CATHERINE COOK SCHOOL 3

Dear Friends,

Now in my tenth year of service to the school, I continue to look to our future with incredible

optimism. Once again, we are experiencing record enrollment. Our primary institutional

commitment is to ensure that the academic program we offer is of the highest quality

for our students. As a path to achieve this commitment, we go to great lengths to hire the

most qualified employees, maintain a rich array of employee benefits, support professional

development opportunities, and adopt best practice, current-century curricula. These are the

parts of our program that philanthropy makes possible for our students.

Thanks to the generosity of many of our parents, we are in a virtually

new physical space. The additional space has been well received by our

students and our faculty. We now have the room to create and properly

display special projects.

In addition, we are continuing to explore current century learning concepts

of design thinking, making, and innovation. The AV Studio and the IDEA

Lab are new and exciting program components that are causing a positive

buzz in the region. We are very excited about the new learning opportunities

this expansion has provided for our students. It makes me very proud and

grateful to the many families who have been generous with their time and

their financial support of REACH: Campaign for the Catherine Cook School.

Armed with talented teachers and administrators, supportive parents, and a

hard-working Board of Trustees, I am eager to embrace the future, appreciate

the successes, and work diligently on any challenges that lie ahead. What more important work is

there than building a firm foundation for the future of our children? I sincerely hope as you read

this Annual Report that you, too, will see evidence of a vibrant learning community willing to do

the important work necessary to make Catherine Cook what school should be.

Warmly,

Dr. Michael B. Roberts

Head of School

For the past five years, the American School Foundation of Guadalajara (ASFG) has sent students to Catherine Cook each winter. The visiting students are housed with selected families and are treated to many of the sights, sounds, and tastes Chicago has to offer. This year, after these successful hosting experiences, the Catherine Cook Middle School selected six students to attend classes and cultural events at ASFG in Guadalajara, Mexico for one week in May.

Accompanied by Music teacher Mr. Wellman, our students traveled to Guadalajara and were greeted by their host families. Throughout the week they participated in many activities including outdoor sports, classes (some taught almost entirely in Spanish), meals with their host families, and sightseeing in the historic city center.

On Monday morning Mr. Wellman and the Catherine Cook students met at ASFG. Students delighted in the sprawling campus, soccer fields, and green areas. Students shadowed their hosts as they went from class to

class, separated from each other except during passing periods. Mr. Wellman gained a unique perspective as a teacher observing the high school theater department, choral classes, and middle school concert band in action.

ASFG saved the most special experience for last, as the Catherine Cook students and 30 ASFG students went to a kindergarten in the neighboring town of Tlaquepaque to deliver gifts and snacks to the underserved school children. According to Mr. Wellman, “The Catherine Cook community should be extremely proud in sending the six ambassadors of goodwill, scholarship, and culture to Guadalajara. This study abroad opportunity has certainly been a “game-changer” in our relationship with ASFG … and certainly in the lives of our students.”

Catherine Cook began the 2013-2014 school year with a population of 523 students, the largest enrollment in the school’s history. We have also seen the highest retention in re-enrollment since the school’s inception. Of the students eligible to re-enroll, we have retained 89%.

Our population comes from 35 different zip codes. Seventy five percent of our community lives in the seven zip codes surrounding the school. We increased our Senior Kindergarten by adding an additional section, opening the school in 2013 with four Senior Kindergarten classrooms. Our Lower and Middle Schools have seen the largest growth in the last five years, increasing by 29% and 39%, respectively. Comparing our opening enrollment in 2003 of 292 students to our opening enrollment in 2013 of 523 students, the school has grown 79% in the last 10 years.

