On the wall in my office hangs a poster stating the complete St. Pius X Catholic High School Mission Statement. e complete statement has four sections: Mission Statement, Vision Statement, Our Values and Positive Statements. Over the course of the last six years, I have quoted various portions of this body of work in my letters to you. As I write my final letter to you as Director of Alumni, I find myself compelled to share with you the final component: the Positive Statements.

We believe that each person is called to a deeper relationship with God and to the transformation of society. We believe that service to others is a response to human need either by direct sharing of spiritual and material resources or by developing skills needed to achieving a just society. We believe that each person has unique worth and gifts. We believe that each person is called to use his or her gifts to serve the common good.We believe that each person is responsible and accountable, personally and publicly. We believe that teachers create an educational environment that nurtures each person’s independent pursuit of education and development.

I want to thank everyone for their kind and generous support during my tenure as Director of Alumni. To every volunteer, colleague and parent I had the good fortune to interact with, know that you are appreciated and I will never forget you. To all the wonderful alumni who answered my call and said yes to serving on the Alumni Board, you hold a special place in my heart. To all the alumni supporters who shared their gifts unceasingly, sponsoring Alumni Scholarship Fund events and giving to the Annual Fund, your invest-ment dividends are manifested in the success of our students. It was an honor to serve you.

I hope that I was during this brief period, and will continue to be in my next venture, a positive statement of the type of citizens St. Pius X Catholic High School nurtures and sends forth into the world. Your sister in Christ - Vicky

Spotlight - e Bickes

St. Pius X Catholic High School Alumni News • Fall 2014

ree years ago, at the graduation of the Class of 2011, our 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award Winners, Tom ’74 and May May ’75 Bickes watched their only son, TJ, walk across the Atlanta Symphony Hall Stage to receive his diploma from Archbishop Gregory. On that day they probably never imag-ined they would one day be sitting on the same stage to receive the highest honor given to St. Pius X Catholic High School alumni. But the Development Office had imagined it, and knew it would happen because the Bickes are very special St. Pius X graduates.

When we asked a few of their friends to share with us one word that would best describe the couple, none of them were able to send me just one. None…of….them!!! Advisory Board President Mike Petrik sent the word Devoted with four statements referencing God, family, the church and St. Pius X. eir good friend and fellow alumni parent Kathie Lyons, came and sat down in my office and said “Vic, I got this broken down into FOUR categories!” In the Fun category were the words Energizer Bunny, May May’s own favorite description of her husband’s zeal for life.

at zeal helped Tom build EmployBridge, a leading provider of specialty staffing services focused on the transportation, logistics, and specialty manufacturing industries. Employ-Bridge is a $965 million firm operating in 41 states with 240 locations. Under Tom’s guidance as CEO, EmployBridge has grown more than four fold since its inception in the year 2000.

May May and Tom’s vibrant & dynamic family life center around their 35 year marriage that produced four St. Pius alumni and two grandchildren. Tom has served 11 years on the finance council at St. Brigid’s parish and serves on the St. Pius Advisory board. Together they founded the “Adopt A Family Program” in conjunction with Catholic Charities serving over 1000 needy families in the greater Atlanta area. e benevolent donation of the Bickes’ time, talent and treasure to St. Pius cannot be described in one word or be done justice with this introduction.

Athletic Director Mark Kelly, who we all know is NOT a one word man, called and instructed me to say this about the couple…. You cannot walk away from a conversation with Tom & May May Bickes and not feel good about yourself and about life.

e St. Pius X Alumni Association was proud to award the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award to Tom and May May Bickes in recognition of their open hearts and selfless dedica-tion to living out the ideals and values of St. Pius X Catholic High School in their professional achievement, commitment to our community, concern for young people, and overall pursuit of excellence.

Thomas Bickes is currently Chief Executive Officer of EmployBridge, a leading provider of specialty staffing services focused on the transportation, logistics, and specialty manufacturing industries. EmployBridge is a $965 million specialty staffing firm operating in 41 states with 240 locations. Currently they service over 4500 clients and pay approximately, 35,000 temporaries weekly.

Mr. Bickes has over 32 years of experience in the staffing industry. During his tenure in staffing he has held senior management positions in the Healthcare, IT, Accounting and Finance, and commer-cial sectors. He has either led or been actively involved in acquisitions, sales and recapitalizations of several businesses. EmployBridge has grown more than four fold since it’s inception in 2000.

