THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Stir up thy power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let thy bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON The desert blooms as God’s people return from exile • Isaiah 35:1-10

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God's people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

THE PSALM Lauda, anima mea • Psalm 146:4-9

4 Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help!* whose hope is in the LORD their God;

5 Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; * who keeps his promise for ever;

6 Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, * and food to those who hunger.

7 The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind; * the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down;

8 The LORD loves the righteous; the LORD cares for the stranger; * he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked.

9 The LORD shall reign for ever, * your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah!

THE SECOND LESSON Patience until the coming of the Lord • James 5:7-10

Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

THE GOSPEL The forerunner of Christ • Matthew 11:2-11

When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me." As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, `See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he."

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE We pray for those among us who are sick or have other needs.

Alex, Ben*, Clay and Erin, Diana, Eleanor*, Hugh, Br. Jonathan, OSF*, Katherine, Kevin, Livvy and her family, Margie, Mark, Martin*, Michael, Wayne, Whit, Betty Gay Beam*, Franklin Bell, Kenneth Bond, Nancy Bradford, Harriet Bredin, Betsy Brown, Jack Buchanan

SENDING FORTH OF THE EUCHARISTIC VISITORS At the conclusion of communion, the Eucharistic Visitors go to the altar rail.

We send you out to share Communion this day. May you carry the prayers of all of us as you take this sacrament of Christ’s presence. May those who receive it from you be strengthened and encouraged in that community we have together in our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Trinity ECW will be selling homemade Mild Mexican Chicken and Rice Soup after each service on Sunday, December 18 for $8.00 per quart. We will be outside the Church entrance doors unless it is snowing, raining or sleeting and then we will be inside the Parish Hall. The proceeds from this sale will go into our fund to reprint the Trinity “Windows/Parish” book. The soup which contains chicken, broth, salsa, lime, corn, rice and black beans is frozen, so all you have to do is go home, put it in a pot and heat slowly. Add avocado, sour cream, cheese, tortilla chips and perhaps extra spice. You will have a quick meal in this wonderful but hectic season. Thank you.

Office Closed for In Service Day: The office will be closed on Tuesday, December 20 for an in service day. We will be unavailable to answer the door or the phones and will return messages on the following day. Thank you!

Please use the envelopes provided at the back of the church for your donation and place in the collection plate or drop by the office no later than Monday, Dec. 12. If you wish to make a donation online, go to http://trinitystaunton.org/online-giving/ and select the fund “Gifts to Outreach” and put “gift card” or “food costs” in the memo space.

Christmas Eve Services: Family Service with Eucharist at 5pm, Music for the Nativity at 10pm and Festive Choral Eucharist at 10:30pm. The Christmas Day Eucharist will be at 10:30am.

Giving New Life to our Church Nursery: Our church nursery is the first place that many of our young families see when they visit Trinity Church. It is vital that parents, caregivers and children feel welcome, safe and comfortable in the nursery. The toys, books and other playthings in our nursery have been well loved and used for many, many years. To that end, the Christian Education Committee is working to update and freshen up this important space for the smallest people in our church community. How can you help? A wishlist has been created at Pufferbellies Toys & Books on Johnson Street with specific recommendations for new toys and books. We hope you will consider purchasing a specific gift for our church nursery or donating funds to be used for other larger items in the nursery. (For example, we hope to replace the old, dingy, plastic kitchen set with a sturdy, made in America wood kitchen set that will last for many, many years.) Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Calendars for Ritenour: Please leave all your unwanted calendars in the copy room for us to give to the residents of Ritenour. Thanks to you who have already done so. They love their calendars.

Security System: Our church sanctuary is protected in the evenings by Vector Security system’s automatic alarm. On Thursday, Dec. 1, the Parish House will also now be automatically alarmed beginning at 11:00pm. (It will be disarmed each morning at 6am.) This is done automatically, so no groups need to worry about setting or disarming upon leaving the building. Please make sure your groups are out before 11pm, turn off all lights, and lock the door behind you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the office 886-9132.
