FORCE update
Anne-Marie Belliveau, P.Eng., M.Sc., PMP®
Director of Operations Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy fundyforce.ca
FORCE
A FORCE of Nature • Fundy: 160 billion tonnes of water • Minas Passage: 14 billion tonnes,
7000 MW • 13 m tidal height • Current speeds over 5m/s or 18km/h
2
In-stream tidal technology • Essentially an underwater
windmill. • RPM much slower, as water
is 800 times more dense than air.
• In contrast to a dam, turbine placed in passive water flow – potential for smaller environmental footprint.
• No standard yet.
Key roles FORCE – catalyst to safe development of in-stream tidal energy technology Host: onshore + offshore infrastructure, grid connection Monitoring: transparent environmental monitoring + reporting Research: site characterization Engagement: connecting industry, science, government and public
Our Developer Partners
Black Rock Tidal Power
Atlantis Resources
Minas Energy
Cape Sharp Tidal Venture
Key assets Support: • Provincial Feed-in Tariffs • Federal CEAA threshold to 50MW • Legislation

Shore Based Monitoring X Band Radar: •Surface currents •Enhanced Modeling Weather Station: •High Res Imagery •Real time site data
Environmental Effects Monitoring • 20 studies available online:
http://fundyforce.ca/environment/monitoring/
• Studies span 2009-2013, including: lobster and fish tracking and
movements marine mammals seabirds marine acoustic environment benthic habitat electromagnetic fields
Environmental Monitoring
New Environmental Effects Monitoring Program • FORCE is designing a new program
to implement before the next turbine is deployed.
• Based on external review of past studies and lessons learned
New Monitoring Program
Engagement Activities • FORCE’s EMAC and
CLC • Fishers and First
Nations meetings • Conferences • Public meetings • Media releases and
social media
What’s Next: 20MW by 2020 Commercial Demonstration • Multi-device testing • Sustainable development
Immediate needs: • Iterative environmental effects
monitoring • Upgraded electrical facility
Future Expansion: • Technical planning for 20MW by 2020 • Site assessment, public engagement,
permitting and approvals • Investment, legislation, FIT
