Someone once said, “Spring is a tough act to follow so God created June.” Here we are in June and leaving behind a wonderful spring and looking forward to a fabulous celebration of our 40th year here at the UICC. How blessed we are! Kicking off June is a visit from the Prime Minister of Ireland, Taoiseach Enda Kenny, T.D. The Consul General of Ireland, Philip Grant, your UICC Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of the United Irish Societies proudly invite all of you to a reception here at the UICC on June 4th 6:30- 8 pm. If you will kindly RSVP if you haven’t already to SanFranConGen@dfa.ie , the Consul’s Office will be sure to include you among those present at the reception. Truly, the UICC is the Center of all things Irish in the Bay Area! Welcome Taoiseach Enda Kenny! The ICCC’s Scholarship Event in early May was outstanding! Caitie O’Shea’s slide show shown at the Annual General Meeting during the last week in May was an outstanding testimony to much hard work and special caring put into scholarship awards for exceptional elementary and high school students. Additionally, special recognition and “hats off ” to Peggy Nevin and Kay Gulbengay for the effort put into the wonderful raffle and dance at the Center. Monies have been raised for the library, scholarships, and cultural events at the Center. The ICCC has truly served as the “foundation” of the Center’s mission. One of the highlights of June is the “Mad Hatter Tea Party” on June 22nd. Special thanks to Anne Carew for the incredible effort that goes into this delightful event. Get your tickets early! In my research and reading on various Irish Heritage Centers in America, it has come to the fore-front that, as the Chicago Irish American Heritage Center points out, “hundreds of passionate volunteers, and a large professional staff ” seem to be the norm. We should all be so proud of the incredible efforts made at our Center with a much, much smaller group of dedicated folk. However, if we are to move beyond the forty years we have been around, there is a critical need for serious consideration of increasing the number of volunteers, functioning committees and general buy-in for use of our fantastic facilities and dining. In my estimation, you have a hard-working Board of Directors at the UICC, an incredible effort through the ICCC’s scholarship, library and cultural efforts and with these cornerstones in place, we should be able to move to the next step in assuring the sustainability of our beloved Center. June 16th is Bloomsday in Dublin to honor James Joyce. While I have never been able to tackle Ulysses, I did read The Dubliners (1914). Joyce died ten days after I was born and, those of you who are researchers can now figure out just how old your UICC President Board of Directors President is!! One could start his/her summer reading with Joyce!

It was a great night at the annual Emerald Society dinner. This year’s honoree’s (UICC members) Tom Maguire and Roger Gargano. Tom was accompanied by his wife Maureen (nee Mulcrevy) and 5 children and his brothers (John, Pat, Dan, Steven) and sisters (Mary, Christianne). Tom’s speech was touching, funny and honored his mother’s birthday, Christy Ann Maguire (RIP). Roger’s brother Kip, wife Diane, and family and extended family were in attendance.

Siobhan Clare very excited for her two sister’s visit from Dublin, Marian and Breda. They came to celebrate Siobhan’s daughter Maggie’s First Communion. Siobhan planned every minute of their visit – the poor sisters were exhausted!! – at least they had great weather.

St. Mary’s Gael’s Men’s Rugby are the USA 2014 National Champions!! Team mates include Joey Reavey (parents Trish and Kevin Reavey, grandparents Bridget and Joe Byrne) and Kevin O’Connor (parents Elizabeth and Tom O’Connor, grandparents Nora and Kevin (RIP) O’Sullivan and Rose and Denis (RIP) O’Connor). It was a great evening with St. Mary’s alum, family and friends celebrating --Molly and Mark Burke, Kerry and Frank Hagan, Dan O’Connell, (Kevin’s uncle) TJ and Tina O’Sullivan , and many, many more… Congratulations Gaels!

IRISH IN THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR The battlefield at Gettysburg is replete with memorials and monuments honoring the Union and Confederate soldiers who fought so bravely on those hallowed grounds over 150 years ago. One notable monument decorated with shamrocks commemorates the courageous men of the “Fighting 69th” or the Irish Brigade. The designation “Fighting 69th” was allegedly given to the Irish Brigade at the battle of Fredericksburg by General Robert E. Lee. The Irish fought bravely on both sides in the American Civil War. As with most people who fought in war, their motives were varied: some fought from patriotism, some from economic need, some, who were members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, to gain military experience in order to fight the British in their native Ireland. Although more Irishmen fought on the side of the Union, there were a number of Confederate units made up of Irish Americans and seven of the Confederate generals were Irish born. At the battle of Fredericksburg, there was a fierce battle between the Irish fighting on the side of Union and the Irish on the Confederate side with members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood on both sides. The Irish served both as infantry men and in command positions in the Union army. Colonel Patrick O’Rorke, commander of a Union unit, from Co. Cavan died heroically defending Little Rock Dome during a crucial part of the Battle of Gettysburg. General Meade, who was commander of the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg, was from an old Irish-American family who arrived in the United States in the mid 1700s. Brigadier General Thomas Meagher, one of the commanders of the Irish Brigade, had been a participant in the Rebellion of 1848 in Ireland. The “Fighting 69th “or the Irish Brigade was formed in September 1861 and served with distinction in most of the major campaigns of the Civil War, suffering its greatest losses at Fred-ericksburg. The Brigade was disbanded in June 1864 due to devastating losses. The lineage of the Irish Brigade has been officially assigned to “Fighting 69th” of the New York National Guard, which is the only currently active military unit that formed part of it. The Irish Brigade subse-quently served in World War I & II and more recently as part of the New York National Guard in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you would like to learn more about the Irish in the American Civil War, the Patrick J. Dowling has several interesting books on this topic.