May May and Tom reside in Atlanta, Georgia, married for 35 years with four children and two grandchildren. May May graduated from St. Pius in 1975 and went on to get a degree in Childhood education from DeKalb College. Tom graduated from St. Pius High School in 1974 and went on to graduate from University of Georgia with a BS in Accounting in 1978. He is actively involved in his community where he served 11 years on the finance council at St. Brigid parish, serves on the St. Pius Advisory board and he and May May started 28 years ago the “Adopt A Family Program” in conjunc-tion with Catholic Charities where they serve over 1000 needy families in the greater Atlanta area.

When I received the call from Vicky and was told we had been selected as the distinguished alumni I was very surprised and asked her to make sure she had dialed the right number. As surprised as I was, I could not help thinking about how surprised my teachers and classmates of from St Pius would be. is year I celebrate my 40 year reunion and May May will celebrate her 40th next year. But our love and roots to St. Pius have only grown.

Our four years at St. Pius started and ended with the famous Rat day, involved PiHi football games, basketball games at St. Joes (our home court in those days), the first soccer team at St. Pius, lifelong friends and fun …. and of course a great education. Over the past 50 years the Bickes and Bindewald family has been blessed to have 27 people attend this great institution. Four of those 27 were our four kids … Jessica ‘99, Mandi ‘04, TJ ‘11, and Anne Caroline ‘13. Over those years the buildings and infrastructure has changed but what makes St. Pius great has not.

For May May and I, this is such an honor and responsibility to speak to the young men and women who represent the graduating class of 2014. You are all about to enter a new chapter in your life. Your journey to college and your new found independence will be one of excitement, one of uncertainty, a little scary, and a lot of fun. We are both envi-ous and excited for you.

ere are many lessons you can take from your four years at St Pius that will help you on this journey and I would specif-ically like to mention 5 important ones - sacrifice, friend-ships, mentors, morals, and community.

SacriceI hope you realize and appreciate the sacrifice your parents have made to give you this quality private education at the best Catholic high school in the country. at sacrifice is grounded in their love for you and their faith. You can show your respect and appreciation for this sacrifice by doing well in college and making good decisions in this more indepen-dent world.

FriendshipsOur years at St. Pius resulted in friends for life. I suspect your four years will do the same. I encourage you that even though college paths may be different, make the efforts to keep these friends close. As you get older friendships grow in importance. Great friends are always there for you in good times and bad.

MentorsI believe St. Pius has the most committed and caring faculty of any high school I know. I suspect most of you have certain faculty members that have made a difference for you in your 4 years at St Pius. ink of them as mentors. Men-tors are important in everyone’s life. I have many mentors in my life and three important ones from my experience at St. Pius. First, Coach Maloof who taught me anything is possi-ble with hard work and a strong heart. Second Monsignor Lopez, who in his special way, taught me as he has many others the importance of a life that is grounded in faith. And finally Steve Spellman who has taught me through his actions the importance of humility, respect, and truly caring about others.

MoralsSt. Pius is based on the health of mind, spirit, and body. Not only have you received a great education you have had the opportunity to develop both morally and spiritually. We have always told our children that life is about the decisions you make. When in doubt, I have some advice for you, ask yourself one question - what decision or choice would Mon-signor Lopez make?

CommunityI will be celebrating my 40th high school reunion this fall. While many things have changed over those years one thing has remained constant. e St. Pius community of students, faculty, alumni, and parents is the best I have ever encoun-tered. It is a community you will forever be a part of. Don’t be a stranger, stay involved, I assure you there is much more to learn from St. Pius and much more to receive.

Congratulations class of 2014… wherever your future takes you we wish you the best. Have fun, do well, and make good decisions.

Brisbane Retirement Well Wishes

St. Pius X Catholic High School Alumni News • Fall 2014

ings are a little different in the Math department these days. Last Spring beloved math teacher Mr. Gene Brisbane retired after 49 years of teaching.

Principal Steve Spellman said, “Gene Brisbane is the epitome of the Catholic educator. He has served God, his family and Catholic education for 49 years. It is a well-deserved retirement.”

Brisbane earned the first-ever Teacher of the Year award at St. Pius X. roughout his career, he was also selected as a STAR teacher seven times. In addition, Brisbane served as the chair of the math department for 11 years, moderator of the Math Club and just completed his 14th consecutive year as faculty representative of the Home & School Association. Over his lengthy career of both coach-ing and teaching, he has touched the lives of an estimated 11,000 students.

