INTRODUCTION & HISTORY

In the spring of 1994, Benjamin Crump, Liza Park, and John Webbresearched and wrote the majority of the Ritual words, symbolism, andactions for the initiation ceremony. Throughout the initiation ceremony,

they incorporated documents written by and for many of Florida State’sleaders and the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Two years later, the Corporate Board of Directors made several smallamendments to incorporate the role of Distinguished Alumnus. In 2001,Fred Maglione, Liza Park and Scott Vedder developed the Spear NightCeremony based, in part, on the Initiation Ceremony.

The Alumni Event Director and Spear Night Alumni Committee areresponsible for the execution of the Spear Night Ceremony incoordination with the Student Group. This function may not be

CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT TALKING POINTS

STUDENT PRESIDENT:

I. WELCOME

!  Each one of you has proven yourself amongst your peers. Now youwill have to do it all over again, yet this time, it will be at a higherlevel. All of you are here because:

o  You’ve demonstrated more than leadership; you’ve shownvision.

o  You’ve shown more than dedication; you’ve shown devotion.o  More than a single focus, you’ve shown a wide range of

ability.o  More than a love for FSU, you’ve shown the loyalty, desire,

as well as the talent and drive to improve FSU.o  And you’ve shown more than the ability to lead, you’ve

shown the ability to listen and learn.

!  You have not just been tapped into a club or organization, this isBurning Spear, an Elite, close knit, diverse, and powerful group ofpeople that have formed together to serve only one purpose:

!  BETTER THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY.

!   There are many reasons Burning Spear formed, your presence is

one of those reasons and why all of you are here tonight.

ALUMNI 1:

I. HISTORY OF FSU

!  MAGLIONE MEMO- This is a memo written to newly tappedmembers by Burning Spear alumnus Fred Maglione. You areexpected to take it with you this evening, read it and study it, whilefor now we will highlight a few key segments.

o  History of other institutions and why FSU is Uniqueo  Phase Io  Phase IIo  Phase III

!  We believe the 4th Phase began in 1993. We joined the ACC, Wewon our 1st National Championship, our 1st Heisman Trophy,

Sandy D’Alemberte became our President, we started our firstcapital campaign, and Burning Spear was created.

!   The National Spotlight that you have taken for granted since yourarrival here did not exist before 1993. As was mentioned in thememo, we were a University without identity.

ALUMNI 2:

!  Burning Spear has single handedly changed student leadershipand life at FSU.

o  Before 1993 you had 4 distinct organizations that controlledleadership.

!  SGA!  Order of Omega!  Seminole Ambassadors!  Gold Key

o  By 1995 you had 3 organizations controlling campusleadership and one organization controlling those 3.

!  BURNING SPEARo  SGAo  IFC/PANHELLENIC/NPHCo  SAA

o  Now in 2013 the Burning Spear leadership has matured andspread throughout the world.

!  20 Student Body Presidents!  Our members are presidents or officers of Alumni

clubs around the world!  We have multiple members currently serving public

office!  We have alumni involved on every level of state

government!  We have developed, and control the only means to

support political candidates from FSU… Torchpac.

o  In the spring session of 2001, Burning Spear made its firstquantum leap into effecting statewide politics. Governor Jeb

Bush and his Republican legislature did not want theStudent Body President to have a vote on the newly createdUniversity Boards of Trustees. FSA failed in lobbying thechange of the language before the bill was drafted. SeveralBurning Spear members stepped in and coordinated alobbying effort over the next 3 months that succeeded inamending the language on the floor of the Florida Senate inthe final days of the 2001 session. One Senator was waving

a white handkerchief in surrender over the relentless assaultwe subjected them to. As a result of the legislation, Delmar Johnson, III, Burning Spear member, became the 1st everstudent member of the FSU Board of Trustees.

o  Burning Spear’s mission had just begun. We have started atthe root level, the student level, deeply entrenched at theState level, and are working towards our goal of continuingto serve FSU at the highest level.

ALUMNI 3:

II. HISTORY OF BURNING SPEAR

!   The concept of secret societies makes institutions great. Onalmost every great campus there is an organization that brings

competing elements together for a common good:o  Alabama – The Machineo  Florida – Blue Keyo  Yale – The Skull and Boneso  UVA – The 7 Societyo  Emory – DVSo  Berkeley – Order of the Golden Bearo  U.C. Davis – Sword and Sandalso   The Citadel – The Teno  Penn State – The Lions Pawo  Auburn – Spades

These societies have not been without their problems and theirgoals have not always been lofty. However, it is their overallmission and their effectiveness that ensures their survival. Theirgoal is to serve as the best means to create a desired end, whateverit may be.

