MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH FROM 2:30-4:00pm Youll see in this newsletter information on an opportunity this month at the PARKWOOD clubhouse to get your flu shots. Why does PARKWOOD host these clinics? Please read the statement below. It is written by an ER Physician, who has witnessed first hand what happens to people our age when they dont get a flu shot. She has convinced my wife, Marylois and myself when she said Mom and Dad you really need to get flu shots each year. We want to share that information with you. -Thanks, Jon Gibson Every year in the Emergency Department, we see patients who are critically ill due to the flu. Many of these patients require hospitalization, often in the ICU and on life support. Some of these people die. The tragedy is that there is a safe, effective way to prevent the overwhelming majority of these hospitalizations and deaths - the flu vaccine! I get two main questions/comments from my patients about the flu vaccine: 1. "The last time I got the flu shot it gave me the flu!" -No, it didn't. Not possible. The flu vaccine CANNOT give you the flu. Some people will develop mild symptoms (feel achy, fatigued) after the vaccine, which is an immune response, and means the vaccine is doing its job. 2. "I got the flu vaccine once, but I got sick that year anyway so I'm not getting it again." -Remember that there are lots of viruses that can cause flu-like illnesses, but the flu vaccine only protects against influenza (one of the most serious). In addition, while it is possible to sometimes still get influenza after being vaccinated, the illness will be much more mild than if you hadn't been immunized. It is incredibly rare for someone who's been immunized to die or need to go to the ICU. The flu vaccine saves lives, and not just your own. You're often contagious before you have any symptoms, so getting the vaccine protects your loved ones too, especially those at highest risk (like babies!) from being exposed to the flu. - Alisa Larbalestrier, M.D. The CDC website also has great info, written in a patient - friendly way hps://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/keyfacts.htm

FLU SHOTS! MONDAY, SEPTEMBER

16TH FROM 2:30-4:00pm

You’ll see in this newsletter information on an opportunity this month at the PARKWOOD clubhouse to get your flu shots. Why does PARKWOOD host these clinics? Please read the statement below. It is written by an ER Physician, who has witnessed first hand what happens to people our age when they don’t get a flu shot. She has convinced my wife, Marylois and myself when she said “Mom

and Dad you really need to get flu shots each year.” We want to share that information with you. -Thanks, Jon Gibson

Every year in the Emergency Department, we see patients who are critically ill due to the flu. Many of these patients require hospitalization, often in the ICU and on life support. Some of these people die. The tragedy is that there is a safe, effective way to prevent the overwhelming majority of these hospitalizations and deaths - the flu vaccine! I get two main questions/comments from my patients about the flu vaccine:

You're often contagious before you have any symptoms, so getting the vaccine protects your loved ones too, especially those at highest risk

(like babies!) from being exposed to the flu. -Alisa Larbalestrier, M.D.

Thank you. After 51/2 years working with dementia/ Alzheimer, Bob Meyer passed away on May 10 In a nice induvial adult family home in Bremerton. I want to thank everyone who worked with Bob to help him get where he needed to go with maps and direction, brought him back to his home or mine. Helped him understand what was going on when hew was confused. A special thank you to his close by neighbors Pete and Skye Decroupet,

who welcomed Bob into their home any time from morning to late evening and then would call me to let me know he was there and safe. It was all so much appreciated! -Sue Meyer

PARKWOOD RESIDENT COMMENTS

OLD TYME COUNTRY MUSIC ~ The 1st Wednesday of each month at 6pm Les and Shirley Wamboldt will be back on the 1st Wednesday of each month to play old country music classics. Bring snacks

to share or for yourself. Coffee and tea will be provided.

Judy and I feel Parkwood is the best Senior park in the area. We bought our home in December 2017 and it has been enjoyable from day one. Prior to our move to Sequim, we searched for a senior manufactured home park and found the Parkwood website. From the start, Parkwood stood out. We loved the pictures of the park, the club house, walking paths, and variety of games and activities offered, and even appreciated the rules of the park. Our interaction with the Parkwood staff has been most enjoyable. Thank you Jon, Bethany, Dale, and

Steve. We have attended several of the luncheons and BBQ's and appreciate the staff and many volunteers that have put these and other activities together. The Parkwood staff has done a great job of keeping up the

maintenance and site appearances. We have enjoyed walking throughout the park, especially enjoying the friendliness of our neighbors. We really enjoy the peace and quiet of the park and limited traffic. This is a

wonderful place to live. -Bob and Judy Garner

It’s back to school time for Sequim kids which means we need your box tops! Please

clip box tops from items you have purchased and bring them to the Parkwood

Clubhouse. There is a box next to the office where you can drop them off.

Every valid Box Tops clip is worth 10¢.

This year’s Annual Community Yard Sale ran for two days with over 30 homes participating. There

were a couple of traffic jams during the rush times but for the most part everything went smoothly.

We’ve heard from a few residents who said they did very well, how about you? Do you think two days is

better than one? Is there anything we can do to improve the sale? Please let us know by dropping a

comment in the comment box or emailing [email protected].

Thank you to all who took part in the event and a special thank you to our neighbors not

participating for being understanding and patient during this event!

MAP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, BEING PART OF THE SOLUTION

This month we take a look at Zones 8, 9, 10, 11. Basically they comprise the south, central and south western parts of Parkwood.

Zone 8~19 homes/4 Areas Captain Betty Marshall ( also Leader for Area B) Berit Cole Leader Area A, Bill Barger Leader Areas C and D. At this writing Zone 8 is scheduled to have its 3rd Annual

Meeting on August 21. We look for a big turnout to hear from Paramedic Michael Benier about a practical approach to medical self help in a disaster. We will also review and update our Plan.

Zone 9~20 homes/4 areas Captain Sharon Morseman , Jerry Walker Leader Area A, NO LEADER Area B, Susan Benier Leader Area C.

Zone 10~17 Homes/3 areas NO CAPTAIN, NO LEADERS for the 3 zones. ALL POSITIONS ARE VACANT. Can someone among your 21 households get in touch with Barbara Kent Alford and organize a neighborhood gathering? That’s all you need to do, offer a meeting place. Barb will take it from there,

presenting the video and leading the discussion, You will all leave with copies of the 9 step plan and maybe some one will even volunteer to be the captain or a leader. At the very least you will have the

same information as all other residents of Parkwood and a chance to improve your situation should there be a disaster.

Zone 11~21 Homes/4 areas Captain Tim Freischlad (also Leader for Area D). Julie Prafke Leader Area B. note Julie is also PERT OPS OFFICER 2. NO LEADERS AREAS A and C. UPDATE, Since last

month Zone11 had had a very successful 3rd Annual Meeting with 22 people in attendance. Way to go!

SUMMARY~ There are 11 neighborhood zones in Parkwood. Only three of them, Zones 2,4 and 10 have

not met and have no captains. If these three zones can organize we will have 100 percent of our households covered with neighborhood plans.

That would be an amazing statistic, by far outdoing any other Sequim area community. However the big

benefit is not in bragging rights to statistics, but in direct benefit to the well being of our residents if the

Big One should happen.

For further information call Mike Hansen at 360-808-6604 or Barbara Kent Alford

at 360-683-2594.
