Whoosh……………….And summer is over! I have been busy, rested on vacation and now it’s down to

business. I have missed the kids and many of you that have been so busy that I haven’t gotten to see you! We

have so many exciting things going on so make sure you keep up by reading this entire Newsletter so you don’t

miss out!

Our Synod launched a wonderful “Marks Of Discipleship” program last year. They include after the

Introduction: Give, Invite, Serve, Study, Encourage and Worship. As disciples of Jesus Christ we are to

follow Him by taking each of these “marks” seriously. Beginning in September we will look at one a month

concentrating on being disciple of Jesus Christ. Be in prayer about each of these as we walk together as

disciples.

And speaking of Worship and Serving, our 2nd

Annual “God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday” is September 7th

.

Last year it was a great success! We wore our “First Lutheran Church” T-shirts (we will have a limited amount

at the church to buy if you desire) to church and for all of the day.

Because, after church and our Worship of God, we spent time together in Community after eating at the Lord’s

Table, we ate together at church. And then, because the church is not only the building, we go out in service to

others in our community. We are the hands and feet of Jesus Christ.

This year we have many projects to participate in and we will need many hands. We will gather after our work

and share a Root Beer Float and reflect on our day. This is a day where from the very young to the very old, we

can all work together in ministry. And it is a blessing for those who have the work done and for those who do

the work. It would be worth your while to attend with your kids.

Also: Confirmation, Sunday School with an open house after church on September 14th

after church so plan on

attending, First Communion classes (registration required), Youth Group, and Faith In Action will be beginning.

So if you haven’t received information or have questions please contact me or the Church office for help. We

also need volunteers and prayer for all of these activities.

Beginnings are wonderful. I look forward to this year as we look to what God has in store for all of us!

I can’t believe summer is over and it is time to start back up with all of our

activities. I would like to thank the congregation, parents, youth, and Shawn O and

Matt B. for an AMAZING mission trip, I feel very blessed to watch and be a part of

our youth’s faith journey. Thanks, love and blessings, Mindy

Faith in Action: We will be starting our 10

th!!! year of Faith in Action (hard to believe!) on September 24

th. As

always we can use volunteers in any way you may feel able. All signup sheets, registration

forms and information is on table in the narthex. Please invite every child you know to be a

part of our program.

Student Leadership Team: Applications are available to all 9

th – 12

th graders for the Student leadership team. Youth who

are selected will be trained to help plan and lead our Youth and Family Ministry activities. We

will also be taking applications to serve on the boards and a youth representative for church

council (11th or 12

th grader) Please pray for these youth as we prepare them to become leaders

in the church and the community. Applications will be on Youth bulletin board.

!! We will be using a fun and educational Curriculum which makes the lessons easy to teach and

to learn. Watch for registration forms and more details!

Youth Group: Youth Group this year will be Wednesday evenings from 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. starting on Sept. 17

All youth 7th

– 12th

grade and their friends are welcome. We will be doing bible lessons, service

projects and fun activities. If you are interested in helping in any way please let me know.

Date to mark on your calendars! September will be the deadline to sign up for the national

youth gathering next summer in Detroit!

First Communion Classes Offered.

I was approached by some members to consider offering First Communion, or the Sacrament of

the Altar, to children younger than the age of Fifth Grade. This is the practice of many churches.

In the past I have offered it to children whose parents and I both agree that they are ready to

participate and to come to the table of Holy Communion. This was supported by the Church

Council. This would require classes and the approval of parents beginning with the First graders and up. Please talk to

me if you have and questions. If you are interested in your child having these classes fill out the registration form and

send them into the office so that we might plan for class sizes. Classes will be held on September 8th and

15th after school.

Holy Communion Classes will be offered to those children grades 1 and up if they have not had education on this as of

yet. These classes are the beginning of our learning about Holy Communion and no matter the age we grow and learn

more about this every day.

Parents are welcome to attend and see the program.

We will celebrate your child’s First Communion on Sunday, September 21st at worship at 9:30 am. Please mark that special day on your calendar.

experience, this is just part of a writing she did.

Whenever I think back to the Chicago mission trip, I

literally cannot contain my smile. For me, this

mission trip came at a critical time in life, a

crossroads of sorts. This amazing and beautiful trip

came just a month before I would go off to college to

figure my life out. And you know what one of the

best parts of this trip was? I left myself, my worries

and my thoughts of the coming future at the doorstep

of First Lutheran in Hinckley, Minnesota.

One thing that stood out to me was the very first

question Pastor Tomas asked each and every one of us, and that was what our "faith story" was.

He asked us outright how our relationship with God and the church was and what faith is to us.

A complete stranger stood in front of us, asking these questions, not just for his benefit but for

our own. And that was just the

beginning.

….

I really do think we each took away something from this week, whether it was that we no longer

like ham and cheese sandwiches or something a bit deeper, like how it's up to us to be a "demo"

or example to others of who Jesus is. I know I learned to let go of the thoughts that aren't

helping anyone and to let God take control. If we put our lives in His hands, and

truly live for Him, then what harm can come to us? Even though this amazing week was hot and

filled with a few challenges here or there, it definitely turned out to be a successful mission trip

in my eyes. What an experience! And how blessed was I to experience every second of it?

September 14th directly following the church service. Activities and

snacks will be provided for children ages 3 years thru second grade,

along with an opportunity to register for Sunday School and meet the

teachers. If you have a child who is older than second grade who

would like to participate, they can sign up to be a classroom mentor

on the calendar that will be available *****

Community Dinner was a success. We served 98 people (21 more than last time) with a

fabulous meal that was created and prepared by Judy Peterson and Charles Mans. Our church

had a wonderful team of hardworking adults and children that helped greet, prepare, set-up,

serve, do dishes and clean up after the meal. Judy also delivered food to “A Place for You”

and they were very thankful. The Free Farmers Market had a huge variety of produce that the

people loved. We received donations the Sunday before and free-will offerings at the meal in

the amount of $237.75. With donations of food and offerings we had enough to cover this

second meal and some for the next meal. A big thank you and hug to everyone that donated,

participated and volunteered. Thanks to God for providing us with what we needed for food,

finances and friends to provide this meal for our community. *****

Thank you to Jan and Steve Chaffee for donating a picnic table for our backyard. It will get a

lot of use.

Thank you to everyone for praying for Ron since his injury and surgery. Thank you for the

cards, great food, the beautiful quilt and rice heating pad. We have a wonderful church

family.

We received a thank you from “A Place for You” for the donation of the old Bunn

Coffeemaker. They really appreciated it.

It is with great joy that we announce to you our new Northeastern Minnesota Synod

Director for Evangelical Mission is the Rev. John Dietz. A few years ago, our church,

the ELCA, committed itself to providing a person in each synod who would work with

bishops to nuture congregations as center for evangelical mission. Pastor Dietz will be

preaching and holding forums in our congregations, gathering leaders for action and

working in natural clusters of congregations as well as individual congregations.

Congratulations and welcome to Rev. John Dietz and his wife Ashley.

The Church Library has some new books to check out. A nonfiction

biography, Bonhoeffer by Eric Metaxas, tells the story of Bonheoffer, a

pastor and author, who worked to disassemble Hilter and his Third Reich

from the inside. Also new are four large print novels. One is Seasons of

Tomorrow by Cindy Woodsmall. There more are by favorite authors;

The Bridge by Karen Kindsbury, The Last Bride by Beverly Lewis, and Child of Mine by

David and Beverly Lewis. Directions for checking out books are posted in the library.
