April/May 2015

Let me start this article by saying “Thank You” to our Safety Team as I

had a situation at the Dade City Hare Scrambles that got my attention, I was very grateful and lucky that there was someone there that was able to help. I wasn’t feeling well Saturday morning and as the day went on, it seemed to get worse. Old age, not listening to my elders (TF) or just being stubborn, things started to go south. I remember sitting down in the camper and next thing I know, Donny and Levic were all over me with Karin standing by ready to give a hand. As the EMT/ambulance crew had left for the day, I was in their hands.

Taking no chances, Donnie cut through the red tape with a phone call and got the closest EMT crew back within minutes. All seemed to check out and I was actually feeling better, but enough about me, this is more about what we sometimes take for granted.

I’ve been around to see a few and have heard about many serious situations where our team of medics responded and handled everything from minor cuts and bruises to the life threating encounters. I am

so glad that we have a team of medics who will come to our rescue in time of need. Their unselfishness, devotion and professional care that they give to us and to the FTR on our race weekends is unbelievable. I’m proud and very appreciative we have these guys and gals there for us. I can’t imagine them not being around in case of an emergency.Take the time to appreciate what we have and to say “Thank You” to these volunteers who one day may help you or a loved one.

Thank you for your support,

Randy [email protected] §

Garrett Edmisten #217 AA continued to dominate at the Dade City race and finished first overall with five consistent laps in 1:43:40.

The #44 AA Massachusetts native Nick Batten was the only one to turn a faster lap time than #217 - by 3 seconds - but Batten only finished three laps.

“Just Thinking”

Dear FTR Family,

I want to write a quick note to you. The season is winding down. So long as the weather behaves, we have two more races left and I look forward to seeing you there!

Since I last wrote, Ethan is now halfway through his Navy Boot Camp experience. We received a letter from him the other day. He is doing well. He really misses home and family. He says it is tough, but he is having a good time. Sounds like an FTR event to me!

I received a call from Brian Coughlin last week to let me know that one of our own had passed away. Though many of you will not have known the pleasure of spending time with the Gebhardt family (Jason, Julie, and Kayli), I know that those who have some FTR years under their belt will recall these folks with fond memories.

If I remember, when Jason competed, he rode Vet C and eventually B. However, everyone knew his primary interest was his daughter Kayli, now age 18. Kayli and Ethan raced together from Peewee to Mini. Jason and I (along with our wives) spent many times side-by-side on Saturday waiting for our kids to come around the course. However, like many FTR families, other things in life get in the way of racing and they move on. For most, this is a natural progression of racing life. In time, Kayli became very involved with sports; so much so that when she graduates from high school this May, she will attend college on a sports scholarship. You go, girl!

I am saddened to say that on Sunday, March 29, Jason (the driver) and his father (the passenger) were traveling together in a car in West Virginia when they collided with a tree. Unfortunately, Jason

did not survive. At the time of this writing, his father is still in the hospital but should recover soon.

On Easter weekend, Julie asked if I would come and lead the memorial service. It was held outside at a park along the water’s edge in Stuart, Florida. God blessed us with a beautiful day. I had forgotten that Jason served in the Coast Guard. The Honor Guard was there and performed their presentation, along with a 21-gun salute. He will be missed. Please pray for Julie and Kayli as they move forward in their lives. Thank you for the few moments to reflect back in time to one of our wonderful Florida Trail Rider families - the Gebhardts.

As always, I look forward to seeing you on the line!Your friend,Andy DicksonFTR ChaplainSuper Senior A #121

“Run the race with endurance, the course that has been laid out for you” (Hebrews 12:1).

By now you’ve probably heard that I decided to resign from my position as magazine editor and publisher

- the contract is up for grabs until the end of May; visit the FTR website if you’re interested. It’s been nearly five years since I started publishing this magazine, which was bimonthly in 2010, black and white with little advertising income, and now it’s full-color, printed monthly (mostly) and the advertising income keeps growing (mostly online only.)

I am so thankful for all of the support I’ve received from you, the members,

over the years and it has been a privilege to serve. I never imagined this day would come - I hate quitting anything! - and it sure was a tough decision but, after a good deal of introspection, I decided to accept a position in Asheville at

the local newspaper (though I’m more excited to start blazing the trails up here in North Carolina, but don’t tell my boss.)

