An Adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

Adverb Modifying a Verb

Answers only one question:To what extent?

Adv. Modifying an Adj. or another Adv.

Varies within a sentence

If modifying a verb, it may precede or follow it or even interrupt a verb phrase.

Normally, adverbs modifying adjectives or other adverbs will immediately precede (come before) the words they modify.

• Many adverbs are formed by

the addition of –ly to an adjective.

Adv. The professor looked at her notes pensively.

We discussed the matter openly.

Adverb or Adjective?

• Some adjectives, however,

also end in –ly. • Therefore, you cannot assume

that every word ending in –ly is an adverb.
