ing up to the 7 p.m. kickoff.“We were a bunch of small
town, farm kids that came to-gether and did somethingpretty special,” said KarlZeller, the starting fullback.“We didn’t have any big starsbut we had a lot of tough, hard-nosed guys that played togeth-er as a team.”
Road to perfectionEvery high school football
team has visions of champi-onships when preseason train-ing camp rolls around.
The 1960 Terriers were nodifferent.
Pinkerton had just such a vi-sion. But his was played out onthe gridiron during a preseasonscrimmage against Phillips-burg.
“We went up to scrimmagethem because (assistant) coach(Art) Hawk was from P’burgand we were running the ballall over them,” Pinkerton said.“We stopped them on defenseand we moved the ball up anddown the field. We came out ofthat feeling like we might havesomething special here.”
That season, the Terriersdominated the competition, outscoring opponents 238-39.
Del Val kicked off the sched-ule with a pair of lopsided winsover Washington Township
(38-7) and Manville (27-0), set-ting up back-to-back show-downs with Belvidere and Flo-rence.
Webb’s squad was up to thechallenge, using a 22-yardfourth-quarter touchdown passfrom Pinkerton to Bill McCreato beat the County Seaters 13-6.
A week later, defensive endMike Hartpence recovered ablocked punt in the end zone togive Del Val a tight 14-7 victoryover Florence. The Terriersplowed through the next fourgames with blowout wins overHunterdon Central (28-7),North Hunterdon (28-6),Dunellen (32-0) and UpperFreehold (39-0).
All that stood in the way ofperfection was the season finaleagainst South Hunterdon onThanksgiving Day. Zeller’s twofourth-quarter TD runs brokeopen a one-point game and pro-pelled the Terriers to a 21-6 vic-tory, securing the only unbeat-en season in school history.
Parental guidanceCoaching success is often
measured by wins and losses. But in some cases, success goesbeyond the numbers.
Webb’s coaching record wasa modest 54-48-4 but he re-mains the only coach in Del Valhistory to produce an undefeat-ed season and lead his team toa state championship.
“Coach Webb was kind ofthe quiet leader,” halfback JimDay said. “He knew what to say
to get us fired up but he was thequiet one. He was a fatherly fig-ure.”
“(Webb) had this saying,‘When the going gets tough, thetough get tougher,’” Pinkertonsaid. “I’ve heard it said in dif-ferent ways but that alwaysstuck with me. He always knewwhat to say.”
It’s no wonder the surfacethe Terriers currently play atthe facility named Tap WebbField.
Cream of the cropZeller was one of five all-
state performers on the 1960team that included junior DaveBrown and seniors John Evans,McCrea and Day.
Brown, a standout two-waytackle, and Evans — a guard —opened holes for a potent stableof running backs that churnedout 209 yards a game on theground. Halfbacks Don Kinneyand Day got most of the carriesbut Zeller was by no means lim-ited to a blocking back.
While Day and Kinney werebreaking off long, highlight-reelruns, Zeller was counted on toget the tough yards on goal-lineshort-yardage situations. Mc-Crea played tight end and de-fensive end and was the fa-vorite target of quarterbacksPinkerton and Kent Willever inthe passing game.
McCrea also returned twointerceptions for TDs and re-covering a pair of blocked puntsin the end zone for scores.
The five were also named tothe All-Hunterdon Countyteam along with Joe Roetheland Kinney.
Defense wins titlesOutscoring opponents by
nearly 200 points is a testa-ment to a powerful offensebut it was the defense thatstood out for this team.
“They say defense winschampionships,” Pinkertonsaid. “That’s what was signif-icant for me. There weretimes that we gave up yardsbut we just didn’t let teamsscore on us.”
In fact, the Terriers scoredeight defensive touchdownswhile only allowing opposingoffenses into the end zone six
times. The Terriers’ ‘D’pitched three shutouts andno team could muster morethan one touchdown in anygame.
Football or familyUndefeated seasons don’t
come without sacrifices. Justask Pinkerton.
Pinkerton won the startingquarterback job in preseasoncamp and led the Terriers tofour wins to start the season. He was stripped of the jobwhen he chose to attend his
sister’s wedding the day ofthe Hunterdon Central game.
The coaching staff gave thePinkerton an ultimatum –football or family. The seniorchose family and Willeverwas named starter for the re-mainder of the season.
Pinkerton would start theseason finale when Willeverwent down with an injury.
“I’m just glad I lost my jobbecause I missed a game andnot because I was a lousyquarterback,” Pinkerton said.

tape of last Saturday’s Pen Ar-gyl-Wilson game backward, you will hear a voice — whichsounds remarkably similar toReduzzi’s — saying in a mono-tone (you have to listen close-ly), “TURN BACK! TURNBACK! THE UNKNOWNSCRIBE IS DEAD! TURNBACK!”
You’ll hear it right after aDylan Evans’ 6-yard run offright tackle early in the secondquarter. The whole thing start-ed creeping me out a bit, but Iregained my senses after Ionce again burned my maca-roni and cheese radio dinnerin my tent that evening.