In my time as magazine editor, I’ve tried to raise the profile of the magazine

through my journalistic integrity, and I hope the next editor can uphold that which I’ve worked so hard to create. It’s a labor of love and most weekends, I poured my heart into my racing, reporting and photographing all at once. Thanks to the photographers who helped me along the way and everyone in my FTR family who supported me on and off the track. I’ve spent more time in InDesign than should be allowed, turned weekend warriors into lifetime friends and even managed to find love at the races. I’d call

that a good run, wouldn’t you? Follow me on Twitter @no1jenn to keep up. Ride on! - J S

“if you really want to do good and win, if you really want it that bad then work hard for it and stay

in school definitely stay in school

because you never know. i believe that education

comes first and you can’t go anywhere

without it. You need a backup plan.”

- RH

Editor’s note: it’s not very often that i meet a fellow competitor who i would want as a friend in real life, too, but ramsey henderson is one of those rare females i admire and look up to, even though she’s at least four inches shorter than i am. At 20 years old, ramsey’s been riding for more than half of her life and self-promoted herself to the Women A class this season, in between college, work and trying to qualify for this year’s Amateur national motocross Championship at loretta lynn’s in tennessee. i caught up with ramsey just before her second qualifer in may after she scored a 100 on one of her finals. We met up for a quick ride together on some private trails outside of Orlando and finished with a photo shoot at the motocross track off interstate 4. she’s fast at both and we caught up later to talk about her transition from motocross to woods (and back again) which one she prefers and what she considers her “backup plan.”

JS: Ramsey, let’s start at the beginning. Where were you born?RH: I was born in Eustis, Florida. JS: And that’s where you live now? RH: Yeah.JS: So, like, same house?RH: No, a little bit more down the street. JS: Did you know the nickname for Eustis is “Useless”?RH: It is, actually. There’s nothing to do around here.JS: That’s probably a good thing to keep you out of trouble.RH: Yeah, unless you go out to the woods or something but other than that, there’s nothing to do.JS: What was your first motorcycle memory and how old were you?RH: My first motorcycle memory was when I was like 7 and my sister was learning how to ride and she actually was going too fast across the field and she ended up wadding up on a 50, which is a horrible memory but...JS: But that’s what you remember...How old was she? RH: She had to be about 5. I was riding with her; we were riding together; it was super fun. She was on a 50. I think I was on my XR 70.JS: Was that your first bike?RH: My first bike was a PW50. It was yellow and I was number one. JS: Then you moved up to the 70?RH: Yes. JS: How old were you on the 50?RH: I got on a 50 when I was about 5.JS: Your dad obviously got you into riding. Do you know how he started riding?RH: He didn’t start riding until I think he was in his 20s but he used to race jet skis really competitively; he almost made it to the c o n t i n u e d o n n e x t p a g e

Bobby Henderson photo At the Brooksville Hare Scrambles Ramsey finished four th in Women A.

“i liked that it was rough. i really like single trail and the tight stuff.” - Ramsey Henderson

Loretta Lynn’s of jetskiing.JS: Oh, wow. I had no idea. So what did your mom say when she’s had two daughters under the age of 10 riding dirt bikes?RH: I think she was scared. I think she secretly loved it but she was scared of girls doing a guy’s sport. JS: For sure. But you didn’t care and your dad didn’t care?RH: My dad was actually thrilled. He could not wait to get me riding. He used to take me on like street bike rides whenever I was like 6. He just could not wait.JS: What was your first race?RH: My first race, I was on a KTM 50 in 2002 at Dade City and I didn’t know what the jumps were and I had no clue what I was doing and I would stop at the top of a jump and ask my dad, ‘What do I do now? How do I ride this?’JS: Because you had just riding in the fields at your house?RH: Yes. JS: So growing up racing, you did motocross?RH: I’ve done motocross my whole life.JS: After you figured out how to jump on your 50 then what happened?RH: I just wanted to ride all the time. I wanted to start racing and then I started watching Ashley Fiolek. I wanted to be like her so.JS: How did you find FTR?RH: My dad used to race FTR a while ago whenever I was growing up and I just wasn’t into the woods and then I think I did my first FTR race on an 85 whenever I was just learning how to ride 85. It was in Orlando and I raced Mini C and I wasn’t able to do another one because I didn’t do too well. And then I got more into it whenever I was on my 125 and wanted to do something different. I really like it.JS: But at first you weren’t into it because it wasn’t cool or what?RH: My fitness wasn’t there. I was still learning how to ride an 85 and it was very difficult for me to ride the Saturday race; I wasn’t used to racing rough stuff like

that. It was rough to me at the time. I just wasn’t used to it at all and I wanted to wait until I was more experience to get back into it.JS: That’s probably smart. So, you learned all your technique at the motocross track because you’re pretty short...RH: I’ve been pretty much been 5’4” since middle school. I was really tiny on an 85. I had to be like 4’9” or something on an 85.JS: So you got on the 125, started racing in the woods

