After winning the installation-level Best Warrior Competition this spring and taking the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command’s competition by force, Noncommissioned Officer of the Year winner Staff Sgt. Joseph Hansen and Soldier of the Year winner Pfc. David Cox are busy preparing to move on to the Department of the Army level. Hansen said both the Fort Leonard Wood and TRADOC competitions were comparable.
“They both tested our knowledge and skills to gauge our capabilities,” he said. “A main difference was how long each were. (The Fort Leonard Wood competition) was a shortened version with the same number of events. This added a level of stress to the overall competition.” Hansen added, “Overall, TRADOC Best Warrior Competition was a great training event, which made the competitors better.”

Soldiers and civilians with 1st Engineer Brigade welcomed Col. Kip Korth as their new commander in a ceremony held July 11 on Gammon Field. During the change-of-command ceremony, Korth accepted the unit’s colors as he assumed command from Col. Dale Snider. In Snider’s farewell message, he said he could not take credit for all of the brigade’s successes during his tenure. “Sapper Brigade, you are one-of-a-kind,” he said. “I am so very proud of your accomplishments. I am so very proud to be part of this historic unit. I am so very proud to be associated with all of you. I am proud of you.” He added, “The 1st Engineer Brigade has a diverse and working mission. They’re the best civilians, Soldiers and training partners anyone could ask for; the best drill se geants, commanders and command sergeants major.”
Brig. Gen. Robert Whittle, U.S. Army Engineer School commandant, said Snider has unlimited potential in the Army. “He sets the example for others, and he holds his Soldiers to the same standard,” Whittle said. “But most importantly, he knows his Soldiers; he cares about them, he takes initiative, and he’s an expert in his craft.”

Rizzo took command from Marine Col. George Markert, who has been in command since 2016. In his farewell remarks, Markert talked about what Fort Leonard Wood meant to him. “This is the strongest community I think I’ve ever seen in the DoD, and I say that with no reservation,” he said. “During my first change of command, I mentioned three things: Army, Marines and community. A ceremony was held August 28 on Gammon Field promoting Donna Martin to the rank of major general. The promotion ceremony preceded Martin taking command of the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood.
Lt. Gen. Gwendolyn Bingham, Installation Management assistant chief of staff, presided over the ceremony and said the day marked a monumental achievement for the Army and Fort Leonard Wood.
“It is a great day when we can promote any Soldier to the next higher grade or rank,” Bingham said. “It is absolutely a magnanimous achievement when a general officer adds another star and is given the privilege to command an organization and to lead America’s sons and daughters.” She added, “Without a doubt, Brig. Gen. Martin has worked very hard throughout her 30-year career. She is a tremendous leader, a trailblazer and a consummate professional who achieves excellence in all that she has done. She is a role model and trusted leader for all.”
Bingham said it is the tough jobs Martin has held that have provided her with the foundational leadership knowledge, allowing her to ascend through the ranks.
Martin said she didn’t make it this far in her career on her own, noting the support of her husband, Chris, her family and others.