I lost my television set inthe move out to VoorheesState Park last spring, so I’mno longer eligible for TV din-ners.
Anyway, enough of thismindless psychobabble. I’vesharpened my crayons and pa-pa’s got a brand new bag. Solet’s talk football:Friday’s games
Whitehall at Easton —Two 4-0 teams makes this adefinite four-bagger in termsof viewing pleasure. But it’llbe … Easton 21-10.
Central Catholic at
Nazareth — Unbeaten Vikingsdon’t play Easton, which is ashame because that matchupwould be the marquee gamein the LVC this season. Bren-dan Nosovitch is a treat towatch. Central Catholic 28-14.
Freedom at Dieruff —Breather week for Freedombut the sledding gets decided-ly tougher after this. Freedom41-7.
Bethlehem Catholic at Em-maus — This rates as a three-bagger on the UnknownScribe meter with both teamsbattling, if not for the LVC ti-tle, at least for a spot in theirrespective District 11 playofffields. Emmaus 28-17.
Parkland at Liberty —Both programs have lost a lit-tle luster in the past twoweeks. I like Liberty’s youthand overall speed but you stillhave to like … Parkland 25-15.
Allen at Northampton —Northampton still looking forits first win in the LVC. Here’ssaying the Konkrete Kids willfind it. Northampton 31-7.
Wilson at Bangor — This isthe night when Bangor’s facili-ty is officially unveiled as PaulFarnan Field at BangorMemorial Park. Scott LaValvawon’t play for the secondstraight week but the Slaterswill win one for the old ballcoach. Bangor 20-14.
Saucon Valley at Cata-sauqua — Panthers’ 0-4 startmakes them most puzzling
team in Express-Times region. This is my upset special.Saucon Valley 14-13.
Notre Dame at Northwest-ern — Notre Dame seems tohave found a gem in quarter-back Kyree Bowles, but theCrusaders will still have towait to break their 32-gamelosing streak. Northwestern28-12.
Palmerton at Palisades —Pirates still looking for theirfirst win while Palmerton is
coming off a shootout victoryover Saucon Valley. At leastthe Bombers can score points.Palmerton 27-7.
Pen Argyl at SouthernLehigh — This looked like adefinite four-bag matchup un-til Southern Lehigh’s upsetloss to Northwestern lastweek. It still rates three bags, though. Pen Argyl 21-12.
Ridge at Phillipsburg —Ridge was P’burg’s opponentin last season’s North 2 Group
4 sectional final in a game con-tested during a snowstorm atKean University. The weatherwill be better but the resultwon’t change. Phillipsburg 26-14.
Voorhees at Delaware Val-ley — Del Val looks like ateam on the make. Besides, if Idon’t pick the Terriers, friendsof head coach Mike Columbotell me he’ll be looking for me.Delaware Valley 41-6.
North Hunterdon atBridgewater — Bridgewatermade quick work of Hunter-don Central and is establishingitself as the best team in Som-erset County. Lions will havetough task. Bridgewater 24-16.
Pingry at North Warren —Patriot mania is running wildin Blairstown area. NorthWarren 3-0 and has a shot tomake it four in a row, whichwould be program’s best startin its 36-year history. NorthWarren 14-13.
Linden at Warren Hills —Might be the Blue Streaks’ onefinal chance at a win. I saythey pull it off. Warren Hills 7-6.
Belvidere at Manville —County Seaters continue to flyunder radar. They’re 3-0 andafter Friday they’ll be 4-0.Belvidere 31-9.
Madison at Hackettstown— Hackettstown is 1-2 but hasheld its own in every game.Nicest thing about the Hack-ettstown road trip is that stop
at nearby Hot Dog Johnny’s.Madison 17-14.Saturday’s games
Bucktail at Pius X — Roy-als came through for me lastweek, so the least I can do isride once more with my boys.Plus, Bucktail is coming off a16-6 loss to Columbia Mon-tour. Pius X 21-20.
Harvard at Lafayette —Harvard was picked to winthe Ivy League. But that plus$2.99 will get you an order ofcheese fries at Detzi’s Tavernin Wind Gap. Lafayette 16-14.
Moravian at Dickinson —Greyhounds coming off big-time clunker last week againstJohns Hopkins. Moving theball has been a major problem.Dickinson 17-3.
East Stroudsburg atBloomsburg — This is an in-teresting rivalry game withboth rosters dotted withscores of region players. War-riors can score with anyonebut … Bloomsburg 38-31.
Penn State at Iowa — Themarch of the YoungstownStates has come to a screech-ing halt. The Nittany Lionsdive into the Big Ten andHawkeyes have been playingPSU like a drum of late. Iowa24-14.
Tulane at Rutgers — Rut-gers QB Tom Savage is sup-posed to play in spite of apainful rib injury. Shouldn’t bea problem against GreenWave. Rutgers 34-14.
