  • Foreword

The FM Approvals certification mark is intended to verify that the products and services described will meet FM Approvals stated conditions of performance, safety and quality useful to the ends of property conservation. The purpose of Approval Standards is to present the criteria for FM Approval of various types of products and services, as guidance for FM Approvals personnel, manufacturers, users and authorities having jurisdiction.

Products submitted for certification by FM Approvals shall demonstrate that they meet the intent of the Approval Standard, and that quality control in manufacturing shall ensure a consistently uniform and reliable product. Approval Standards strive to be performance-oriented. They are intended to facilitate technological development.

For examining equipment, materials and services, Approval Standards:

    a) must be useful to the ends of property conservation by preventing, limiting or not

causing damage under the conditions stated by the Approval listing; and

    b) must be readily identifiable.

Continuance of Approval and listing depends on compliance with the Approval Agreement, satisfactory performance in the field, on successful re-examinations of equipment, materials, and services as appropriate, and on periodic follow-up audits of the manufacturing facility.

FM Approvals LLC reserves the right in its sole judgment to change or revise its standards, criteria, methods, or procedures.

  • I GENERALNozzles for 34 in. or 1 in. hose, covered in this standard, are for fire protection in occupancies susceptible tosurface fires in ordinary combustibles. The most common application is for extinguishment of lint fires in textileoccupancies.

FM Approval is based on examination and test of production samples, inspection of the manufacturing or qualitycontrol facilities, and satisfactory field experience. Particularly considered are functional suitability, adequacy ofdesign and workmanship, uniformity and dependability of production, effectiveness of quality control, andavailability of service and of replacement parts.

Minimum physical requirements given below are guides. Mere conformity does not assure approval since otherconsiderations may control. Nor is strict conformity necessary: nozzles having different characteristics may beconsidered and approved if shown to be equivalent or superior in performance.

II DESIGNThe nozzle shall be constructed of suitable corrosion resisting materials.

An exterior handle or control shall be provided to control the water discharge.

The weight of the nozzle shall not exceed 5 lb.

Nozzles shall be capable of withstanding a hydrostatic pressure of 500 psig for 5 minutes without distortion orsignificant leakage.

The control handle shall be of such construction that it may be moved at nozzle pressures up to 300 psig.

Nozzles capable of producing both spray and solid stream shall have the control arranged so that it is possibleto obtain the spray without going through the solid stream position.

Nozzles having water passages or orifices less than 18 in. wide shall be provided with a screen at the inlet. Thediameter of holes in the screen shall be less than the smallest dimension of the water passages. The aggregatearea of the holes in the screen shall be at least 10 times the total outlet area. The screen shall be placed so thatit may be easily cleaned.

  • III PERFORMANCE

    A. Nozzles Without Applicators

Nozzles of this type shall be capable of producing spray with a flat, circular or elliptical pattern. The spray shallbe reasonably uniform within the discharge pattern. There shall be no voids or sparse spots within the cone ofdischarge. The spray1 angle shall be not less than 45 nor more than 90 within the pressure range of 30 psigto 125 psig at the nozzle, when tested in still air.

The character of the spray shall be such that the pattern does not alter significantly within 8 ft of the nozzle tipwith 50 psig flowing pressure at the nozzle.

    B. Nozzles Using Applicators

Nozzles of this type shall be equipped with a light-weight applicator 4 ft to 6 ft in length. The discharge shallbe an effective spray in an uniform circular or elliptical pattern.

On a horizontal plane 4 ft below the vertical nozzle at least 90% of the total discharge shall cover a circular planewith diameter between 6 and 10 feet. The spray shall be of an uniform pattern.

    C. General

The nozzle may or may not have a solid stream position. If provided, the solid stream shall have a range of atleast 35 ft with 50 psig discharge pressure at the nozzle. This range shall be taken as the distance from the nozzletip to the midpoint of the area where the bulk of the water falls, measured in still air, with the nozzle tip held3 ft above grade and elevated 30 above the horizontal. There shall be little or no spray evident at the nozzleduring solid stream discharge.

Water draft in either the spray or solid stream position shall be between 2.5 gpm and 10 gpm with 50 psigdischarge pressure at the nozzle.

IV MARKINGThe following marking shall be stamped or embossed on the nozzle:

    A. Control positions off, spray and (optional) solid stream.B. Manufacturers name or trade name.C. Manufacturers model number.D. The FM Approval mark in accordance with FM Global Drawing TR-No. 52-2241 after formal

    Approval has been granted.

1 The effective spray angle is measured with a vertical nozzle discharging downward onto a horizontal plane 4 ft below. The angle is defined as theangle between the axis of the nozzle and a line from the nozzle tip to the circle on the horizontal plane containing 90% of the total nozzle discharge.
