Th fat man poco has been incorporated in the back-plate of the device, unlike comparable systems. Its capacity can be increased individually with plug-in co-processor modules and/or intelligent I/O modules. These have a direct, very fast bus connection to the main processor. The Saia® PCD3 series is therefore excellently prepared for the rapidly increasing demands on performance that are to be expected.

Total available user memory can practi-cally be divided at will  into sectors  for program, text and data blocks. This ena-bles the requirements of any particular application to be met in the best possible way. With the instructions available, data can be transferred under the other user media,  such  as  flags,  registers,  timers and counters. The following values are valid:

   1 register content (32 bit) occupies 4 bytes in the data block range and 8 bytes in the text range 

   1 text character occupies 1 byte 

   1 program line occupies 4 bytes

With  its  fast  COLDFIRE  processor,  expansion  to  1023  central  I/Os  and  large  memory  capacity,  the PCD3.Mxxx0 offer a powerful  controller platform  for multiprocessor operation and data  recording,  date management and data transfer.

PCD3.Mxxx0 have four times the number of registers and up to 5 interfaces built into the base unit.With add-on modules 8 additional serial ports can be achieved. The operating system supports different protocols, naturally Saia® S-Bus and field busses, such as Profibus and Ethernet TCP/IP.    The Profibus layer 2 (FDL) based Saia® private control network Profi-S-Net includes special features,  as multiprotocol operation (e.g. DP, MPI and HTTP), multimaster communication, the transmission of plugins (active slaves) and web access.

The  following  points  should  be  noted  when  using PCD3.F2xx interface modules.   For each PCD system, a max. of 4 PCD3.F2xx mod-

ules (8 interfaces) can be inserted in slots 0…3.   The  PCD3  system  has  a  powerful  processor  to 

look after both the application and the serial in-terfaces.  Processing  the  interface  modules  re-quires adequate CPU power. 

When determining the maximum communications  power  per  PCD3  system,  the  following  should  be  taken into account:   The communications volume is determined by periph-

eral devices connected. For example, this is the case 

if  the PCD3  is being used as an S-Bus slave station.  

  If a PCD3 controller is bombarded with heavy tele-

gram traffic at high baud rates, there will not be much 

CPU  capacity  left  for  processing  the  actual  applica-

tion. The following rules apply here: The use of 8 in-

terfaces with 9.6 kbps will take up approx. 50 percent 

of CPU capacity. Two  interfaces with 57.6 kbps will 

also take up approx. 50 percent of CPU capacity. Two 

interfaces with 115 kbps will need around 60 percent 

of CPU capacity.

   If  the PCD3 is the initiator of communication,  i.e. 

PCD3 used as master  station,  the volume of com-

munication and with it the communication capac-

ity is determined by the user program in the PCD3. 

In theory, all interfaces can run at the top transmis-

sion rate of 115 kbps. Actual data throughput, how-

ever, depends on the user program and number of 

interfaces, and may therefore be small. It is crucial 

for any peripheral devices to be capable of running 

with  the  chosen  configuration  and  communica-

tions capacity.

For these reasons we recommend that communica-tions applications with a large number of interfaces and high transmission rates should first be discussed with a local Saia® agent.

Optmum oluton fo vy countng and maung takEvery PCD3 has 1600 counting registers with a counting capacity of 2 147 483 647 (31 bit). Via the interrupt inputs counting frequencies of 1 kHz are achieved with the help of counting registers.

PCD3.H100 countng modul

The PCD3.H100 counting module counts pulses up  to 20 kHz with 16-bit resolution (counting capacity 0…65 535; can be used in tandem with CPU counter). The module has two inputs A and B and recognizes the direction of incremental shaft encoders. The counter can be enabled via an external enable signal. The CCO output (counter controlled output) is directly controlled by the counter and can, for example, be used to trigger precise external switch operations or to release an interrupt. 

The module is suitable for counting revolutions, dis-tances, volumes etc. and for measuring by counting the pulses.

PCD3.H110 countng and maung modul

This universal module not only enables counting func-tions up to 100 kHz but also the precise measurement of frequencies up to 100 kHz and the duration of periods and  pulses  up  to  one  hour.  For  this  purpose  a  FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) component  is used.    The two counting inputs A and B allow the direction of incremental shaft encoders to be recognized and the simultaneous use of counting and measuring functions in the same module. The two fast outputs: CCO (counter controlled output) and TCO (timer controlled output) can, for example, be used to trigger precise external switch operations or to release an interrupt.

Whether  the  drive  is  analogue  or  digital,  whether  there  is  a  frequency  inverter,  stepper  and  servomotors 

(DC/BL/AC), whether positioning action takes place centrally in the PCD or locally in an intelligent drive: the 

PCD offers an efficient solution for every technology and topology. By close coupling of the PCD and the driving 

controller, even complex motion sequences and  their associated peripheral control  functions can be realized 

with the comfort and diagnostic capabilities of PCD programming.

Fat labllng of I/O modul wth th Saia® abl Cato This software tool is used to inscribe PCD3 label clips effi ciently. The user enters unique data-point texts in the tool. These can then be printed on the A4 master sheet. For the different types of PCD3 modules, the user selects formats with the corresponding spacing. Text entered and all standard text parameters (such as size, colour and font) can then be stored and reused as a master.

Addng and makng I/O modul and modul holdI/O module slots in the module holder are labelled ei-ther with numbers   0…3 (PCD3.Mxxxx  / T76x / C100, C200)   0…1 (PCD3.C110)  

The inscription carrier supplied ➋ can either be used for additional labelling of the module holders, or for the I/O modules themselves. They are blank and, de-pending on requirements, may either be inscribed by hand or by means of preprinted adhesive strips ➊ .

The connection diagram printed on the side of each I/O module ➌ not only makes wiring easier, it also helps during commissioning. On the opposite side of the cassette sufficient space is available ➍ for the user to add his own labelling.

➎ Addtonal labllng on font panl Since summer 2005 all PCD3 module types can be la-belled on the front panel.Optional, neutral labels with a snap-on cover (clip) are available for this purpose.

For critical control circuits and logic functions in general  automation,  PLC  hardware  with  a  dedi-cated PLC operating system is the best platform.
