Meeting Sunday.15th

March

Sunday March 15 dawned cold, wet and miserable. But that did not stop fourteen brave souls from turning up, knowing we had an eggsacting demonstration to look forward to. First though, the workshop had to be shifted around to make space for us all to be inside, so we didn’t get started until ten o’clock, and by then of course it was coffee time! As there were under five hundred members present we were quite legitimate in holding our meeting, and we elbowed ourselves into our seats. It was decided that there was no point in any official business so Meg proceeded with her demonstration on How to make an egg-shaped box which became two egg cups on completion. Meg is always very well organised and methodical, and the demonstration was a great eggsample of her eggcellent turning style, and caused much eggcitement. Afterwards some well cooked sausages were enjoyed by all. June McKimmie

Show and Tell

It was “quality not quantity” for this month’s show and tell. On the coldest March morning for 7 years, show and tell was held inside under the expert guidance and direction of Jack.

Meg Webster: From the top turner a most elegant “lady size” pepper grinder turned from unknown wood and immaculately finished to yield a most functional item.

Libby and Greg Beaman: A real team result!. “Base by Greg Shade by Libby”. The base has been crafted from “hard” Pear Wood and decoratively enhanced by careful burning. The colorful handmade shade topped off this most functional item.

Ken Cooper: Let’s get things done correctly! Ken has made this jig for setting up the tool rest on the grinder. Note the chain so that it will not be misplaced or go walkabout!

Thanks Tim MacGregor for the show and tell descriptions and Gordon Scott for the photos.

Next challenge is as Easter is coming up, to follow Megs demo and produce an egg/egg

cup or another form of lidded box. You should have no trouble in following Jonathan’s description of the demonstration. REMINDER Don’t forget the shop. We have so many items for sale. Just ask Meg. You will save yourself a lot of time and effort and money by shopping at the workshop.

SAUSAGE SIZZLES - Bunnings have advised that all sausage sizzles have been postponed to a date to be advised due to the current virus pandemic. Bunnings Belrose have provided us with a $500.00 store voucher to help alleviate the loss of income for which we are very grateful. Bunnings Belrose have also graciously donated three 2.4 x 1.2 sheets of 15mm ply for making Possum Boxes, we will be able to make 12 boxes from this for donation to WIRES. Whilst talking about Sausage sizzles, Gordon McKenzie’s daughter brought him up for a visit to the last sizzle, was good to see him. On a sad note I have to advise that Graham Truelove passed away on Tue 17th March. after suffering from a very rare neurological disease. He was a popular member who organised the clubs Christmas parties and other functions and was co editor of this newsletter. He will be greatly missed. Our sympathy and condolences to his wife Barbara and his family.

June McKimmie: Using June’s “bowl saver” this little red gum bowl was rescued from a much larger item made by Norm. It is finished with Organ Oil and will be a gift for June’s granddaughter.

Jack Butler: A very fine three cornered Jacaranda bowl. The edges finished with a black, water based, line and then the whole item finished with four coats of polyurethane. Jack still has eight fingers and two thumbs! Plus:- Two perfectly matched Huon Pine grinders sitting in a neat Huon Pine dish. All finished with 2 part Rustins that have stood the test of time and use. They are as good as the day they were originally turned.

Master Class with Meg… An eager audience awaited the commencement of Meg’s eggcup demonstration.

And with her trademark good-natured grin…

…. Meg set about finding the centre of a 160mm x 40mm x 40mm piece of New Guinea Rosewood, known for its nice fragrance.

Rounding seemed to only take a few deft passes of the roughing gauge and bingo!

Throughout the course of her demo, Meg gave several safety and general turning tips. The first of these was always to work from a drawing. The remaining tips are listed at the end of this note and are well worth following

Having popped a spigot on each end of the cylinder and then cut it to size, Meg moved it from the live centre to a chuck and commenced shaping it using her favourite tool, the spindle gauge.

Note how Meg is using the underhand grip to hold the tool, how the tool is resting on the tool-rest and how expertly she has found the cutting edge of the spindle, creating a little shavings firework display! Next, a centre hole was drilled using the Jacob’s chuck.

And then the hollowing and further shaping began…

Page 6: for March · Michell Farnill, Andrew Forsyth, Richard Helm, Lionel Hirning, Simon Hunter, Gary Klopfer, Peter Lun, June McKimmie, Matthew Parish, Takami Sawauchi, Meg Webster and

… and the eggcup started taking shape!

After applying EEE Ultra friction polishing compound, Meg then applied a coat of a shellac-based polish for hardening. The eggcup was then parted from the lathe using a very thin parting tool.

Next, Meg started on the base of the eggcup

by splitting another cylinder and once again using callipers and a parting tool to measure it all up.

It’s worth drawing attention to the way in which Meg is approaching the lathe in terms of her posture, how her elbow is tucked in and how she is gripping the tool.

After shaping, again with a spindle gauge, the base emerged.

Finally, Meg undercut the base in order for it to stand straight and solid, gave it a sanding and polish and… Hey Presto!

Page 7: for March · Michell Farnill, Andrew Forsyth, Richard Helm, Lionel Hirning, Simon Hunter, Gary Klopfer, Peter Lun, June McKimmie, Matthew Parish, Takami Sawauchi, Meg Webster and

Meg’s tips:

• Always work from a drawing.

• Remember to rotate the job by hand

before turning on the lathe to ensure

enough clearance.

• Always switch off the lathe before

adjusting the tool rest.

• Look at the back of the cylinder as its

spinning.

• Always move tool rest away when

sanding.

• Expect to have and overcome

Whoopsies!

In summary, a great demonstration by Meg which was enjoyed by all and even involved a bit of audience participation!

Thank You Jonathan Rabinovitz for the S & T description and photos.