All organizations have positive and negative images: A GreekSystem,A Business Fraternity, a defined Ethnic Student Association, aSports Club, or BURNING SPEAR.

!  Efforts to create a secret society at FSU have failed until now. Wewere formed because 3 individuals: Liza Park, Brecht Heuchan, and Benjamin Crump saw a void on campus that needed to befilled. It is because of their vision that you sit here today. In 1993no organization on campus was planning to promote Charlie Wardfor the Heisman Trophy. More than that however, there was noteven a group on campus that could step forward and do it

Page 10: Florida State University Burning Spear Night Manual

properly. Every club, association, or organization on campusalready had its defined mission and membership. Not one of themcould adequately unite and represent all parts of the student body, faculty, Alumni, and supporters of FSU.

!  Burning Spear was founded in the summer of ’93 as the CharlieWard for Heisman coalition. 14 Diverse Student leaders came

together to work towards this one goal. However, soon after theybegan they realize the power and influence they had. There was nored tape, political posturing, or tedious elections to go through. Just 14 individuals who knew how to work together efficientlytowards that common goal. 14 individuals who accomplished theirgoal, and did it well. By mid July, Burning Spear was a reality andplanning began to ensure it would be around for long after CharlieWard’s Number 17 football Jersey had been retired.

!  But why do Secret Societies make institutions great? You will beasked tonight to put aside your petty differences forever.Organizational conflicts, racial prejudices, ideological differences, and short sightedness, for the opportunity to be a part ofsomething special.

FSU needs leadership and vision during these trying times ofhigher education. There are huge issues that this institution willcontinue to face with state appropriations, leadership turnover andinevitable growth by our rival institutions throughout the state. How will FSU continue to grow on a 500-acre campus? What

happens if the University of Florida is granted preeminence in theState of Florida through additional appropriations? Why do ourBoosters, Foundation, and Alumni continually work against eachother despite the One FSU creation? How will President Barronnavigate FSU through conference expansion and re-alignment?Right now, at Florida State, we are on the verge of another greatchapter in the landscape of our university. Opportunities like thisonly come once in a great while.

The face of the student body is always changing! The face of ourcampus is changing! It is imperative that Burning Spear rises to

this occasion.

You are expected to think long-term about FSU in all decisions youmake. You have to put aside your differences and findcommonality. You must work together now on campus. You needto learn these skills now so you can get over your differences lateras Alumni and find a mechanism to come together as alums in aunified front.

ALUMNI 4:

III. INSIDE BURNING SPEAR

There are 4 major principles that guide each member of Burning

Spear. Leadership, Diversity, Loyalty, and Love. Along those tenetsare a set of rules that will govern the way you operate as a studentwithin Burning Spear.

!  WE ARE NOT A GROUP OF FRIENDS!  WE ARE ELITE!  WE ARE SECRETIVE!  WE ARE SUPPORTIVE!  WE DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY!  WE RUN LIKE A ‘FAMILY’

ALUMNI 3:We are not a group of friends

!  Friendships may grow out of membership. In fact when you speakwith alumni members they will tell you that some of their very bestfriends are fellow members.

!   There will be times when you will be angry or frustrated with one ifnot all members of this group. That will not prohibit you fromworking towards the mission.

!  You are expected to speak your mind out loud in front of the entiregroup or at the very least to any individual or individuals you have

problems with. Burning Spear is the forum we use to resolve ourdifferences-privately.

!   There will be no pettiness, backstabbing, or other bullshit when itcomes to other members of this group.

!  If you are let down by a member, you make it known. If you arefurious at a member, you make it known.

!  If you can’t approach a member with whom you have an issue, youtalk to the Student President. Immediately.

ALUMNI 1:We are Elite

!  We are not a fraternity or organization with over 250 members withwhom half you barely know or trust.

!  Student membership can never grow above 35. We are elite innumber, not attitude.

!  Our strength is that every member of this group can representevery other member at any time without question or hesitation.

