The training courses listed are designed to help volunteers, coaches and school staff develop the confidence and skills needed to deliver physical activity and sport to school aged children. This brochure contains information on a wide range of sports specific and generic coach education courses provided directly by East Lothian Council’s Healthy Living Service and national governing bodies. East Lothian Healthy Living Service encourage all course participants to follow up training with a block of practical activity or assist with the delivery of an activity dependant on the level of course.

The Funky Factor uses alternative activities and fun games to encourage children to develop a positive attitude to health and fitness. A continuation from Funky Fitness this programme also has a resource of 7 pre-written lesson plans and appeals to volunteers or coaches of any standard. The Funky Factor aims to increase knowledge and wellbeing in a relaxed and fun setting.

GIRLS ON THE GO! P5-S2 16+ FREE HM

The Girls On The Go! Programme targets P5 – S2 girls, and aims to encourage them to adopt a more active lifestyle at an important stage in their lives, by offering activities that appeal to young girls. The resource contains 7 pre-written lesson plans covering a range of activities such as netball, cheerleading,hockey, aerobics, this allows minimal preparation time for volunteers/ leaders. All you need is enthusiasmand passion to motivate young girls to participate in physical activity.

BIKEABILITY LEVEL 1 & 2 16+ FREE HM

Bikeability Level 1 is a fun cycling skills programme targeting the P5 age group to improve their handlingskills and confidence. Bikeability Level 2 is targeted at P6-7 age groups, it introduces on road cycling and focuses more on the understanding of the rules of the road for cyclists, common road and traffic situations as well as vital decision making skills needed to cycle on the road.

Outdoor Adventures training will provide the chance to gain more ideas and information to allow childrento become more active outdoors. A stimulating programme full of adventure and excitement it is easy to deliver and contains 7 pre-writtenlesson plans to enable minimal preparation time for volunteers/ leaders. This makes it ideally suited to volunteers and in particular those who have never worked with children in a physical activity setting before. Designed to capture and hold the children’s attention, each lesson has a specific theme that allowsthe group to use their imagination and enhance their active experience. The lesson plans are structured to encourage the development of movement competency, creative learning and cooperative play throughvarious games and activities.

Junior JogScotland is an introductory course to promote jogging. It uses fun games to encourage childrento get involved in physical activity. The Coaching Assistant Award will provide prospective coaches with an introduction to coaching athleticsvia a range of run, jump and throw skills and athletics activities. To support the multi-event approach to developing athletics, Coaching Assistants will be expected to support sessions that develop running, jumpingand throwing activities. The course is focused on the inital stages of the athlete development pathway.

COACH IN RUNNING FITNESS 18+ £350 SA

The Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF) programme is designed for those who want to get involved in coaching runners over the age of 12 who take part in non track based activities e.g. road, fell, cross country or multi terrain events. The course will provide coaches with an introduction to coaching knowledge and skills relating to running. During the programme, candidates will be asked to consider the needs of individuals who have a range of fundamental movement skills regardless of their chronological age. CiRF coaches will work with runners of all abilities and interests, including those new to the sport, returning to the sport or competitive runners.

COACHING ATHLETES WITH A DISABILITY 16+ £50 SA

The Coaching Athletes with a Disability workshop has been designed for coaches interested or alreadyworking with athletes with a disability and will be delivered by leading Scottish Disability Sport and UKA coaches, Janice Eaglesham and Ian Mirfin. The workshop will cover aspects of disability awareness, communication, classification for competition, competition structures and opportunities for practical ‘hands on’ coaching.

The Getting Started award is basketballscotland’s introductory level leadership award. The award focuseson coaching beginners and young players, with a view to introducing them to basketball. During eachcourse candidates will be continually assessed and given feedback on their knowledge of introducing individual skills.

This is the basic level of coaching qualification for those who wish to commit to coaching basketball. The course provides each candidate with the basic knowledge of basketball and coaching skills and will enable the holder to assist a fully qualified Level 2 Coach.On successful completion of the Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Basketball, candidates should be able to:Demonstrate an ability to safely organise and supervise basketball activities, including group coaching and using pre-planned coaching session cards. WOMEN’S ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS UKCC LEVEL 2 16+ £520 SG

The UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) is a national initiative to endorse coach education programmes,across sports throughout the UK. UKCC Level 2 will allow candidates to lead a Session in a coaching environment.Women’s Artistic Gymnastics is probably the best-known branch of the sport and is one of the biggestcrowd pleasers at the Olympic Games. It is an exciting, aesthetic, yet extremely demanding discipline incorporating vault, asymmetric bars, beam and floor.This course is available to any coaches holding a UKCC level 1 qualification in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, Men’s Artistic Gymnastics or General Gymnastics. To achieve the full award candidates must complete the following:• Full attendance at all 5 days of course delivery• Completion of mentored tasks• Completion of log book• Successful completion of practical and theory assessment.