On June 6, 2014, Catherine Cook proudly celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2014. Teachers, families, and friends gathered to recognize the academic achievements of our 8th Grade class. The day began with a Pinning Ceremony, where Alumni welcomed the graduates to the Catherine Cook Alumni Association. The Graduation Ceremony included remarks from Susan Seyfarth Lovejoy, CCS Board Chair and Michael B. Roberts, Ed.D., Head of School. Allie Laurenson was the student speaker and Jarrett Payton, former NFL player and son of Walter Payton, delivered the commencement address. Mr. Payton spoke with warmth and fondness about enjoying the moments that define us. He told a moving story of generosity, reminding us all to cherish the time we have with family, teachers, and community. In addition to honoring the graduates, Cory Stutts, Head of Middle

School, conducted the Bridging Ceremony, an annual tradition welcoming the 4th Grade students to Middle School. We congratulate members of the Class of 2014 for all they have accomplished during their years at Catherine Cook and wish them the best as they matriculate to the following outstanding high schools.

Each spring, students in 4th Grade participate in the Ancient Egypt Unit, a comprehensive project that challenges their research, creative, and presentation skills. Teachers introduce this Unit in late winter as it has many cumulative goals and opportunities to share with their classmates before the final presentation.

Each grade in Lower School features a project in the spring that showcases our students’ progress and learning capacity for larger, more intensive projects. For example, 2nd Grade classes engage in projects about American Indians and 3rd Grade classes delve into Chicago, its history, and its neighborhoods. The spring project is complex and requires

more of our students’ time, effort, and inventiveness every year, preparing them for the challenges they will face in Middle School and beyond.

The 4th Grade Ancient Egypt Unit relies on successful research (on safe Internet sites and in books), note taking skills, time management, public speaking practice, and follow-through. Students choose a topic in which they will develop expertise, conduct research, and organize what they’ve learned into categories. All research is done at school; the only parent help students can receive is with the creation of their 3D visual, a recreated object of antiquity, diorama, or other small artifact to accompany their presentation at the conclusion of the Unit.

In addition to the 3D visual, students write a 5-6 paragraph essay about their Egyptian topic. The most successful projects show a consistent process from start to finish with clear organization of thoughts and excellent time management. Sunni Kitson, who has been teaching this Unit for five years, stated, “They always find out things I didn’t know. At the end of the Unit, they know more than we do!”

The final component of the Unit is an afternoon of “tours” in which the students are visited by fellow students from every grade at Catherine Cook, faculty, staff, and parent friends. Dressing up in costume is optional but always an innovative touch to the experience. Students have practiced their speeches and are excited for a chance to share what they have learned. If they do not know the answer to an audience question, they know which of their classmates can help to answer it.

The Ancient Egypt Unit is a dynamic, visually stimulating experience meant to reflect our students’ growth as they conclude their final year in Lower School. The skills they learn about research, time management, and process directly contribute to their achievement in the History Fair and other increasingly demanding projects they will encounter in Middle School. We build on our students’ enormous capacity for learning every year at Catherine Cook, ensuring that they will be well-prepared and excited to encounter what life outside of school has in store.

Beginning in the fall, students in Senior Kindergarten participated in an Identity Unit, learning how to see themselves and how they are seen by others. This Unit launched conversations that continued through the year. “The Identity Unit is a really appropriate way for young children to explore their differences and similarities at a time when they’re beginning to develop their identities as learners,” said Head of Early Childhood Education, Dr. Jean Robbins.

This year’s Identity Unit has inspired teachers in Preschool and Junior Kindergarten to begin incorporating identity work into their classrooms. Preschool classes begin with the concept of “me,” Junior Kindergarten students discuss the concept of “family,” and Senior Kindergarten students build off both concepts for more sophisticated learning about themselves and who they are in the world.

What shapes our identities? Aspects like values, culture, race, and family come into play as students learn the differences between personal and discerned identity. They are given a chart of typical personal aspects such as “boy,” “athlete” or

“Italian” that they will add on as the year progresses, creating a cumulative array of ways to identify themselves and others. Senior Kindergarten teacher Rachel Hill explains that this format allows them to “broaden their understanding of who people are, as even adults get a very narrow view of culture in daily life that can sometimes lead to stereotypes.” Children learn that people are “a much deeper river than they realized.”