Page 12: Florida State University Burning Spear Night Manual

Spear Night Manual – Adopted January 22, 2006 and amended on February 14, 2013

!   The word elitism might evoke an image of ego or closed-mindedness. Let it be known right now that that does not describeBurning Spear’s meaning of elite. We are elite because we aremore effective that way. We can’t work towards our mission if weare a slow moving mass. Our mission requires efficiency. We can’t

work towards our mission without trust. We can’t make adifference if we don’t have every one of our members contributinghis or her all. No organization can afford dead weight, especiallyan organization with a mission like ours.

ALUMNI 2:We are absolutely secretive

!  What is said here today, or in any other Burning Spear meeting is100% secret. This is not open to interpretation. Burning Spear is100% secret.

!  Breaking this vow of secrecy will result in your immediate removaland a potential lawsuit.

!  Your friends, family, roommates, brothers/sisters andgirl/boyfriends will not know when you are at a Burning Spearmeeting. If they find out and we find out that they know, you willbe removed, immediately and without question.

!  It is not glamorous to lead a secret life; in fact it can be verydifficult at times. Think ahead, think on your toes, and think fast. You are not here to receive a pat on the back, if you feel it’simportant for people to know what you do for Burning Spear, leavenow, because you are not here for glamour or glory.

STUDENT PRESIDENT:We are supportive

!  Like a family, we support our members before anyone else.!  You will never openly oppose any member of this organization for

the rest of your life. For instance: if another member is runningfor Congress, we can’t tell you how to vote, however, you will notcampaign against that member. You will not campaign for hisopponent either. This also is not open to interpretation.

!   That same rule applies to campus organizations and campus

leadership positions. For instance: no member will openly speakagainst any other member seeking admission into an organizationto which they belong. You are expected to help other members whoseek admission into campus organizations in which you are amember.

!  You are required to help all other members in their endeavors, andsimply put, always back each other’s play.

Page 13: Florida State University Burning Spear Night Manual

Spear Night Manual – Adopted January 22, 2006 and amended on February 14, 2013

!  A lack of support for your fellow members will result in yourimmediate removal.

!  You will never ever speak against a fellow member of BurningSpear in public. Doing so will result in immediate removal. Wecommand loyalty to a fault.

ALUMNI 4:We demand accountability

!   This is an alumni run corporation. In a short while you will havefull student membership in Burning Spear. However, you will nothave lifetime membership.

!  Your ability to prove yourself as a contributing member to BurningSpear’s mission will be monitored closely while you are a student. Think of your student membership as a test to earn lifetimemembership.

!  You do not receive full membership until you graduate. Yourstatus of full membership will be granted by the Corporate Boardby application, upon your graduation. Your membership can beterminated by the corporate board of directors at anytime betweennow and graduation.

!  As was mentioned earlier, Secret societies make institutions great. They make them great because petty differences are put aside fromthe time members are students until death. FSU has not become agreat institution yet because our alumni have been unable to putaside their petty differences and work towards the common goal: TO BETTER FSU.

!  You don’t have to go but ! mile from Westcott to the Capital to seehow well a Secret Society can work. The University of Florida’sBlue Key had recently dominated the Florida Legislature since the1940’s. The Blue Key connection allowed UF Alumni legislators toput aside their petty student differences and make sure that UFreceived the majority of the spoils. Why do you think FSU was stillplaying football in a 60,000 seat erector set in 1992? Why did UFreceive 1000’s of acres of land? Why do UF’s endowments towerover ours? The answer to all of these questions is Blue Key andtheir collaborative efforts within the system.

!  It has only been in the past 10 years that these gaps have begun to

close. We owe a great deal to former Head Football Coach BobbyBowden and the fact that FSU couldn’t be ignored anymore! Heenabled FSU to grow worldwide as being one of the most dominateand respect Universities nationwide. FSU became a householdname.

ALUMNI 1:PAY CLOSE ATTENTION HERE

!  Burning Spear is a priority. If you are the President of another majororganization on campus, Burning Spear will be as important.

Otherwise, Burning Spear is always more important. Always.!  You must attend no less than 80% of all Burning Spear meetings,

events, retreats, etc... Should you’re attendance in any semester fallbelow 80% you are automatically removed.

!  If you are late to a burning spear meeting, event, retreat, etc... youmay be fined or you may have that count as an absence.

!  Burning Spear can only effectively operate if each member gives everyother member the respect that he or she deserves.

!  Attendance is not flexible, you will be required to plan your entiresemester ahead of time and make sacrifices.