and then what happened?RH: And then I’m in love with the woods.JS: Why?RH: I really like it. I like the endurance and it’s fun. The FTR family is really nice. It’s a different crowd. Growing up in motocross, all the dads weren’t that friendly and coming over to FTR, it’s a whole entire different experience whenever I was much older. JS: Did your sister keep riding?RH: She quit riding a long time ago. She got really good on 50s and she was going to do her first race. Then she started dancing and she seem to like that a lot more.JS: So it was just you and Dad?RH: Those were the days (laughs.) JS: Fast forward to what happened after that?RH: I moved up to Juniors when I was like 16. I went back and forth between Junior and Junior Girls. I think the best I got in Junior was like third place

and I was really happy; that was at Gatorback with the motocross track.JS: So you were pretty young racing with the guys, that’s interesting. RH: I’ve always liked racing with the guys even in motocross; I used to race Supermini a lot. They’re more aggressive, they make me more competitive and they make me push myself even more because they’re not scared to push you around and it teaches me to not be scared of that.

2 92 8 Florida Trail riders Magazine @FTrMoTo #FTrMoTo april/May 2015JS: How did to you get to Sunday?RH: Me and my dad just decided one day, I was like 17 or 18, and we just decided that I was going to sign up in Women B and just try it, try Sunday out, and I really liked the Sunday trail way better than the Saturday trail. They add in more stuff and I liked that it was rough. I really like single trail and the tight stuff.I think my first race was Bartow in Women B and I think I ended up winning and I really liked it. We were going to do a season but I decided to focus on motocross and I just popped in here and there just to do it and then we decided to do the whole entire series. (Editor’s note: Ramsey won the Women B Hare Scrambles championship in 2013-2014.)JS: Then this year you didn’t quite get promoted to A but you decided to go anyway?RH: Yeah, I could have stayed in B for another year the way my advancement points were but I raced Women B at Maxville and I ended up winning it and I ended up hurting myself and I just rode it out and I still won. After that we just decided to move myself up to A because I wanted to challenge myself and try to keep up with you girls even though that’s hard to do.JS: What did you hurt at Maxville?RH: I ended up hitting a stump with my foot and my foot was black and blue and swollen the doctor said I sprained it but it wasn’t too serious but it still hurt to put pressure on it and stuff.JS: How? Did you crash?RH: I got together with this other guy who wouldn’t move out of my way so I went to go out of the trail to go pass him and I ended up hitting the stump and I crashed into him and we both crashed. It sucked but...JS: He could have just moved out of your way? RH: It was my fault trying to go past him?JS: Maybe but let’s talk about how hard it is sometimes to get around the guys?RH: Yeah, it’s like they don’t want to let that happen. They can’t come to their senses and just let a girl pass them.JS: So, what’s your dad’s role in all of this and how does he help you the most?RH: He’s the biggest part of my racing. I don’t know what I would do without him because he helps me so

much. I love having him there racing with me and being apart of it. He helps me and pushes me to achieve my goals. He’s helped me a lot with woods racing like how to get through stuff and around stuff. He helps me get to the races and makes it so much fun. He’s my mechanic, dad and my best friend. He’s also my goal to beat him straight up in the woods.JS: Well, you’ve had some pretty good results for your first year in the A class so did you meet your expectations or how do you think your results have been?RH: My results have been okay. I’m pretty happy with them for my first season in Women A because it’s a completely different field. My goal for the whole entire season was to win one race and I was pretty close at Palm Beach. I was leading the whole entire race and then I ended up coming in too hot into one of the mud corners and just tucked the front end and I had short people problems and couldn’t start my bike and then here comes Kelsey (Saltar) and then here comes Ashlee (Applewhite) and I was like, ‘Oh, great, this is awesome,’ but I ended up catching back up to them and ended up finishing second,

which was pretty happy with that because I was leading the race and that was pretty good for me. It was a good experience to be leading Women A; it wasn’t easy, that’s for sure.JS: When you get your new bike?RH: I got my new bike in January.JS: But you didn’t race it for a while?RH: Yeah I didn’t race it for a while because I’ve never been on a KTM. I’ve never really been on a new bike and I definitely wasn’t used to it because it was totally different than my Suzuki and I’ve had my Suzuki for so long but my Suzuki was just falling apart every time I rode it, so it was about that time to get something different. I got my bike from Beach Boulevard Motorsports. They gave me a good deal on it. Andy (Kent)’s awesome. JS: Have you ever ridden an enduro?RH: I don’t think I’ve ever done an Enduro. I think I’ve done one once but I don’t remember it.JS: Then it definitely doesn’t count.RH: I’ve been wanting to do an Enduro I just don’t know what it’s like. I would love to do one; I think we might do a couple next year just for fun.

