The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Central Florida Chapter presented John Bozard with the Outstanding Fundraising Professional award at their 28th Annual National Philanthropy Day Awards taking place on November 22 at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes.

In 1998, a decade after creating the Orlando Health Foundation, and having held various leadership roles throughout the organization, John Bozard returned to the Foundation as president. His charge was to lead philanthropic growth at a critical point in the organization’s history. Due to John’s visionary leadership, the level of philanthropic support for Orlando Health has increased significantly and, to date, the Foundation has raised a total of $341,759,073 in support of Orlando Health’s mission of service to the community. While these numbers are certainly impressive, they become even more compelling when realized in the context of the healthcare programs and services that are provided to the community and the lives that are forever touched.

Once a year, the AFP Central Florida Chapter proudly recognizes the local heroes who make dreams come true through a community-wide event called National Philanthropy Day. The Outstanding Fundraising Professional award honors fundraisers who have excelled in every aspect of the profession, exhibiting a commitment to the profession and demonstrating impact through service.

“I have had the opportunity to see first-hand John’s deep commitment to our mission, his knowledge of the business of philanthropy and his skill in achieving our goals,” says Kathy Johnson, immediate past chair and board member, Orlando Health Foundation. “John exemplifies the character, commitment and talent necessary to successfully represent our philanthropic mission.”

Today, as Orlando Health nears its centennial and prepares to serve the community in a new era of healthcare over the next 100 years, we are in the midst of the largest expansion and renovation project in our history. John’s legacy, like so many of Orlando Health’s major philanthropic benefactors, is ensuring that Orlando Health is well-positioned to continue serving our community well into the next centennial.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is the professional association of individuals and organizations that generates philanthropic support for a wide variety of charitable institutions. Representing more than 30,000 members in 235 chapters throughout the world, AFP works to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs in order to promote stewardship, donor trust and effective and ethical fundraising.

Chairman Philip Rich is a long-standing resident of the Orlando area, having received his undergraduate and MBA degrees from Rollins College. Currently chief market strategist for Seaside National Bank and Trust, Philip’s community service includes membership on several boards and committees and past president of the alumni board of the Rollins College Crummer Graduate School of Business. He has been a Foundation board member since 1997 and has served as treasurer and chair of the Foundation’s Finance, Investment & Planned Giving Committee. In addition to his dedicated Foundation involvement, Philip and his wife, Shelly, embrace our mission to support the strategic priorities of Orlando Health.

Incoming vice chairman Kathryn Garrett, MD, president and CEO of Medical Center Radiology Group (MCRG), joined the Foundation board in 2003, serving on the Community Leadership Council, Women Playing For T.I.M.E.® Committee, and as chairman of the Physician Giving Committee. An MCRG physician for 24 years, Dr. Garrett has served on the Florida Board of Medicine for several years, including one year as chair. As part of MCRG, one of Orlando Health’s most generous physician partners, Dr. Garrett has demonstrated her strong belief in the work of the Foundation. Personally, she has furthered that belief with her husband, Audley Murphy, as donors supporting the mission of Arnold Palmer Medical Center.

C. wonder-ful Event Raises Funds for Hospitals CoRPoRAtE PARtNER: ABC Fine wine & spiritsOn November 14, the Orlando Health Foundation – Southwest Community Board and the newly formed Orlando Health Young Philanthropists hosted an invitation-only event at the new C. Wonder store at The Mall at Millenia. C. Wonder, which features fashionable apparel, accessories and home décor amid bright, colorful surroundings, treated 200 guests to an evening of light desserts and wine, with hourly door prizes and a 15 percent shopping discount. In addition, C. Wonder generously donated 10 percent of sales at the event to Orlando Health to benefit Dr. P. Phillips Hospital and Health Central Hospital.

In 2007, Jess Bailes, executive vice president, ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, joined the Orlando Health Foundation Board. ABC Fine Wine & Spirits has been a valued sponsor at the Community Partner level of ONE NIGHT to Celebrate Excellence in Trauma Care, presented by CNL, since the event’s inception. The event raises critical funding and awareness for Central Florida’s only Level One Trauma Center located at Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC).

Taste For Learning

In September of 2012, Jess Bailes helped to facilitate a new partnership between Valencia Foundation and Orlando Health Foundation for the wine and culinary event, Taste for Learning. The event, held at Rosen Shingle Creek, benefits

student scholarships at Valencia College and the Medical Education Program at Orlando Health.

ABC Fine Wine & Spirits has partnered with WPFT for many years, donating wine selections for the annual golf tournament luncheon as well as philanthropic contributions to support the needs of MD Anderson – Orlando. with numerous charitable organizations throughout Central Florida. Their

involvement with Orlando Health began in 2008 with Scott’s work for Now I

Lay Me Down to Sleep, an organization offering complimentary photography

to families facing the loss of a baby.

“It is a profound privilege to share in a very

personal experience with these families and

help them in their healing process through

beautiful remembrance photos of their

children,” says Scott. “This experience

connected me in a special way to

the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

(NICU) at Winnie Palmer Hospital.”

Scott has continued to find new

and creative avenues for combining

his passion for photography, video

and the NICU through volunteering.

He worked with the Spiritual Care

and Clinical Social Work departments at

Winnie Palmer Hospital to create, “Pathways,”

a video of parents’ reflections in a time of loss.

