Formation of AdverbsAn adverb is a word that describes - or modifies, as grammarians put it - a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

It is easy to see how adverbs describe, or modify, verbs, since they simply explain most about the action. For example:

He quickly runs

She slowly walks

Formation of Adverbs

Most Spanish adverbs are formed by adding –mente (the equivalent of the English –ly) to the adjective.

Adjectives ending- in o change to an a before adding mente.

If two or more adverbs are used together, both change the –o to –a

If the adjective has an accent, the adverb retains it.

There is a difference in the way that the objects of the prepositions are perceived.

Rather than give you a long theoretical explanation, I’ll give you an acronym for para: P.E.R.F.E.C.T.

What about ‘por’?What about ‘por’?

Essentially, por is used in all instances when P.E.R.F.E.C.T. does not apply.

However, if you like to collect acronyms, here is one to use with por: A.T.R.A.C.T.E.DThis acronym covers many, but not all, of the main uses of por. There are many idiomatic expressions that use por.