JS: Where’d you get your number 40?RH: I was number 4 for a while because I’m a huge Ricky Carmichael fan and whenever I moved on to 80s, a lot of people had the number 4 and I got tired of slashing my number so I came to the liking of the number 40.JS: What do you do as far as training and fitness?RH: I go mountain biking at least once a week but that’s kind of hard with my work and school schedule and stuff. I have a full gym in my garage so I can go out there and work out, get on the spin bike or the row machine or lift a little bit of weights. Scott (Gawler, Jr. - Ramsey’s boyfriend) has been making me go run. He made me go run the other day and I about died. I think we went in the evening about 4 or 5 o’clock - the hottest part of the day.JS: How’d you guys meet?RH: We were both at the Sumterville race last year. I met him through Matt Boni. He’s one of Matt’s friends so we kind of just talked and said good luck to each other and after that we started hanging out and then we started dating. He’s pretty cool; I really like him.JS: It probably doesn’t hurt that he rides AA?RH: I can’t keep up with him in the woods. We go riding over at his house in my one lap is like his six laps. JS: What’s your biggest challenge?RH: My biggest challenge is just trying to fit everything in one week with work school writing and training. I’m really focused on making Loretta’s, which I’m trying to find the time go to the track and stuff. It’s just hard.JS: Where do you work? RH: Oakwood smokehouse. I’m on my feet all day. I usually work doubles from 10:30 a.m. until about 9:30 at night.JS: What are you going to school for?RH: I’m going to school to be a pharmacist. I really came to liking that in high school and I researched it a lot and I really want to go to pharmacy school I’m trying to get into the University of Florida College of Pharmacy - that’s my goal.JS: You must be really smart!RH: I don’t know. I doubt myself a lot but I just passed all my exams with A’s so I guess I could say I’m pretty smart.JS: Does it come natural or do you really have to work at it?RH: I really have to work at it. I stay up until about 1 or 2 o’clock in the morning studying and then wake up at 7 or 8 a.m. to study some more and then go to class.JS: What would you say your strengths are on the motorcycle?RH: I’m really good at corners (but) there’s really not

much. It’s hard because I’m short.JS: So, that’s your weakness then, right?RH: Yeah, Tom Fleming lowered my bike a little so it makes it a lot easier but there’s still moments when I have short people problems. It’s just hard because I’m so tiny, I can’t muscle my bike through some of the stuff.JS: But you’re really fast in the open stuff, too? RH: I try to sometimes I get a little sketchy and scare myself.JS: What’s your favorite FTR memory?RH: The race when I wrapped up the Women B championship, I was so happy. I jumped off my bike and my dad was so happy because it was a rough season - I had some off races and I couldn’t make it to some of them and we didn’t know if I was going to get it or not - so I was really happy.JS: What’s your best advice for young up-and-comers? RH: If you really want to do good and win, if you really want it that bad then work hard for it and stay in school definitely stay in school because you never know. I believe that education comes first and you can’t go anywhere without it. You need a backup plan.JS: Any sponsors you would like to thank?RH: I would like to thank the man above for keeping me safe, my dad, my mom, my sister, Tom Fleming at TF Racing Suspension - Tom has helped me so much with the set up of my bike, it’s amazing - Andy at Beach Boulevard, Fly Racing, 100%, Seat Concepts and 352 Motorsports for helping me out.JS: Nice. Thank you. Now for the Facebook questions! For some of them, it may be acceptable to answer with, “No comment.”

RH: I’d say about 50 cats is too many cats. 30 is pushing it. I have two; I wish I had more but if I bring home one more I get kicked out.

RH: In motocross, my dad won’t ride with me. He waits until I get off the track because I’ll go by him - I’ll wait for him and I’ll go by him - and jump over his head and look over at him and he’ll get so mad and just wait for me to get off the track to go on. In the woods, I’m running him down. He doesn’t like to admit that I’m on his back tire but.JS: Do you like motocross better?RH: I kind of like both.I’m torn between both. Both are my favorite. I like motocross. I’m not afraid to jump but I’ve been riding woods for so long, I’m trying to get my jumping back.JS: I guess if you don’t use it you lose it, right?RH: Yeah.