The goal of the video, which took more than a year to

produce, is to bring comfort to other families suffering the loss of a child.

Scott has also worked with members of Arnold Palmer Medical Center’s

volunteer and clinical teams to produce videos and photography. Most

recently, he photographed more than 50 nurses at Winnie Palmer Hospital

for a photo collage honoring an associate.

“There is a great sense of community here because everyone is connected

through a shared purpose,” says Scott. “I never feel like a stranger and always

receive a thank you and a smile. I know the patients and families feel this too.”

When Scott and Elaine learned of the critical need to expand the NICU,

they made a 1918 Society gift through the Elaine Berol Taylor and Scott

Bevan Taylor Foundation. They have also attended the Tiny Baby Ball held in

support of the NICU.

Arnold Palmer Hospital Receives Gift from PGA touR Friend

PGA TOUR golfer and two-time heart transplant recipient, Erik

Compton, directs award money to Arnold Palmer Hospital.

Erik Compton was recently announced as the recipient of the first-ever PGA TOUR Courage Award. As an award recipient, Erik received $25,000 to give to the charities of his choice, and Erik chose to donate $12,500 to Arnold Palmer Hospital.

The Courage Award honors a player who has overcome adversity, and Erik is certainly a shining example. After being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, Erik received a heart transplant in 1992. Over the next nine years, he rose to the rank of number one junior golfer in the country, turning pro in 2001. He received a second heart transplant in 2008. Currently, Erik has just finished his second full year on the PGA TOUR, earning four top 25 finishes.

“The work and generosity of the Palmer family has affected so many children in Florida, as well as my own,” says Erik. “The Palmers have been dear friends for many years and have given endless love and support to so many, including me. This is why it’s very fitting to honor Mr. Palmer and Arnold Palmer Hospital.”

walgreens orlando international dragon Boat Festival Record Year Raises Significant Funds for MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando

This year, the Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival welcomed 84 teams at Walt Disney World, making it the largest Florida festival to date. More than 1,850 paddlers traveled to Orlando from 12 cities across the country and three other countries: Trinidad, Tobago and Canada.

Orlando Health organized seven teams, consisting of executive leadership, physicians, clinicians and departments from across the organization. WPFT had a number of boats participating in the festival, along with crews of fundraisers and supporters. In addition to a full day of racing, participants and attendees gathered for a heartfelt ceremony to honor those who have lost their battle with cancer.

Following the ceremony, two City of Orlando “Magic Dragons” teams as well as Team SWEAT, a team of fitness gurus from SWEAT gym in Winter Park, presented generous checks to the festival on behalf of WPFT, totaling more than $50,000 combined!

PEt tHERAPy PRoGRAm CoNtiNuEs to FlouRisH tHANks to doNoR-AdvisEd FuNd GiFtThe Orlando Health Pet Therapy Program has been the recipient of $60,000 over the last few years, thanks to the donor-advised fund of an animal-loving physician.

The Orlando Health Pet Therapy Program is a shining example of a valuable hospital program that is thriving due to a successful combination of dedicated volunteer service and continued philanthropic support. Over the last three years, Chris Barley, a financial advisor with Ameriprise Financial, has directed $60,000 in support of the program through a donor-advised fund of a well-known area ophthalmologist who loved dogs and truly believed in their healing abilities.

The generous gift has helped the Pet Therapy Program expand its role in all Orlando Health hospitals as an effective complement to the exceptional clinical care we deliver to our patients. While there are obvious emotional benefits that are evident in seeing how our patients interact with the animals, the science has shown that there are real clinical benefits as well, by helping to reduce patients’ anxiety and stress levels. The program also provides innovative opportunities for animal-assisted therapy within select hospital units. Program

leaders encourage participation in team training programs to increase knowledge about the Pet Therapy Program within the organization, and they are also expanding community education outreach efforts.

Philanthropic support has truly helped to strengthen and solidify this program that began as the vision of one volunteer, with one dog, and a heartfelt desire to help. Twelve years later, the Orlando Health Pet Therapy Program is organization-wide — with 33 handlers and their amazing dogs — and is embraced by our patients, families and team members alike.

“I feel very fortunate to be involved in this program,” says Chris Barley. “These Pet Therapy teams bring great joy and comfort to patients and staff at Orlando Health. A visit from a pet therapy dog can really make someone’s day.”

iN mEmoRium -Robert Randolph (Randy) lyon Jr.It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Randolph (Randy) Lyon Jr., a dedicated and long-standing board member of the Orlando Health Foundation, on November 4, 2013. A board member since 2000, Randy was involved in the planning and implementation of several major Foundation initiatives and campaigns, and was a member of the Corporate Giving, Education and Giving, and One Night Trauma committees. In addition to dedicating his talents to the Foundation board, Randy and his wife, Andrea, were also generous philanthropic supporters of Orlando Health.

Randy attended Rollins College and led a successful career in real estate development that included many local, national and international projects. A dedicated community volunteer and advocate, Randy was also a beloved son, husband, father and grandfather, and he will be deeply missed.

“We are saddened by the loss of a dear friend to all who touched so many lives,” reflects John Bozard, president, Orlando Health Foundation. “We are honored that Randy shared his talents with the Foundation and doubly honored that his family asked that gifts made in Randy’s memory be directed to support our Trauma Center at ORMC – a cause for which Randy worked tirelessly in this community.”
