Folens School At Home: 1 st and 2 nd Class Weekly Plan: Week 3 Introduction The purpose of Folens School at Home is to help parents support their child’s learning at home. Shortly after schools closed, we at Folens made all of our resources available for parents to use on FolensOnline. However, we understand that parents may not feel they have the time or expertise to pick and choose the most suitable activities for their child across multiple subjects. So, we turned to some experienced primary school teachers and asked them to put together a weekly plan for parents to use at home with their child. The purpose of the plan is to identify age-appropriate resources that can be used to help children learn and to provide some guidance to parents when using them. Each week, we will publish a new plan and accompanying digital resources for each of the three core subjects, English, Irish and Maths, as well SESE (History, Geography and Science). *We at Folens appreciate that these are challenging times for everyone and that many parents will have a limited amount of time to support their child’s learning. There is no pressure to complete every activity in the weekly plan – it can simply be used as a menu from which parents can pick and choose. Accessing the digital resources The digital resources can all be accessed from FolensOnline. For ease of use, we have included a link to each resource in the plan just below the thumbnail image of the resource. NB: In order to launch each resource, you will need to a) be logged into FolensOnline and b) copy and paste the link from the plan into your browser. Registering with FolensOnline In order to login to FolensOnline you need to register. To do this: 1. Go to www.folensonline.ie and click ‘Register’ 2. Select ‘Teacher’ 3. https://content.folensonline.ie/programmes/SoundsMakeWords/2nd_Class/resources/games/SMW_02_GAME_006/index.html

The objective of this lesson is for your child to recognise that some words contain a silent t that is not spoken. They should also begin to understand that some words are spelled differently from how they are pronounced. Print the worksheet (English: Activity 2 (Silent letters: t)) at the end of this document. Read the ‘silent t’ words with your child. Encourage your child to tick the correct word to match the pictures. Now launch the silent letters: word identification game on Folensonline. Play the game to practise the silent letter words with your child.

Maths Activity 1: Number, 100 Square

https://content.folensonline.ie/programmes/PlanetMaths/PM2/resources/activitya/pm_2c_017/index.html

Launch the activity Number Squares on Folensonline to warm up before this week’s maths lesson. Play the game with your child. Next, look at the 100 square (this is included in the worksheet at the end of this document). Ask your child questions about the hundred square, e.g: - Show me a number with 7 units - Show me a number with 3 tens - Show me an odd number higher than 50 - Show me an even number lower than 20 - What is 10 more than 59? - What is 20 less than 68? Choose a number. Write it down and hide it from your child. Have your child ask you yes or no questions to find out what number it is, e.g.

• Is it higher than 50?

• Is it odd or even?

• If I add 5, will I get 20? etc.

Activity 2: Money

The objective here is for your child to recognise, exchange and use coins up to the value of 50c (1st class) and €2 (2nd class). Gather a selection of coins. Ask your child to sort them in different ways (e.g. by colour, by size, by value). Ask your child to order the coins from the least value to the highest value. Now Launch and play the digital warm up activity for this lesson on Folensonline. Once your child is confident in recognising the coins, call out different amounts and ask them to place coins on the table to that value. Next, ask your child to close their eyes and place some coins on the table. Ask your child to open their eyes and count how much is there. Encourage them to start with the biggest coin first.
