OPENSKIES FLIGHT TRAINING
Beyond expectations
Openskies Flight Training, incorporated by a Team of Directors, including M.D.H Fernando,
Chairman/Managing Director, Kushla Fernando , Dinithi Fernando and Dineth Fernando on 08th
of August 2008 under the Sri Lanka Companies act and approved by the Board of Investment is
aimed at delivering high quality flight training programs for Local and International Students.
Approved by Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka. Openskies offers students the opportunity to
follow many flight training programs including Private Pilot Licence, Commercial Pilot Licence
and Instrument Rating
Located in the heart of Panadura, Openskies have a purpose made Ground Training Facility which
will house the students for their initial training period while they undergo the Ground Training.
The flight Training Centre located in the Katukurunda Airforce base comprise a Large Custom
Made Hanger, one of the youngest Hangers situated in the aerodrome having enough space to
house 3 Single Engine Aircraft and 1 Multi Engine Aircraft.
Openskies aims to keep an Open Mind and allow students to gain the best experience possible
within their training period while not compromising on safety. Hence students have the opportu-
nity to fly to many destinations during their training period including Weerawila, Koggala,
Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Minneriya, China Bay and Students also get the opportunity to fly to
Katunayake and Ratmalana airports for the Instrument Training phase of their Training.
Openskies Flight Training is a Sister Company of Australian New Zealand Education Consultants
(pvt) Limited who have been in the Student Promotion Business Since 1994 and is approved by
the Australian High Commission of Sri Lanka to grant the Pre Visa Approval for Australian
Student Visa’s on behalf of Australian High Commission Colombo.

Openskies, a school with a new thought, aims to provide the student pilots the best possible
experience on their journey to be career pilots. With a fleet of well equipped aircrafts and a
dedicated team behind the student, flying is made easier and safer than ever before.
The climate in Sri Lanka is ideal for Flight Training with varied weather conditions year around.
From very calm days to foggy rainy days in the monsoon season the students gets the best
experience to learn the different techniques associated with Flying.
Private Pilot License (Aeroplane)
If you aspire to take the skies to your limits a Private Pilot License is just the license for you. A
Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or a Private Pilot Certificate, is a license that permits the holder to
act as the pilot of an aircraft . A PPL allows you to fly in day or night under Visual Meteorological
conditions with your friends and relatives. A PPL can be considered your first license towards an
career in aviation.
Course Contents
Private Pilot License Training is divided into two phases as Ground Training and Flight Training Phases
During the Ground Theory Phase the students undergo a 10 Week Ground Training Program to prepare the candidate
to sit for the Technical examinations set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka. The ground theory conducted
in Openskies is in Part with Civil Aviation Requirements as well as European Standards thereby candidates will have
no problem in sitting for conversions anywhere in the World.

Method of Delivery
Ground Theory is delivered in many forms and methods to help different students with different standards of learning
gain the best knowledge. Primary Method of Delivery include Classroom Lectures conducted by Civil Aviation
Approved Ground and Flight Instructors with years of experience in the industry. Students are also exposed to a series
of computer based learning methods and self studies to better improve the students knowledge and understanding.
Openskies Believes candidates should get a sound knowledge of the other parts of the industry as well to have a
deeper understanding and a mutual respect for the other members who make flight possible. Therefore periodically
students get the option to visit the Air Traffic Control Centre, Meteorological Service Department and Engineering
Facilities to understand the effort that goes to make Aviation a Safe and Interesting Field.
Flight Training Phase
On completion of the ground theory students are transferred to the Flight Training Base either at Katukurunda or
Ratmalana to undergo Flight Training. The Flight Training for PPL consists of 45 Hours of Flight Training which
includes General Handling, Cross Country Flying, Basic Instrument Flying and Night Flying.
In order to obtain the Private Pilot License students should meet the following requirements stipulated by the Civil
Aviation.:
At least 40 Hours of total Flying Experience
At Least 10 Hours of Flight Experience done as Pilot in Command of which at least
05 Hours of Solo Cross Country Flying should be performed
At Least 05 Hours of Basic Instrument Flying
At Least 05 Hours of Night Flying if the Night Rating is Sought.
The Flight Operations Department of Openskeis will monitor the student progress
and guide the students to make certain the above requirements are met at the
end of the 45 Hours Flight Training Course.
Duration of the Course
The Duration for Full Time students will be normally 6 months provided
adequate weather conditions are available.

Integrated Commercial Pilot License with

the aviation industry,
Course Contents
The Course Contents for the CPL/IR consists of 750 Hours of ATPL Theoretical Instructions conducted at the Ground
Training Centre in Panadura along with 180 Hours of Flight Training done at Katukurunda and Ratmalana Students
may either join as ab-initio pilots with no previous flying or ground experience or as PPL Entrants for those who hold
PPL Ground School and/or Flight Training. Different Recognition of Prior Learning skills apply and students are
required to communicate with Chief Flight Instructor and Chief Ground Instructor to confirm the actual credits that
can be approved. The ATPL Ground Theory is divided in 15 Subjects thought over 3 Semesters as below

Training which includes General Handling, Cross Country Flying, Instrument Flying and Night Flying and Twin
Engine Endorsement.
Openskies Flight Training Phase is divided as follows
180 Hours of Total Flight Time during which
45 Hours of Flight Training for Private Pilot License
135 Hours of Single Engine Flight Training for CPL/IR
8 Hours of Twin Engine Flight Training for Multi Engine Endorsement on Completion of CPL/IR
In order to obtain the Integrated CPL/IR License students should meet the following requirements stipulated by the

At least 150 hours of Total Flying Time
At least 70 hours as Pilot in Command
At least 50 Hours of Cross Country as Pilot in Command
At Least 40 Hours of Instrument Flying

Duration of Integrated CPL/IR Course (PPL + CPL + IR + ATPL Ground Theory) is 1.5 Years for Ab-Initio Students

PC BASED SIMULATOR TRAINING
Openskies believes that every student should have the opportunity to
master their flying skills with the ability to practice their lessons learnt at
their own phase without compromising safety. Therefore we have
provided students with a Simulator Lab where they can practice the flight
training lessons performed specially in the stages of Instrument Flying
where they could use the assistance of our In House Flight Instructor to
practice the actual lessons before and after the real flight.
Students are also put on simulator for the Ground Theory part of
Navigation and Communication where students get the opportunity to
perform radio calls with a Instructor using Online Air Traffic Control
Programs where Instructor can monitor students position real time and
provide air traffic clearances.

BY CIVIL AVIATION AUTHERITY AND ANY TRAINING GIVEN IS
NOT LOGGED AND SOLEY GIVEN FREE OF CHARGE FOR

STUDENT SERVICES
Accommodation Facilities
Accommodation options are available for both Local Students and
International Students, within close proximity to the Ground Training
Centre. Openskies Crew Shuttle also stops at the Accommodation Facility
to pick up students on the way to the flight training.
Openskies Accommodation Consists of a Spacious House with 2 Bed
Rooms with Attached Toilets and 2 Bed Rooms with Shared Toilets.
Equipped with 3 Parking Spaces and plenty of space to roam around
students would be comfortable to carry on their studies. A Common
Lounge and Kitchen Facilities are available for students who would like
to cook their own meals. For those who prefer to eat outside, plenty of
eating options including Srilankan Rice and Curry, Indian Meals and
many continental styles as well.
Airport Pickup and Orientation
For International Students, Openskies provides free of charge pickup from
the airport and also helps students get themselves well adjusted to
Srilanka including tour around the local training area and also assigning a
student support office who will be in charge of making sure students stay
in Sri Lanka is a pleasant experience.
