leaf : petal mobilefor flute, clarinet & piano
for esther lamneck
- & -
for the sterling trio
notes
the piece is intended to highlight the inherently social nature of chamber music, & to explore ideas of flexbile/open form, allowing for the creation of an experience which can alter each time the piece is rehearsed &
performed.
the social aspect is defined by the improvisational nature of the piece, but even more so by the working approaches required of the trio to explore & perform these improvisational elements in good faith, & also in the
process of selecting & forming each performed version of the piece as a whole.
the format allows the trio to design a work of extremely flexible duration, comprised as it is of several sections, some of which last only a few seconds, some of which are through composed & relatively substantial, &
some of which are themselves of an open & flexible nature.
this further allows for flexible presentations of the work – for example concert & installation formats, where a concert presentation might range from a few minutes to 20mins or more, & an installation version might
last a whole afternoon; much of the work could also be adapted or its ideas explored as part of educational or other outreach work.
the work can be presented in a conventional physical manner, but the performers are also free to explore spatialisation of the piece, either as a whole or different arrangements for different sections – the latter may not
always be practicable for more limited concert durations, but could work very well in installation formats for example.
finally, although designed for flute, clarinet & piano, it is permissible where a specific movement might invite it to explore wider instrumental doublings – picc or bass flute, Eb or bass clarinet, harpsichord or toy
piano, etc.
for all enquires about the piece, please contact the composer at:

piano
note: the pianist may repeat each cell as many times as seems
appropriate, the minimum being 3 times each; the piano is always p or
mp.
the flautist & clarinetist improvise melodies over the piano cells using
the lines given (duration, rhythm & dynamic are free, although the
mood should be elegaic or narrational, and the dynamic never more than
mf).
the clarinetist may use Eb or bass clarinets, and may play the lines as
written or transposed; the flautist should use piccolo, and may also use
bass flute where available.
plenty of space should be given for the piano cells without any melody

notes may be played in any order, with duration defined by a single breath; it is not necessary to play all the pitches, & it is not necessary to play all the time; dynamic should be as quiet as possible; pitches may be inflected microtonally up or down – this may be to transpose the entire note, or a tiny gliss.
the cells may be played in any order; they can be played & repeated as printed; additionally, short extracts can be played form the longer cells, & the shorter cells may be spliced together to make longer ones.

these single events may be interspersed at any point, either between formations of
lines, or mid line, or at any other time. high notes should never be above mp or a
subtle mf.

score-flower instructions: there are 2 separate score 'flowers', each with 3 'petals', 1 petal per instrument; the harmonies are designed to work both separated into their individual flowers, or
mixed together – i.e. notes from the left flower can be played with notes form the right flower; in general, all flower notes are long in duration, and may vary from pppp to mp, either as
single dynamics or moving between any point between those parameters; notes in dashed ellipses are 'drop-ins' – they maybe played as above, or with staccati/accents/tenuti;notes will
generally overlap, but it's fine for instruments to sound together; all 3 players do not need to be playing continuously – solo/duo moments as welcome, as is silence.