The idea that it is okay to be different was reinforced throughout the Unit. Senior Kindergarteners and their 2nd Grade Book Buddies used iPads and Book Creator to make books celebrating how they are alike and how they differ. They interviewed members of the faculty

and compared what they knew about them to what the individuals had to say about themselves, presenting their videos at a morning assembly.

Learning about differences in perception and building confidence in how we view ourselves is a large part of personal identity development. Senior Kindergarten teachers Rachel Hill and Amanda Burns presented this curriculum for the 2014-2015 school year at the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of

Young Children) conference. Sharing the Identity Unit with teachers from around the country gave the teachers great feedback and encouragement. Attendees commented that this curriculum integrates content knowledge, social emotional learning, and cultural competence skills overall.

“Students are encouraged to assume the role of producer, rather than consumer, of digital media and electronics.”

— Director of Innovation JD Pirtle

Already recognized as an educational technology leader in Chicago and beyond, in 2014 Catherine Cook built a state-of-the-art IDEA Lab and AV Studio to promote learning and discovery for students in Preschool through 8th Grade. Funding for these new spaces came directly from the 15th and 16th Annual Gala Paddle Raises, generating more than $250,000 total.

IDEA LABIDEA (Innovation, Design, Engineering and Arts) is a school-wide, cross divisional program that promotes design and computational thinking and doing through current century skills such as programming and electronics. Catherine Cook integrates these exciting capabilities with our talented and creative teaching staff. Conceived of and led by Director of Innovation JD Pirtle, the IDEA Lab features a variety of innovative equipment including 3D printers, a laser cutter/engraver, a 25 million-pixel interactive digital display wall, robotics, sewing equipment, and traditional shop tools.

“Students are encouraged to assume the role of producer, rather than consumer, of digital media and electronics,” said Mr. Pirtle. “In this evolving role, students and educators explore the ever-expanding world of computational devices that surround us and are integrated into many aspects of daily life.”

AV Studio Students will also be able to explore their creativity in recording technology, art, and music in the AV Studio, led by Director of Education Technology Brian Puerling. From Preschool through 8th Grade, students have access to developmentally appropriate resources such as professional cameras, audio/video mixing equipment and a green screen, with separate recording and editing spaces.

“The AV Studio provides a space where our students can use a wide variety of resources for their projects,” said Mr. Puerling. Meeting with teachers to discuss their schedule and curriculum, Mr. Puerling determines when use of the Studio can be best integrated with projects already planned for the school year. Typically students have the choice to work individually or collaboratively so that the work showcases their growing skills and capabilities, as well as their familiarity and mastery of advanced tools.

The new spaces, equipment, and curricula made possible by the IDEA Lab and AV Studio will be a tremendous influence on our students’ education, providing them with access to resources unmatched by Catherine Cook’s peer schools. As we explore the possibilities and set new challenges for ourselves with these resources, we are truly beginning to learn that anything we can imagine is possible.

Construction for the New Wing phase of Catherine Cook expansion was finished in summer 2014. The New Wing is intuitively designed, technologically advanced, and focused on expanding and enhancing our educational facilities to properly support the world-class education we deliver.

In 2009, Catherine Cook embarked on an ambitious capital campaign, raising funds in the school’s community to build and outfit the New Wing, a 25,000 square foot structure joined to the existing school. Thanks to the generous support of the school’s families, $6.6 million of the $10.35 million goal had been raised by the end of fiscal year 2014 for the New Wing expansion. Fundraising for the campaign continues into the 2014-2015 school year.

GENERAL CHAIRSColleen and Ron Bess Sarah and John Garvey Linda and Dennis Myers

OPERATING CHAIRSLisa Coconato and Shelly KulwinCecil Booth and Danny SharpStephanie and Richard Sherman

The Catherine Cook community has already begun to utilize the full extent of the New Wing’s capabilities, ensuring unlimited potential for current and future students.