ALUMNI 4:We run like a Family

!  Burning Spear is not a democracy. _____________ is the President andthat means with few exceptions, what (she/he) says, goes. TheStudent President reports directly to the corporate Board of Directors, specifically the Chairman. _____________ is the Chairman of the Boardof Directors. A lot of times rulings she makes will not be hers, shemay not even support them, however, we are a corporation and we aregoverned by a Board of Directors.

!  In a very distant way, we are like the mafia. We protect our own and

our interests, we work efficiently, we work effectively, we do nothinglackadaisically, we do nothing to comprise the trust and integrity ofthe group, and we are elite.

ALUMNI 3:CLOSING

Before we go to the next step, there are two points we would like to make.We have drawn many comparisons between Burning Spear and othersecret societies. What we share is our closeness, small size, secrecy, anddevotion to working towards bettering an institution of higher learning.

Where we differ from most other secret societies is that in addition, ourstrength is derived from our diversity.

!  We are composed of Caucasians, African-Americans, Latinos, Asians, and combinations

!  We come from rich families, poor families, close families, andseparated families.

!  We are Greeks and independents.!  We are democrats, republicans, and independents.!  We are political SGA types and non-political SGA types.!  We are business majors, student-athletes, medical and law students,

communications, arts and sciences, and beyond.

This diversity allows us to unite the University community towards onecommon goal.

IT IS AT THIS POINT THAT WE ASK YOU TOOPEN THE ENVELOPES IN FRONT OF YOU

In it is a legal document, your membership agreement. Membershipagreements just like this one have been upheld in numerous courtdecisions. Confidentiality agreements are legal and binding. Please takea minute now, read the document and sign and date below.

If you choose not to sign the agreement, that is OK, one of us will escort you back to the Westcott fountain and you can continue on your way.

* ANY QUESTIONS *

ALUMNI 1:

From here you will embark on what will hopefully become one of themost important aspects of your life. Over the next 6 weeks you willcontinue to be educated on FSU, Burning Spear, and what’s expected of

you. As the newest Spear class, Class , you all will be sharing innumerous special experiences together. We expect you all to do whateverit takes to get to know one another and we expect you to respect oldermembers of Burning Spear. You must trust each other, and you mustrespect each other’s opinions. It’s OK to disagree with each other.However….

!  If you are unable to respect someone with a differing opinion than you on an issue that you hold dear, we don’t want you here.

!  If you are unable to listen to someone’s views with an open mindand hear them out, we don’t want you here.

!  If you can’t conduct yourself like an adult in every situation, wedon’t want you here.

!  If you feel that you can’t represent every other member, we don’twant you here.

No one is given any slack, we are all equals. Discipline and toughdecisions in this group are not based on politics, race, gender, religion, orbeliefs. They are based on each individual’s ability to contribute to the

mission. They are based on each individual’s character, ethics, andresponsibility.

Make no mistake, Burning Spear will be the most intensely trying, demanding, and difficult thing you will do. Yet membership in Burning

Spear will also be incredibly special, rewarding and worthwhile. Therewards outweigh the costs a hundred fold.

You are expected to rise above. You have now elevated yourself to ahigher level. From this night on, you will never be able to return to thelevel you were at and find true satisfaction. Knowing this can be difficultfor some. Each of you will have issues or prejudices from your previouslives, from that lower level. Leave them there. You are above that now.If you allow them to effect this group, you will return to where you were. There is no margin for error. Once you’ve been returned to that lowerlevel, knowing what exists above, you will struggle. We’ve seen it

happen. Living at this higher level demands a great deal. It is not easy.Hopefully, living at this level will push you to better yourself farther than you would have otherwise. I know it has me. It is our feeling that eachof you are destined for greatness in some way. Go after it, work hard tofind it, work harder to keep it, and never forget where you came from.

Your membership in this organization will open a lot of doors that mayhave been closed before. Get to know the alumni, learn how they canhelp you, seek out their advice, and heed it. Tell us what you want, yoursuccess means Burning Spear’s success. Opportunities already exist; butit is up to you to find them as you will get out of it what you put into it!

Who dare to touch the sacred Spear, for what fool would dare totouch a burning spear?

EXTERNAL VICE PRESIDENT:

Does he that dare grasp the Burning Spear understand that to feelthe heat is to submit to the spirit of the Burning Spear? Does heunderstand the spirit of Burning Spear is the spirit of family, thespirit of humility and most importantly, the spirit of self-obligation,which is the binding power of a promise, a sense of duty, thusentering into a contract with his own conscious.