During his time at St. Pius X Brisbane witnessed many changes. He was the last teacher to replace his chalkboards with the dry erase boards now used in classrooms. He also did not rely on textbooks, preferring instead to rewrite problem sets for his students. e school dedicated his classroom in his honor for his years of service at a retirement celebra-tion on May 21.

A true math teacher at heart, at the retirement luncheon in his honor Brisbane said,

“Someone asked me why I didn’t go one more year for 50? But for a math teacher 49 is irresistible because it’s a perfect square.”

e future of the school and its students depends on Alumni support and we need help from everyone. We welcome friends and family to come support the students at the many events at St. Pius X. If you have not been back recently, there have been numerous changes to our school and we encourage you to visit. You will like what you see.

I would like to take the time to personally thank Vicky Dorsey for her six years of service to St. Pius X. We have become a stronger program because of her dedicated leadership. While she is no longer Alumni Director, she will have some involvement with the board. Vicky is enjoying her new job as Director of Alumni and Corporate Engagement at the College of Family and Consumer Science at the University of Georgia.

I am excited to welcome and begin working with Karoline Brennan ’82 as she assumes the Director of Alumni position. ere are many fun events planned again this year. We are working hard to make these the best events yet and hope to see you at one (or all). You are always welcomed back home.

Go Lions!

e Maloof Classic

St. Pius X Catholic High School Alumni News • Fall 2014

On Monday, April 28 alumni, parents, and friends of St. Pius X gathered for the 20th Anniversary of the George B. Maloof Golf & Tennis Classic. Golfers and volun-teers came together to celebrate sport, friends, and St. Pius X Catholic High School. is year the weather forecast cooperated, enabling us to complete both the golf and tennis events on the same day!

e first alumni association golf event was held at River Pines Golf Club on May 22, 1995. Since that time we have held our event at many different venues. Something special happens when St. Pius X Catholic High School alumni gather together. When we come together to fellowship, the Holy Spirit is definitely present in our midst! is essence is what draws; players, volunteers and sponsors back year after year to the event!

Once again we were blessed to have wonderful major sponsors: ADCAP Network Systems and Ace Plastics, Inc. eir support helps keep the Alumni Scholarship Fund endowed. e tournament is produced by the

Alumni Feature - Michael Trujillo ’01

St. Pius X Catholic High School Alumni News • Fall 2014

When Michael Trujillo ‘01 took a job with Catholic Charities Atlanta as a Communications Specialist in 2009, little did he know that God had big plans for him to foster the Catholic Relief Service motto - Faith, Action, Results - on an international scale. Michael’s initial position was to support local parishes and social justice ministries for Catholic Charities. rough his job, he created and executed a communi-cations strategy and conducted numerous workshops and trainings leading Catholics to take more active roles in their community. One of those actions was a postcard campaign with parishes, high schools and organizations, where 40,000 postcards were sent to Congress about comprehensive immigration reform. After an extremely successful year and a half, Michael took a job with Catholic Relief Services (known around the globe as CRS), the official international humanitarian relief aid and development agency of the Catholic community in the United States.

As the Communications Relationship Manager for the Southeastern Region of the United States, Michael has developed and executed a communica-tions strategy for a nine state region resulting in a 400% increase in media hits since he started. He man-ages relationships in AL, GA and TN promoting participation among Church leaders and volunteers on issues of charity, justice and civic responsibility.

16

Traveling the World with CRSMichael Trujillo ’01

Michael has served as one of the key people in devel-oping a new strategic direction for the agency and as a Global Brand Management Implementer.

Since 2010, it’s hard to catch up with Michael in Atlanta. A third of his time is spent traveling for work and in his spare time he enjoys traveling for fun. In 2011, Michael led a delegation to West Africa to view the work of the Church in Burkina Faso and Mali. e group saw water and agricultural projects that transformed communities as well as a center for teen-age girls fleeing forced marriage and a center for women who were banished from their community after being wrongfully accused of witchcraft. is year, Michael led a delegation to the Philippines to view the relief efforts from the recent typhoon. “Viewing the destruction on TV is powerful, but viewing the destruction in person is life-changing. It is my hope that I can not only led others to be proud to call themselves Catholic, but also to help them to listen to their Gospel call to help their brothers and sisters across the globe ,” said Michael.

