COURSE INTRODUCTION

OBJECTIVES

∙ Gain understanding of theories of human behavior and interior environments to provide a unique, comfortable, and efficient interior environment.∙ Understand the relationship between the human feelings while experiencing and responding to the interior spaces.∙ Learn how to create original work and understand how to incorporate the ideas of others in a proper way.∙ Introduce the process of design problem solving, using graphic drawings as a means of representation, and review basic design concepts and terms.∙ Develop analytical skills, including: program analysis, site analysis, building analysis, and understand the relationship between them.∙ Cultivate competent schematic design skills, including: concept/design guidance development, the ability to visualize concepts through sketching perspectives, plans, sections, and elevations, and by building physical study models that explore spatial composition, space planning, and preliminary exploration of interior finishes.∙ Introduce design development skills through the production of layout of furniture, fixtures, and equipment.∙ Apply principles of lighting and materials to create an effective interior environment.∙ Strengthen the ability to express ideas clearly in oral presentations, critiques, and interviews. Improve the ability to communicate clearly in writing project programs, concept statements, reports, and research papers.

STUDY IMAGES DESIGN PRINCIPLES + ELEMENTS USED

Elements• Line: repetition of vertical lines• Shape: geometric form • Direction: vertical• Size: by reducing the size of the rock, the eye automatically focuses on the dominant shape• Texture: rock- rough; structure- smooth• Color: contrast between rock and structure• Value: the eye is immediatly drawn to the area of maximum tonal contrast

Principles• Balance: A dark rock balances the lighter toned large shape. The darker a shape the heavier it appears• Gradation: Gradation from warm to cool and dark to light produce aerial perspective• Repetition with variation• Contrast in scale• Dominance by vertical lines. It gaines tension and interest• Visual unity

DESIGN CONCEPT

To translate a design inspiration into an original model incorporating repetition, contrast, and direction taken from the study model without reproducing other designer’s concepts. The design will promote repetition with the bass woods and wire, contrast between the black and wood color, and the direction being vertical.

VIEWS

CONCLUSION:

The most important views are located on the North side of the house with views to the ocean and beyond. The spaces with views to the North side can use the windows as focal points for the space. The other views mostly consist of vegetation and street views.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS

DESCRIPTION:

Structure: Structural Walls (no columns)

Envelope: Block

Windows: Vertical

CONCLUSION:

The house has a simple envelope of load bearing structural walls allowing for an open floor plan and flexible design in the interior. The vertical windows bring in plently of sunlight without using an excessive amount of horizonatal sq. footage.

Page 26: FIU ∙ INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE ∙ IND 2238 ∙ RESIDENTIAL ... · ∙ Cultivate competent schematic design skills, including: concept/design guidance development, the ability to visualize

MEASUREMENTS TOTAL SQUARE FOOTAGE: 6000 sq. ft

CONCLUSION: The spaces are based on a consistant square grid. This allows for easier programming and important for avoiding narrow and uncomfortable spaces.

ZONINGPublic spaces

Private spaces

CONCLUSION:

The ground floor consists of mostly larger public spaces while the second floor consists of more divided private spaces. This creates an important distinction for the design of the house in combining the public spaces and separating the private spaces.

DESIGN GUIDELINESThe home will be an open floor plan warm atmosphere where friends and family feel comfortable as well as the home owners.

There is an important connection between the interior and exterior which is reflected with cooking and social events.

Entertainment is important to the family as well as having their own privacy which is the main reason why the master bedroom, dog/family room are on the second floor.

An easy flow is throughout the home to make the user go around the home with no difficulty.

The family owner’s needs are exemplified throughout the house such as having the fitness room for yoga, an office for reading and writing, a large kitchen and a bbq area for cooking, entertainment areas for friends and family gatherings, a dog/ family room for Bongo and Mr. and Mrs. Jones, and a herb garden foraromatherapy.

CONCEPT STATEMENTCreate a warm atmosphere that conveys the feeling of comfort and openess that pulls you from one space to the next smoothly. This is achieved through an open and flowing arrangement of spaces and the use of earthtone colors and textures that invoke a sense of connection.