RH: I think that I want to my goal is to win a Women A jacket so I think after that I’ll eventually move to B 200 or something and try something different. I might do a few races next season in B 200. I don’t know when I’m going to reach my goal of a Women A championship but I’m going to try and make it happen.

RH: No comment.

RH: I don’t sleep sometimes but I make it happen. It’s possible. it’s always a challenge. I really like working and going to school and riding and I think it’s good to be going to school because a lot of people my age aren’t going to school.

RH: It’s a pretty difficult task. The rough life.

RH: Which cat shoes I have like five pairs. I have a pair of Vans at the cats all over them; he’s probably talking about those.

RH: No comment.

RH: It’s helped me tremendously a lot. It handles a whole lot better. On my Suzuki, I would ride like super sketchy and I would just wait for it to kick me. This bike - knock on wood - has not like thrown me over the bars or kicked me and I still brace myself and get ready to get bucked everywhere but I really like it a lot and it’s helped me so much; I can actually finish everything and not worry about if my bike is going to fall apart or not.

RH: He’s coming into one of mine. He’s starting to get so jealous because I can almost keep up with him.JS: Probably because you don’t eat as many cookies?RH: He’s the Cookie Monster. He can eat a whole entire pack of cookies and blame it on my cat.JS: What are your cats’ names?RH: Skittles and Nemo.

RH: Going back to motocross, I’m worried about someone messing with my bike because I’ve had it happen before and it completely messed up me making Loretta’s on 85s because somebody put a whole bottle of water in my gas tank before the race. And then the practice day, somebody cut my gas line. We were out of the back of a pickup truck so we had to park way in the back so I guess whenever we went to sign up or whenever we were watching the races, it’s so easy to come by and just do whatever, so coming back to making Loretta’s this year I’m on my toes; I didn’t leave my truck once at the qualifiers.JS: Wow! At the FTR races, people will give you a gas line if you need one!RH: That’s why I like the FTR family because they’re so nice; I don’t have

anything to worry about at the FTR races. At the motocross racers there’s a fear that someone is going to sabotage me again

RH: I used to not eat anything before a race because I would feel like I was throw up but Scott and my dad are making me eat before races now and I am starting to feel better racing and have more energy. I usually eat eggs, potatoes and bacon and then maybe a cliff bar or peanut butter and jelly.

RH: I would definitely like us to get more recognition. The GNCC for the Women is awesome. We have our own row and I really like that but on the motocross side, it’s not so good. They’re starting to get the Pro Women series back slowly but surely but I would just like us to get more recognition because we do put in as much work as the guys do.

RH: I would ask. Me getting into it, I would watch my dad and want to get into it, so I think both of y’all should start riding together.

Proposal #4 FTR Hare Scrambles Team Rules Proposal, January 3, 2014.Current:11. Team Scoringa. A team shall consist of not less than three riders nor more than five riders. Riders may compete on only one team per day. Quadriders shall be exclusive to quad teams and bike ridersshall be exclusive to bike teams. They must be entered as a team before the meet begins. The best three scores will be used to determine the winning team for that event. In case of a tie, the 4th then 5th place riders placing will be used to determine the team winner. A team competing for a year end award shall remain consistent in its members. An eight member roster must be registered with the Hare Scrambles Scorekeeper. A minimum of any three, or a maximum of any five of these members, may enter an event. Teams must be entered before the end of sign up. FTRforms are available for this purpose. A team roster can only be changed in the event that the member(s) being deleted from the team is unable to compete in 3 or more of the remaining events for the season. Roster changes must be submitted in writing to theHare Scrambles Scorekeeper.

b. The team standings for the overall winner of the team trophy will be determined by the formula for individuals; i.e., if a team wins theevent, they receive 50 points. The second place team receives 47 points, etc., as above.

c. Point system for team scoring:1st place in class 50 points2nd place in class 47 points3rd place in class 45 points4th place in class 43 points5th place in class 41 points6th place in class 40 points(etc. - one point less per position)

d. The Year-End winner will be determined by counting the team scores from all races on the season schedule, less one. Proposed changes:11. Team Scoringa. (General): Year-end awards will be made separately for Hare Scrambles Bike and Quad Team competition. Only Sunday Classes are eligible for Bike competition. All Quad classes, except Pee-wee classes, are eligible for Quad team competition.b. (Team Rosters): An official team roster consisting of at least 3, but not more than 8, riders must be registered with the Hare Scrambles Scorekeeper to qualify a team for competition. The roster must carry the signature of each registered team member. A team member may be deleted from a team only after that member has failed to compete in 3 consecutive Hare Scramble events in the current

season. New members may be added at any time (up to the maximum of 8 riders per team), but roster changes and signatures must be submitted before the start of an event in order to count for that event. No rider shall be a member of more than one team per day. A rider may compete on both a Bike and Quad team. Team members may change classes, within their respective eligible bike or quad group, without penalty to the team.

