So much for fixed election dates. The next federal election could just as easily end up in 2020 as in 2023.

It all depends on how Justin Trudeau responds to the message delivered to him by nearly all of Canada except Toronto. Saskatchewan and Alberta delivered a tough message, electing not one Liberal; the Bloc resurgence was a tough touché as well; but where it really got personal was in Vancouver-Granville. Trudeau’s former attorney-general, Jody Wilson- Raybould, placed the PM on notice by winning back her seat as an independent. Governing will become a challenge for the new Liberal minority, but not an in-surmountable one if lessons are learned. Conservative support may be needed for the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline project, and a significant slice of the NDP platform will wind its way into the Liberals’ agenda for any hope of passing their own legislation. It is clear that this Riding is seriously blue. Blue lake, blue sky, blue Party. And it is also clear that Canadians are not prepared to support a hard right pop-ulist Party like the brand new PPC. Cindy Derkaz would have served well as a constituency representative. She finished a strong second in 2015, but that was not meant to be in 2019. This Riding is a safe one for the Conservatives, but nothing is wholly safe during these times. It will be interesting to see if Trudeau rises to the occasion by listening to all Canadians to earn sustaining support. n

The first season of the Downtown Saturday morning market was

such a success that it’s going to continue into the winter. It will run from 10 to 1 on Ross Street plaza until Nov. 9 with the exception of Nov. 2 when Alexander Street will be closed to traffic for the big Treble Clef reveal. (Best photos will be from Alexander.) After Nov. 9, the market will head indoors to First United Church hall, now known as ‘Village Hall’.

Thank you to my neigh-bour who chose to sell his acreage in town to

a family instead of developers. As a senior I enjoy looking out my kitchen window and seeing the mead-ow across the street grow green in the Spring, red and gold in the Fall. I will still be able to enjoy the horse and donkey walking down the hill, grazing on fresh grass... and now children are playing as well. And I do not have to maintain any of it! I can relax again knowing I can continue to delight in the ever chang-ing scene. My neighbours walking our street are equally thrilled. Why can we not allow the islands of green to continue to thrive in our city instead of turning everything over to wall-to-wall developments?Suzanne Hebert, Salmon Arm

Barry Dick took out his first gold

claim at age 15 in the 1970s and has been involved with precious metals ever since. The president ofUrsa Major Gold, Silver & Coin will set up at the Fifth Avenue Seniors Activity Centre on Sept. 26 and 27. “People bring in all kinds of inter-esting items,” says Dick about his com-pany’s Pre-cious Metals road shows. “For the most part it is a broken or old chain, unloved jewellery, a single earring, and out of fashions items like charm bracelets. We also accept dental gold.” He is also seeing more silver flatware sets, however, these must say ‘sterling’ on the handles. Ursa Major is able to cut out one or two middlemen by dealing direct with a smelter. The company an-alyzes gold, silver, coins and paper money while you watch. The prcise testing process undertak-en is explained in detail. Coins with numismatic value are set aide from those with a ‘melt’ value. n