While on the road, Michael has been able to reunite with St. Pius X alumni in his journey to visit all 30 of the Major League Baseball stadiums and has only 10 stadiums left. While in Atlanta, Michael has lent his talents to St. Pius X as our Trivia host dressing up as

Hulk Hogan, Richard Simmons, Pee Wee Herman and Ricky Ricardo. During this fun night, partici-pants have enjoyed the very untraditional trivia night you normally see at restaurants and added his own spin to it with movie clips, sound bites, and the ever popular taste test round with various types of soda, candy and chips.

Michael has forever been changed by his interna-tional experiences, but he credits his passion to help others to the example his parents (who recently celebrated 50 years of marriage), grandparents and siblings as well as his Catholic school upbringing at Christ the King and St. Pius X.

Lopez Sabbatical Well Wishes

18

As you recall your four years at St. Pius X, many of you have fond memories of Msgr. Richard Lopez. For 33 years, he has been a constant presence serving our school and supporting numerous generations of our community with his extraordinary teaching ability, his prayers, daily Masses, marriages, baptisms and funerals, among other things.

It is now our turn to give back to this gentle man with our prayers and support as he takes a sabbatical for the 2014-15 school year to care for his family. Msgr. Lopez has cared for us, prayed for us and brought each of us closer to God. We hope to continue his good work and make him proud of his St. Pius X family this year. We look forward to his return in 2015-16.

St. Pius X Catholic High School Alumni News • Fall 2014

We are sad to say goodbye to Alumni Relations Director Vicky Dorsey ‘81 as she moves to her college alma mater, the University of Georgia and takes a position as the Director of Alumni and Corporate Engagement. I am excited to report that we have hired Karoline Rumps Brennan ’82, who will begin in early September. I am confident that she will work hard to continue the growth of the alumni program and all that Vicky helped put into place.

As Reunion Weekend approaches, I hope you think back fondly to your years at St. Pius X and take the opportunity to return to campus to see the changes that have taken place in recent years. We welcome our alumni community with open arms!

How long has it been since you have been back to campus? Please join us for these upcoming events: • Show your Golden Lion Pride and support one of our many championship athletic teams

(who won 11 state and runner-up titles last year!) • Bring your family for an upcoming performance of the Pius Players. Bonnie Spark and her

dedicated actors are always a treat! • Participate or volunteer at some of our upcoming alumni events (class reunions, homecom-

ing, the annual alumni flag football game Wednesday Night Lights and many others).

Your connection to St. Pius X is also represented by your continued generosity to the Annual Fund. Our alumni supporters have recognized the impact that this school had on them and are committed to making the difference in educating the next generation at St. Pius X. ank for your many years of Annual Fund support.

I hope to see you this year on campus as we head into another great school year.

Dear Alumni,

As I write this St. Pius X is opening its doors again for another school year. ere have been so many changes since the doors opened in 1958 in every area of life; from the physical campus, to teaching styles, to technology, and even to the student uniforms. While every class that has graduated has brought its own unique contributions to the St. Pius X experience, the one thing you all have in common is your identification as a proud graduate of St. Pius. All of you are deeply connected by your experiences here whether you are from the Class of 1959 or the recent graduates of 2014.

students in how they treat one another and how supportive they are of each other. Our Works of Mercy program reaches new levels of engagement each year by allowing the students to select the areas of Metro-At-lanta they would like to contribute to, thus adding meaning and a sense of accomplishment in our volunteer efforts. Locally, our relationship with Dresden Elementary has been invaluable as we flood it with our volun-teers and provide them with resources they would otherwise not be able to procure. Our mission trips-we had four last year-were all completely filled, with a waiting list for each trip which is an outward sign of the willingness to joyfully assist others by our students.

Academically, the past few years has produced amazing results with record-setting SAT, ACT and Advanced Placement numbers. ose results also include 55 students being named National A.P. Scholars granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

Our Fine Arts continue to flourish with amazing displays of our talented students in each of the fine arts areas, a joy for all that enjoy these events. Athletically, our school was once again recognized by MaxPrep sports as the 2nd best high school program in the United States last year, and for the second year in a row, the Number 1 Catholic High School. What a validation of the gifts and work ethic of our young women and men, and the coaches who lead them to such lofty accomplishments.

Yes, we are having banner years, but again, knowing that we must continually improve to remain competi-tive, we now we must calibrate our focus on this year and the promise of even greater accomplishments.