c. (Race Entry): A team shall designate, in writing, a minimum of any three, or a maximum of any five registered members to be scored for an event prior to the start of that event. The team shall pay an entry fee of $1 per rider, per event, prior to submitting their entry. Designated riders for an event must be officially entered and compete in the event. Compete means they must start the race with their designated class, and shall not have received a refund of entry fee. Riders doing “work credit” in their registered team class at an event are not eligible for team competition for that event.

d. (Scoring): The best three scores for each team will be used to determine the winning team for each event. In case of a tie, the 4th, then 5th, place riders placing will be used to determine the team winner. The team standings for the overall winner of the team trophy will be determined by the formula for individuals; i.e., 1st place = 50 points; 2nd place = 47 points; 3rd place = 45 points; 4th place = 43 points; 5th place = 41 points; 6th place = 40 points (etc. - one point less per position). The Year-End winner will be determined by counting the team scores from all races completed in a season, less one. Season-end ties will be won by the team with the highest number of event wins, followed by number of 2nd places (etc), if necessary.

e. (Protests and Penalties): Any team wishing to protest team scoring results must file a protest in writing (or email) with the Hare Scrambles Referee within 5 days of the date that the Team Standings and Results are posted on the internet. After this time, results become final. Any score adjustments made as a result of a protest shall only apply to the race at hand, and not be retroactive to previous races.

Discussion of changes:- Clarifies Team entry and scoring procedures.- Clarifies substitution criteria and makes it more easily enforceable.- Requires riders to participate in order to be scored.- Adds tie-breaker provision.

Motion for a second vote, William TorekiSecond, Ron ThomasVote 11 for, 1 againstRule passes

Old Business: William Toreki presented two versions of a rule to modify the penalty for a double green infraction. After presenting both versions and discussing them, the committee decided to accept Version B as a proposal.

Version A (Automatic 1-lap penalty):... Any section of the trail marked by a pair of double over-and under GREEN arrows on both sides of the trail indicates the competitors must ride between the two sets of arrows and cannot ride outside either pair of arrows. Any

time a rider leaves the trail as defined above, (either by line picking: overshooting turns, failing to pass between GREEN arrows, emergency, etc.) that rider must return to the trail and re-enter at the point they left; failure to do so is a rule violation. Any such violation reported to the FTR Referee, Associate Referee or Scorekeeper prior to the end of the protest period, in writing on official DQ/penalty form available at FTR trailer, shall result in a minimum of a one-lap penalty (per violation). Penalty shall be enforced by deleting the rider’s final completed lap for the race. A more severe penalty of Disqualification may be assessed, in accordance with Article XIV of the FTR Constitution, if there is evidence that the violation was intentional, or constituted a significant safety hazard. A violation of this section does not automatically constitute blatant course cutting, as discussed in Chapter VIII, section B-1a.

A discussion was had about the need for the clubs to help with the policing of our pit riding rules and spectator and rider safety in general. This is very important as the liability is a very real threat to our organization as a whole.

We also recognized Ron Thomas and Pete Rose for stepping up to help the clubs run a more constant tech inspection and this does not mean the clubs do not have to supply tech people; they are only there to assist the clubs and make the decision making more consistent.

“i definitely like riding a two stroke in the woods. i don’t think i could ride a four stroke in the woods. Gotta be a two stroke, for sure. ” - aW

JS: What’s the biggest challenges?AW: The biggest challenge is racing on Saturday night and then driving to race on Sunday because I wanted to finish out both (FTR and flat track) seasons. I’m the driver, the rider, the mechanic. I do everything.

JS: Who (else) does that?AW: Nobody that I see. You really don’t know until you’ve tried it. Most people travel far and get there on Saturday and race on Sunday where I’m traveling far to race on Saturday to travel far to race on Sunday. JS: I’ve seen a lot of the younger flat track racers coming over and asking you what tire pressure you’re running or what gearing. They really look up to you. AW: I always love helping people out and giving people advice, seeing the sport grow. Flat track here in Florida has definitely grown since I started. It’s pretty cool having one big family just at a little circle track.

JS: What are your weaknesses?AW: That’s a good question. I really can’t say I have too many weaknesses. I try not to let stuff bring me down and try to stay positive no matter what the outcome is, from not making mains to whatever.

