PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 655 - 9 Jun 2012 Vaccinating all school-age children against influenza is a cost-effective means of reducing infection rates in the overall population, according to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation which advises government ministers in England and Wales. The committee considered various extensions to the existing vaccination programme in these countries, which currently targets clinical risk groups including pregnant women and the elderly, and found that vaccinating all children aged 5–17 years was one of the most cost-effective options. However, routine vaccination of children should not start until at least 2014 as there are currently too few school nurses available, and non-medical staff may need to be trained to deliver the programme.
