captain was to be seen hard at it hosting the Pow Trophy lunch
and presenting Janet Harbroe with the trophy.
We feel sure that the Shrimper talks for every member at Mid Kent in sending Becky Sherrin and
partner Tom congratulations on the birth of son, Riley.
Winston Trophy - on 14th June, past Lady Captains played for this
prestigious trophy (to be honest a garden gnome!) on their away day (to be
honest, just up the road to Southern Valley GC!).
Winston was carried off by Carol Murray - pictured left - to adorn her trophy
cabinet (to be honest, her garden in The Drive) for the next 12 months!

MK Ladies - doing us proud!
Bradley Cook 2016 - after completing the Round Robin
initial round of the Bradley Cook Ladies Scratch five a side.
MK Ladies went through to the quarter finals and were
drawn against Canterbury.
The first leg was played at home on 22nd July in which MK
had a fantastic result beating the visiting team 4/1. The
team were Loo Brackpool, Julia Ridley, Nicola Sehmi, Brid
McInerney and Annette Fraser.
The away match on 24th July proved a difficult course with
the ball bouncing all over the place - not lush and green like
Mid Kent. Although losing on the day MK won overall 6
matches to 4 go through to the semi-finals on 27/28th
August, again home and away against Chart Hills - some
challenge as Chart Hills had knocked out Sundridge and
have strength in depth sufficient to field two teams. With no
lack of pride and determination our Ladies came up short
out can take pride in their achievement in the tournament as
a whole. The team who played on Saturday were, Kirsty
Galbraith, Loo Brackpool, Nicola Sehmi, Sheila Glass and
Brid McInerney but captain Brid takes this opportunity of
thanking all squad members, caddies & Members for their
Mid Kent A: Shaun Barker with Adam Clarke,
Mid Kent B: Adrian Brett with Mucky Garcher
Mid Kent C: Mark Gee with Liam Cook.
Support.
The team put on a very good show,
for which they can feel justifiably
proud.
MK romp home in Medway Trophy
Played at Kings Hill in somewhat hit
& miss weather on 28th August,
there was some impressive scores
considering the conditions and the
foursomes format which is not used
that often nowadays.
After the first 18 holes Dartford, with
98 points, held a slender 1 point
advantage over Sheerness on 97
points, with Gillingham a close third
with 96 points.
The afternoon round saw Mid Kent
come from 6th place in the
morning with 93 points to claim the
Medway Trophy with a 36-hole total
of 198 points.
Great comeback, well done guys !

Jokers Winter Crib League
Fancy Playing Crib?
Looking for a new hobby to fill those dark Winter evenings?
Do you know how to play crib or would like to learn?
Well, here‘s your chance at Mid Kent with a jolly crowd of
golfing & social members…… on Friday evenings at 7:30 or
so, in the 7 months from early October to early April. You
won‘t need to play every week, you‘ve just got to fit in
around a dozen league & knockout game in those twenty
odd weeks. No pressure!
If you‘re put off by not knowing the rules here‘s a simple
guide. It's one of the easiest card games to learn and
certainly one of the most satisfying. Once you've read
through them, you'll be playing in no time!
Crib belongs to the family of card games known as 'adders' -
that is, games in which the idea is to add successive card
values to a running total with the aim of making certain totals
- in this case, 31. In the first phase of the hand, players take
turns playing a card from their hand which is added to the
running total. Two points are scored for making the total 15
or 31. Pairs and sequences also earn points. Once the
hands have been played out in this way, the players then
score points based on the pairs and sequences in their
hands, plus the combinations that add up to 15, and record
the score on the cribbage board.
Want to know more? If so, please contact the Shrimper
editor, Bob Greenfield on 01474 363315, the crib league
President, Aubrey Phillips or any of the current members
such as Brian Weston, Howard Lambie, Cliff Jones, Richard
Smith, Jack Pender and John O‘Toole.
You‘ll be most welcome!