JS: What about strengths? AW: You just gotta want it. You can’t let stuff get in your way. The most important skill I would say is being able to work on my bike and get stuff done when it needs to be done because if I had to take it to a shop and pay for it to get done, then I wouldn’t be where I am today because I don’t have the money to do that.

JS: Who has been your biggest help or influence? AW: Brad Baker. He currently rides for Factory Harley-Davidson and is national number 6 and Kevin Atherton who also rode for Factory Harley-Davidson from 1989 to 2003. (Andy wears Kevin’s national number 23 helmet when he races flat track.)

JS: How’d you meet Brad Baker? AW: I just rode up on his trailer on my mountain bike at Savannah one year and ended up being his mechanic at Daytona for rounds 1 and 2. Brad does a lot for the sport in today’s world of flat tracking. It’s getting better everyday with the races available to go race. Not just media wise. There are outlaw races popping up everywhere.

JS: Which do you like better: woods or flat track?AW: The flat track races, it’s easier to meet your competitors and actually hang out and get to talk to people and learn what they’re learning. It’s just the whole format of having practice and then heat races. It’s like, when I’m not racing, I’m watching my friends race - my friends are my competitors, too. With trail riding, you don’t get to watch your friends win a race and then you go out and they watch you win a race and then you meet in the main. I can’t pick one over the other because I like all of them. I do.

JS: How much does the setup play into your results?AW: It’s crucial. There’s so many things you can do to your suspensions to tire pressures to the wheel base to the swing arm angle to the gearing.

JS: Do you think it matters more in flat track?

AW: Oh, yeah, it does. In the woods, it depends what bike you have. If you have a small bike and you gotta run a specific gearing because the bike won’t pull it.

JS: So, what’s your sprocket range for flat track?AW: I’d say like a 38- to a 54-tooth.

JS: What’s your ideal machine?

AW: For flat tracking, it would definitely be a Honda CRF450, which I have. In the woods, a KTM 200 or 300. I don’t have one yet but eventually I will have one. [Editor’s note: By press time, Andy had his KTM200.]

JS: I noticed you were competing in the King of the Woods rounds. What do you think of that idea?AW: It’s definitely pretty cool. I wanted to try and finish on top and get the helmet but maybe next year. I really didn’t even know I was in the running until three rounds into it and then I was just having fun.

JS: What are you looking forward to next?AW: The day when I get a 750 Harley-Davidson flat tracker and I get to hold it wide open on a mile. That will be the day.

JS: What’s your favorite FTR track? AW: Samsula is my favorite Hare Scrambles place because it’s always wet. Something about the mud, I love.

JS: Anyone you want to thank? AW: My sponsors: Tom at Orange Cycle Parts, Chuck Orcutt (of Orcutt’s Tree Service) for not only being a friend and a boss because if it wasn’t for him then I probably wouldn’t have the money to go do everything I’ve wanted to do in the past 11 years, 53 Graphics, Woody Kyle Racing for helping me out with my motors and getting me set up, Thunder McHaffie who owns the Built Brand Clothing company, Goodwin Racing. Brad Baker and Kevin Atherton for telling me all the information before I get to the track because to be able to be good you have to know the setup when you get there.

JS: Anything else you want to say? AW: Anything’s possible if you put your mind to it. Get it done and don’t give up. You can’t do it sitting at home.

JS: Thank you, Andy. §

4 1Florida Trail riders Magazine @FTrMoTo #FTrMoTo april/May 2015I think I beat the B class by like 15 minutes or something crazy. I started enjoying woods riding more and more as I moved up through the classes.

JS: Were you hooked after that? AW: I like all aspects of riding. All disciplines, I guess you would say.

JS: Why did you start racing flat track? AW: I got started racing flat track after I met Charlie Shepherd in Crystal River where I live. He said come to Ocala and race his 450 DTX bike.

JS: What’s a DTX bike? AW: A motocross version bike converted to a flat tracker with a 19-inch front tire and no front brakes. My first race was in the Open Amateur class. I raced against Joshua Day, a pro street bike kid. It was his first time racing it, too, and he was winning so pulled off after the white flag. I think because he felt bad; he was an AMA pro guy who just came for fun so I pulled off, too. I was so focused on his rear tire.

JS: That’s funny. Then what happened? AW: David Hill at Orange Cycle Parts told me that he was going to put me on his framer to make sure I came to the next race. He told me he saw potential in me and my second race I’m racing against Kenny Coolbeth (Jr. He’s national number 2 and the winningest racer in AMA Pro Flat Track.)

