Coaching, Captains & Managers
As I begin my 35th year as Chairman of Great Melton Cricket Club I often stop and reflect on how far we’ve come and what a roller-coaster ride it has been as we’ve gone from a one-team club playing on rented parks pitches with a squad of about 15 players to the huge juggernaut of a club consisting of 8 senior and 6 junior teams with a home ground to rival the best in the county.
There have been many successes and failures along the way and sometimes the responsibility of guiding the club along the right paths has weighed quite heavily but, all these years on, I am grateful of all the support I’ve received and proud of what has been achieved from very small beginnings.
The photo albums in the pavilion and the end-of-season statistics’ booklet together paint a vivid picture.
How many other clubs could capture their entire history in that way, tracking 43 years from that first midweek game at Reepham, to include accurate player records from 1974 to 2017 as well as the previous season’s averages?
It is also remarkable that Tony Alborough, Mike Phoenix, Chris Elliott, Matt Clarke, Simon Woods, Leo de Salis, Lee Whiddett, Mally Howard and myself – players in the ‘top 12’ of the appearances’ list and who were part of the earlier history of the club - are still very much involved.
All clubs need a solid core of real, loyal clubmen and we’ve certainly got ours but, while it is good to reflect on, and glory in, the past nothing stays the same and clubs like ours have had to evolve and change to keep up with a changing cricket world.
And the winds of change are certainly blowing! For the first time we have a Vice Chairman, Phil Bugg, a new Secretary, Richard Wood, and a new Membership Secretary, Sallyann Weston.
Some of our younger members: George Bunn, Ryan Hayward, Marcus Mawby, Nick Mackenzie, James Robb, Connor Stearman have stepped up to the plate and taken on greater responsibility.
The ladies are on the march and, at a recent Junior Committee Meeting, there were more females than males.
In addition, Max and Matt Rushton are embracing new technology and quietly encouraging the rest of us to get on board with it.
And we finally have the nets! After battling for many years with worn-out practice facilities, all our efforts paid off when the E.C.B. agreed to grant us £15,000, the final piece in the financial jigsaw.
As you will all have seen the nets have been installed at a cost in excess of £30,000 and, although we’ve had the odd teething problem, they will enable us to improve the coaching and practice experience for all our members.

Words From The Chairman - Cont
We are extremely grateful to our President, Nick Evans-Lombe, for allowing us the extra land on which they are installed and a huge thank-you is due to the E.C.B., Norwich Organ Donors’ Association, The Saracen’s Fund, the Andy Seeley Estate, the Aviva Community Fund and some very generous Vice-Presidents, parents and supporters. So it’s all systems go then for 2018, with Clubmark re-accreditation complete, improved facilities, new (younger) committees and the First Team – with Richard Waddell returning as skipper - back in Division 2 of the Norfolk Cricket Alliance following their promotion last year.
Good luck to Richard and all our senior captains, junior managers, coaches and all others who volunteer at the club. It’s a big commitment.
We are particularly grateful to our groundsmen, Mike Phoenix and Grenville Ireland – without them we would really struggle so finding a bit more voluntary help with the ground is one of our priorities.
My final plea, as always, is ‘Get involved!’ As well as on the ground, we are particularly keen to recruit volunteers to help with the bar (especially on Friday nights), the barbecue and with fundraising.
Let me know if you can help out in any way but, to all who play, organize, spectate or support, have a great summer.
Steve

Club Records
Great Melton CC was formed in 1974, and for the first four seasons played evening friendly and cup matches, all on opponents’ grounds, generally with borrowed kit. In 1977 the Club won its first piece of silverware, The Shropham Cup. In 1978 the Club secured a home pitch at Eaton Park and a year later moved to Browick Road Recreation ground in Wymondham, entering the newly formed Division 6 of the Norfolk Cricket League in 1980. A return to Eaton Park in 1985 began a four year success period, with Melton winning Divisions 4, 3 and 2 in consecutive seasons, becoming Champions of Norfolk League Div 1 in 1988. Between 1985 and 1990, the Club also won the Norfolk League Cup three times. The A team was formed in 1986, initially with a full Sunday fixture list.
For two seasons the Club played at Bowthorpe, whilst a new facility was being prepared at Melton Park. That was formally opened on 30th Aug 1993. Now, thanks to 24 seasons of dedicated and fantastic work by Groundsman Mike Phoenix, ably assisted by Grenville Ireland, Melton Park is rightly regarded as one of the most scenic grounds in the county.
The picturesque scene was, however, devastated during August 2016 as the iconic oak , which stood majestically within the boundary for 22 seasons, succumbed to the ravages of time, and unfortunately shed three large branches.
The B team entered the Norfolk League in 2004, followed by the C team in 2007 as the Club developed and grew, and in 2009 the aim of playing in the Norfolk Alliance was realised with both the 1st and A teams making their debuts that season. The 1st team won Div 4 in 2010, and Div 3 in 2011, before being promoted to the Club’s highest ever level – Norfolk Alliance Div 1 – in 2013. The A team completed 2014 as the only Norfolk Alliance side to remain unbeaten all season. 2018 sees the 1st team return to Alliance Div 2, with the aim of establishing themselves at this level. In 1997 current Chairman, Steve Phoenix, began coaching juniors at Melton Park and, in the 20 years since then, the junior section has grown to be one of the biggest in the County with a full coaching programme and junior teams at all levels from U9 to U19. Along the way the club’s junior sides have contested County finals, won the Terry Moore Trophy on 2 occasions and the South Norfolk Community League at various age groups The Club Tour returned in May 2017, as a sorry band of ‘escaped convicts’ descended on Watford. There have been a number of tours over the years to different parts of the country, with themes from 70’s to Vikings, Morris Men to Super Heroes, Cowboys to Pirates. In 2014 the Club celebrated its 40th anniversary with a beer festival, which has become an annual event with live music and overnight camping, and forms a great mid season occasion to toast all that is good within the Club. 2016 saw a warm summer, which meant that the 6-a-side Big Bash made a very welcome return as an end of season curtain closer. Other clubs have recently jumped on the 6 a Side bandwagon, so new fundraising and social ideas are sought. In 2017 the Club purchased a ‘new’ ride on mower and this winter has seen the building of a fantastic new double net facility, both of which will hopefully prove extremely beneficial for Great Melton as we enter our 25th Season at Melton Park.