CHOREOGRAPHY MODULES 16+ £120 SG

Module 3 – Dance, Music and Movement - For those interested in developing festival gymnastics focusingon, themes, music, floor patterns & movement and costume.Module 4 – Showtime Choreography – This module will help you to get the very best from your displaygroup through focusing on dance styles, Laban, expression, key dance steps and creative choreography.This is a two day course and costs £120. The Pre-requisite for this course is a UKCC L1 in any discipline.This course is a mainly Practical, however will contain some Theory elements. All coaches will be requiredto take part in the practical sessions. It is essential that your attire is appropriate for practical sessions, i.e.tracksuit bottoms and t-shirt/sweatshirt and trainers. We would advise that you do not wear jewellery; you will also need to bring water.

RYTHMIC GYMNASTICS UKCC LEVEL 2 16+ £520 SG

The UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) is a national initiative to endorse coach education programmes,across sports throughout the UK. UKCC Level 2 will allow candidates to lead a Session in a coaching environment.Rhythmic Gymnastics is one of the Olympic disciplines of gymnastic. It develops grace, coordination,agility and artistry. In this graceful, elegant and balletic discipline gymnasts perform routines on a floorsquare (13m x 13m) to music using hand apparatus: ropes, hoops, balls, clubs and ribbons.This course is available to coaches with a UKCC Level 1 qualification in Rhythmic gymnastics.To achieve the full award candidates must complete the following:• Full attendance at all 5 days of course delivery• Completion of mentored tasks• Completion of log book• Successful completion of practical and theory assessment.

SPORTS SPECIFIC TRAINING COURSES: GYMNASTICS

MEN’S ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS FAST TRACK UKCC LEVEL 1 16+ £65 SG

Men’s Artistic gymnastics covers six pieces of apparatus, each different to the other, requiring a combination of strength, mobility, endurance, flexibility, body control and co-ordination. The MA Fast Trackis an add on module for coaches who already hold a UKCC L1 in General or Women’s Artistic. On theseprevious qualifications coaches will have covered Floor Vault and High Bar. This add on module allowscoaches to gain more knowledge in the Men’s specific apparatus; Parallel Bars, Pommel Horse and Rings.This course is available to any coaches holding a UKCC Level 1 qualification in Women’s Artistic Gymnas-tics or General Gymnastics. Coaches will be signed off on individual modules allowing them to take newly learnedskills to the competition floor. Technical modules are available to all Women’s Artistic coaches with the new UKCC education pathway at level 2 as well as cycle club coaches. Technical Modules are available to Level Women’s Artistic coaches as an opportunity for Continuous Professional Development. It is also compulsory to have completed all technical modules within your chosen discipline before accessing UKCC level 3 (coming soon).

A disability gymnastics programme has been in place at British Gymnastics since 1985. Previously known as GMPD; (Gymnastics & Movement for People with Disabilities) it now has the new name of 'DisabilityGymnastics'. The disability gymnastics programme ensures that gymnastics is adapted to meet the needsof each gymnast. Through the delivery of disability gymnastics, coaches can enable all disabled gymnaststo achieve their full potential, focusing on what they can do, not on what they can't do. From fundamental movement activity to elite gymnastics skills, disability gymnastics has something exciting, fun and engaging for all disabled people to enjoy; it is also widely recognised as providing manyphysical and social benefits for participants, such as developing increased coordination skills and buildingconfidence. Disability gymnastics is a far more recognisable and inclusive title for this exciting programme.It also follows the social model terminology for disability, which is socially acceptable and truly reflects theinclusive nature of the programme.This course is available to any coaches holding a Level 1 qualification.To achieve the full award candidates must complete the following:• Full attendance at both days of course delivery• Successful completion of practical assessment which is ongoing throughout the course.

Tumbling is a characterised by the complex, swift and rhythmical succession of acrobatic bounding from hands to feet, feet to hands or even feet directly back onto feet. A tumbling pass may be over in a matter of seconds and is performed on a tumbling track that is 25 meters in length.The UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) is a national initiative to endorse coach education programmes,across sports throughout the UK. East Lothian Council recognises the valuable contributionto the development of sport and recreation made bycoaches and officials, and support is available to thoseworking in a voluntary capacity to enable these individuals to continue to improve their qualificationsand to widen their experience for the benefit of localsportspeople.

This grant scheme is open to all clubs in East Lothianthat are affiliated to the appropriate governing body of sport. Grants will be made retrospectively and applications should be submitted on completion of the course for which assistance is being requested.Grants are based on 50% of course fees, accommodation costs and travelling expenses up to a maximum of £175.

SportScotland also offer a subsidy of 50% up to £150for UKCC Level 1 coaching awards. SportScotland offersubsidy to Level 1 coaches only from sports that havesigned up to the UKCC framework.

East Lothian Council will offer 25% retrospective funding and SportScotland will offer 50% retrospectivefunding for UKCC Level 1 coaching awards only. A candidate can therefore apply for up to 75% of the cost of a UKCC Level 1 from both organisations.