JS: When did you start riding Enduros?AW: My first Enduro was Croom and I remember whatever year it was because Jaco (Wolmarans) broke his foot. Probably three or four years ago.I definitely like the resets because it gives me a little break; you know, to help yourself get re-situated.

JS: What do you like better? AW: I would say I do better in Hare Scrambles only because I think every time I go do an Enduro, I never pre-enter so I’m always in the back so I have to fight through all the people that are quitting – people that are straight giving up. I gotta get through all those people.

JS: A few weeks ago at the Samsula Enduro, you caught your first A 200 win. How was that? AW: It was tough. Super tight trees. My back tire started falling apart. No traction on a 125. I still think flat tracking’s tougher. It may seem easier but at the end of the day, go out there and

try it. It’s tough.

JS: Why do still you ride a 125?AW: It’s light. It’s easy to ride. I just kind of fell into the bike and I was like, “That’s gonna be my woods bike.”I definitely like riding a two stroke in the woods. I don’t think I could ride a four stroke in the woods. Gotta be a two stroke, for sure.

JS: I believe you’re the only FTR member who also races professional flat track. This year at Bike Week, you also raced the Endurocross before rounds 1 and 2 of the AMA Pro Flat Track at Daytona? AW: It was a lot to put on myself, for sure, but I just wanted to try to make it happen. It was pretty stressful on myself but I was willing. I just always had a dream being a kid of being a motorcycle racer. (Andy is the 2014 Southern Dirt Track Association Series Pro Singles and Pro-Am Singles Champion in addition to the 2013 SDTA Rookie of the Year.)

JS: You said once that racing flat track is like having the holeshot the whole time?AW: Well, pretty much the whole race it’s either you’re getting passed or

you’re doing the passing the whole race. It’s not like you can just run away with it and keep going because they’re still right behind you. You go to look back and they’re right there. Even though you’re in the lead, you make one mistake, the race is over because they don’t stop. They throw cautions and I had to tell myself because before when I would see the yellow flag, I would want to let off and slow down because there was a downed rider. I figured it was safer to go slower; it was just instinct of somebody going down and looking out for them, but it took me quite a few races to when I see a yellow flat to ignore it. That’s pretty much what you gotta do. The race is still going on even when there’s somebody down. If they’re not in the race line and it’s safe for the race to continue, then yeah.

JS: The difference between first and 40th is usually, like, half a second or something, right?AW: It’s tight. It’s the tightest racing I’ve ever been in. But I think that made me a better all around rider, for sure.

Editor’s note: i first spotted Andy Wallace at the Bartow hare scrambles earlier this season. Actually, it was his flat track bike that caught my eye as i wondered, “What’s that thing doing here?” i noticed some other people jocking “the framer,” too. i learned later that Andy drove from savannah, Georgia the night before to make it to Bartow just before sunrise. “i think it was like 6.5 hours,” he said. “i don’t think i slept at all.” he finished third in A 200 that day. from there, he introduced me to professional flat track racing and his love of riding anything on two wheels. After Andy won the A 200 class at this year’s samsula Enduro, i decided to find out what keeps him going, what he’s looking forward to next and if he prefers keeping it sideways more than racing in the woods.

JS: Where are you from originally? AW: Bonne Terre, Missouri. We used to go to St. Joe (State Park in Park Hill, Missouri.)

JS: What was your first motorcycle experience? AW: At the motocross track in Missouri with my best friend Cory Bohn. I couldn’t even use the clutch or anything but I rode BMX trails for as long as I can remember. I’m still pretty good at it.

JS: When you moved to Florida, you kept riding motocross?AW: Well, I met my friend Sean Daugherty at the Mini O’s in 2007. (Andy finished 8th overall in 450

Open C.) Sean was doing the whole mechanic thing. He wanted me to go do the Brooksville race with him. That was my first FTR race and I got a flat tire but I kept riding it. I rode with a rear flat the whole time and think I finished seventh or something. I was on my 450 so it had to have been like C Open with the yellow backgrounds. It was a challenge. I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I took a break, blew my bike up, then I got my 125 that I have now. I went back into the C class and won my first C 200 race and then I moved to B class. I think I won two or three of the B classes and I could have stayed in but I decided to move up myself because I just felt like it was the right thing. I felt as fast as them.

“the most important skill i would say is being able to work on my bike and get stuff done because if i had to take it to a shop and pay for it to get done, then i wouldn’t be where i am today because i don’t have the money to do that. ” - andy Wallace
