alive, but to be well.” Marcus Valeria Martia
BFSWC Members are also enjoying the opportunity to
share their literary experiences at
the once-a-month Book Club Meeting
on the last Tuesday of each month.
During the meetings, participants
review a recommended fiction or
non-fiction book.
Two of the books previously reviewed were “The John Carlos
Story” by John Carlos and “The Intuitionist” by Colson
Whitehead. During the Book Club meeting on Tuesday, July
31st, the participants discussed the book “Growing Up and Out
of the South” by Mattie Johnson, (Above) a BFSWC member.
Book Club participants are looking forward to having lively,
informative discussions on future recommended books.
A Photography Class, an Environmental Art Class and the Book Club are the newest
additions to the monthly schedule of activities at the Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness
Center. These activities allow BFSWC members the opportunity for self-expression,
creativity and to gain knowledge.
Thanks to a grant provided by the ANC-1A and the volunteer
services of BFSWC in-house photographers Victor Merriwether and
Roland Gardner, the BFSWC members are learning how to take
great pictures. The first of two 8- week Photography Classes began
on Thursday, July 19th. The next session is scheduled to begin in
September.
During the sessions, participants will learn techniques for
making an image visually appealing. They will also learn about
the features of a digital camera and technical skills for downloading photographs to the
computer and attaching them to email. Participants will be given photo assignments that
will then be printed and critiqued.
The Environmental Art Class began on Monday,
July 16th. Under the direction of another volunteer, Ms.
Judy “Kyt” Williams, participants are completing inspiring
art projects using recycled materials.
Participants are enthusiastic about the many options
that they have to turn what may be “one person’s trash
into another person’s treasure. “ Each of them is oozing
with creativity and eager to share the results of their new
found skills.
Thanks to Kyt, (left)

The month of July 2012, birthed its first competitive basketball team. Welcome the Bernice Fonteneau Players. The team currently consists of five fabulous family members (pictured below) and a dynamite cheerleading squad. Please do not be dismayed if you think you have missed an opportunity to dunk. We are currently recruiting new members for the team and cheer leading squad. Our first game is scheduled for early October 2012. We will be matching dunking abilities against the Hattie Holmes team. The Bernice Fonteneau Players practice on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Parkview Recreation Center. On Tuesdays we train on site. If you are interested in joining the fun see Coach Parker. . Keep your schedule open to cheer the Bernice Fonteneau Players to victory during our Harvest Festival in October 2012.

August Calendar - Subject to Change
Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) interns, Irene
Paradas (l), a rising senior, and Iris Hernandez (r), a rising junior
at Woodrow Wilson Senior High School began their assignment
with the BFSWC on July 2, 2012. They have spent their time
assisting with various center health and fitness programs,
administrative tasks, and engaging members in games and
activities. They have been very helpful, courteous, and reliable.
After becoming quite aware of the general routines around the
center, they have taken the initiative to step in and do what
was needed without having to be asked. When the program
ends on August 2nd, we won’t be saying goodbye because Irene
and Iris are participants in Mary Center’s Teen Program. So
until we see them again, we hope that they continue to be
successful in all of their endeavors….especially in their
schoolwork!
