    PURCHASE YOUR DUTCH WINDMILL

  • Determining your water needs The first, and most important step in buying any windmill is to determine the requirements of water production that the windmill must meet. A windmill can be used for many applications. Most installations pump water from either a well, or an open body of water, such as a dugout or pond. When using a well, the well needs to be drilled so as to allow an adequate supply of water to the windmill. If a well is already in place, tests must be done to determine the capabilities of that particular well. As shown on the cover page of this package, your windmill pump must be below the static water depth at the rated pumped water depth. This is very important, as it ensures that your windmill will be supplied with an adequate water supply. It is very important that you have a professional check your well to determine how much water output your well is capable of. This ensures that you will be buying a windmill that suits your well installation. Another important aspect of windmills is to determine how much wind is in your area. This will ensure that your windmill will be installed in the most effective place. It will also help you to design a storage tank if needed, to ensure that you have water at all times. Once these things are established, and your pump depth is known, decisions on what model of windmill to buy may be determined. We have enclosed a consumers checklist at the end of this document that we suggest you fill out in order to better understand your windmill design requirements.

    Windmill Model Selection Dutch Industries currently has 3 models of windmills to choose from:

    Dutch - Delta Jr. Windmill This model is designed for water levels up to 100ft (30m) in depth (rated pumped water depth). Depending on the pump that is purchased this windmill can produce an output of 5 to 12 gallons (20 to 45 liters) per minute. This design regulates its speed by a rotating tail. The cut in windspeed is approximately 4 1/2 miles (7.3 km) per hour. The speed of this particular windmill is governed by the tail. Thus the windmill will never stop turning. For winterization, the sucker rod must be disconnected, and the windmill laid down.

  • Dutch - F8 Windmill This model is designed for water levels up to 100ft (30m) in depth (rated pumped water depth). Depending on the pump that is purchased this windmill can produce an output of 5 to 12 gallons (20 to 45 liters) per minute. This design regulates its speed by a furling tail. The cut in windspeed is approximately 4 1/2 miles (7.3 km) per hour, and when the wind speed reaches 22 miles (35.4 km) per hour the windmill stops turning. The advantage to a furling tail is that the windmill may be taken out of service by furling the tail from the ground, whereas a non furling windmill must be disassembled to accomplish this.

    Dutch - Delta 16 Windmill This model is designed for water levels up to 500ft (152.4m) in depth (rated pumped water depth). Depending on the pump that is purchased this windmill can produce an output of 3 to 27 gallons (11 to 96 liters) per minute. Deeper wells may be used by using special pumps, but the water output will be reduced. The Delta 16 regulates its speed by a furling tail. The cut in windspeed is approximately 7 1/2 miles (12 km) per hour, and when the wind speed reaches 22 miles (35.4 km) per hour the windmill stops turning. The advantage to a furling tail is that the windmill may be taken out of service by furling the tail from the ground, whereas a non furling windmill must be disassembled to accomplish this. This model is shown on the cover page. All Models of Dutch Windmills are continually being improved, and specifications are subject to change without notice.   • Pump Selection for your Windmill Pump selection is very important when purchasing a windmill to pump water. There are several pieces of information which are needed before a pump is selected: 1. How Deep is the rated pumped water depth in my well?

    This determines how large your pump can be. The deeper the pumped water depth, the less volume of water that can be pumped, due to the size of pump and its rated maximum lift. This is the limiting factor of how much water flow your windmill will be capable of. 2. How much water flow do you require of the windmill?

    To select the correct size of pump that you wish to use, you must know what your maximum flow rate of water needs to be. Make sure that you use a realistic flow rate, as larger pumps cost a lot more money. Also make sure that the well in which you are installing the windmill can produce the amount of water that you are asking it to produce. If you choose too large of a pump, it might lower your water level, and run the pump dry. Remember that you will need to design a storage tank for periods of time when the winds are light, and the windmill is not pumping water. 3. When selecting a pump, remember the following points.

    Remember that the size of the pump that you choose does not relate to the depth of the well, except for the maximum depth. The main reason why there is a maximum depth is because the pump rod can only take a certain amount of force on it, and because a larger pump will increase the starting wind speed. Most people believe that the deeper the well is, the more water there is to pull up to the surface. This is not true. The forces involved are directly related to the size of the piston in the pump, and the pressure (head) that is on the piston. Example: If I were to select a 3 Pump and install it on a site with a well with a 200 ft

    water level, it would pump a maximum flow rate of 6.6125 Gal/min. If I were to put that same 3 Pump and install it on a site with a 100 ft water level, it

    would still pump a maximum flow rate of 6.6125 Gal/min. The only change would be that the 3 pump in the 100ft well would begin pumping at a slightly lower wind speed,

    due to the decreased pressure (head) on the piston. Note: These numbers are based on a Delta 16 Windmill, but the same principles apply to the Delta Jr. and F8 Windmills. Another fact that most people do not realize is that the diameter of the pipe used to bring up the water from the pump does not effect the volume of water that the windmill can pump. The only thing that changes is the velocity of the water. If the velocity is to great, a larger pipe size may be used to reduce the velocity.

  • There are several other factors involved in selecting the correct components for your windmill. For a windmill which is over 500 feet in depth, the pump rod diameter should be increased from the standard 7/16 inch rod to 5/8 inch rod. Doing this does restricts the flow somewhat, and the pipe size used in installation might need to be increased. Below is a list of pumps which are standard in the industry. Other pumps can be bought, but are generally not cost effective, as they are custom manufactured.

    NOTES:

    1.) Larger pumps than recommended in the chart may be selected. This will result in the windmill needing slightly more wind speed to get started, but will result in more volume being pumped over a given period of time. Smaller pumps may pump less water, but the windmill will start pumping at lower wind speeds, therefore the windmill will be pumping water more often. 2.) MAX FLOW is calculated at a wind speed of 22.4miles per hour or 36 kilometres per hour or 10 metres per second. This is the approximate wind speed when the windmill furls and stops.

    3.) Pump rod diameter will have to be increased for lift of 500 feet (153 m) or more.

    4.) For situations not covered by this chart, the diameter of the pump is equal to 44.17over the square root of the lift. 5.) Larger pumps are available by special order.

    Note: When using pipe for your windmill, it is very important that you select the correct size and quality. We do not recommend using any pipe that is thinner than Sch. 40 (4mm), but if you do use any type of pipe that is thinner than Sch 40 (4mm) then the pipe couplers that are used must tighten until no thread shows on the pipe. If this rule is ignored, the pipe may break at this connection.

    NOTE: Dutch Industries strives to give the most competitive prices possible, but in cases where freight is at a high cost for down hole components, our customers generally buy our windmill and a pump, and supply all of the downhole parts such as Pipe, Sucker Rod, Pipe Couplings, and Coupling Nuts. As each of these parts is variable as per each installation, it is difficult for us to predetermine these parts without a well depth.

  • CONSUMERS CHECKLIST

    1. What is the average wind speed at the location for the period the wind turbine will be operational?

    2. Are there objects surrounding the site that will interfere with wind flow?

    3. Where is the water located? (Well, Dug-out, Stream, etc.) 4. If the water is located in a well, what is the casing diameter, volumetric output, and draw-down?

    5. What is the vertical lift of the water? 6. What is the length and diameter of horizontal pipe?

    7. How much water is required daily and monthly?

    8. Is the daily requirement of water critical?

    9. Do you have a storage reservoir, if so what size is it?

    10. Is this a permanent location?

    11. Will this be a seasonal application?

    12. How often will the site be checked?