Yes, we can avoid headlines like above, but it takes a commitment on the part of everyone to this school that will allow us to continue to provide this school currently, and in the future, with a vibrant future. ank you to each Alumnus that supports us in our mission of continuous improvement. We appreciate your support, and more importantly, your prayers that we continue to work to make you proud of your Alma Mater.

St. Pius X Catholic High School to close! Tentative date set for June 30, 2018

Wouldn’t that be a shocking headline? Impossible you say? But as one reads the national headlines concerning many of our Catholic school colleagues, it is an event that is happening more and more. Knowing that we can never take anything for granted, please know that we are working hard every day to live the Annual Fund theme: Founded in Faith, Joined as Family, Focused on Futures.

To date, I am very pleased with where your Alma Mater is positioned. We are coming off several of the finest years in the history of the school with verifiable accomplishments in every area of school life. Our Catholicity is reflected throughout the school by the day-to-day relationships of every one of our

Warmest regards,

Steve Spellman Principal

From the Athletic Director

St. Pius X Catholic High School Alumni News • Fall 2014

is past summer as I was reflecting on the great year the Golden Lions had in 2013 - 2014, I was struck by the phenomenal year a number of our individual student-athletes had. Anyone who knows me knows that

So Great in Every Way

I am sure you get my point as to how good they were. at, however, is not the subject of this article. If you talk to any teacher at St. Pius X you will hear exactly the same words to describe each of these student-ath-letes: humble, gracious, caring, unselfish, and hard worker. Had you walked into our cafeteria last year and sat down with any of these individuals, you would have come away saying, “What a nice kid.” You likely would have had no idea about their exploits.

Melissa Page taught Gunnar English last year. She said she did not even know he swam until one of the other kids in her class told her. (I repeat – he broke Michael Phelps’ record!) Math teacher Katie Stilson‘00 talked about how when one of Gunnar’s school records was broken by team mate Basil Orr’14, Gunnar was right there, at the edge of the pool, waiting to congratulate him.

When I talked to English teacher Lindsay Dent about Asia she said that whenever she would say something to Asia about her accomplishments, “Asia would always blush and immediately talk about her team-mates and always, always, say ank you.” Boys

Basketball Coach Aaron Parr ‘06 and English teacher Carrie Stockard both talked about how Asia took care of her brother, TJ ’16, when he encountered serious medical problems. She was often seen sitting with him in the cafeteria, helping him with his homework. She was always there for him.

In regards to Daniel, Spanish teacher Jennifer Bafun-do '00 talked about “how hard he worked and how positive he was with his classmates.” Melissa Page talked about how mature and focused Daniel had become as he went through St. Pius X.

When talking about Austin, Science teacher Melissa Beam’88 talked about “how hard he worked and how he would always come by for extra help.” She also talked about “how nice he was to his classmates.” Dennis Ruggiero could not stop talking about Austin’s humility.

Fred Dorsey was a Student Ambassador and at the end of the year he was honored with the Archbishop’s award. is is given to the student who in the judg-ment of their teachers “best portrays the Christian values of St. Pius X.” Charleen Klister said this about Fred. “Fred’s characteristic humility, sense of apprecia-tion, and brotherly caring for others made his presence a blessing in every class.”

So what is my point? My point is that we at St. Pius X, in conjunction with the wonderful families we have, strive to develop the whole child. In these five individ-uals we have students who truly represent the best of what we strive for. All five, shared with us, an inner goodness that transcended their talents. I thank them. I thank their parents. I thank their teachers and coach-es. e best thing is that at St. Pius X, we have a lot of kids you could say the same about. What a great place! Domini sumus. “We are the Lord’s.”

See you at the games.

Mark Kelly ’70

Gunnar Bentz ’14 All-American, State Swimmer of the Year, National Champion in the 400IM (Breaking Michael Phelps’ record!), led his team to the State Championship

Fred Dorsey ’14 MVP of the State Track Meet, 10th in the nation in the

long jump, 27th in the nation in the triple jump, led his team to the State Championship

Asia Durr ’15 Gatorade State Basketball Player of the Year, AJC Player of the Year, U.S. National Team, #1 Recruit in the nation,

led her team to the State Championship

Daniel Haugh ’14 4-Time All-American, 4 individual State titles, 2nd in the nation in the Discus, 2nd in the nation in the Hammer

Throw, led his team to the State Championship

I am all about “Team.” I generally don’t talk much about individual performances. ese individuals, in regard to their performances, however, were extraordinary.
