Summer Assignment Math Facts

Additional skills to review over the summer would be basic addition and subtraction facts. In second grade, we assess the students often on their speed and accuracy of the basic math facts. Math Fact Café This site can be used for addition and subtraction times drills (30 facts in 1 Minute.)

SplashLearn This site offers many different math skills. Parents have the ability to set weekly goals and access reports that track your child’s progress. We suggest 30 minutes per week. www.splashlearn.com

Reading Information As you know, each child’s reading levels develop at different rates. Some of these titles or authors may seem too easy or too difficult for your child. Please encourage your child to read this summer by choosing appropriate reading material and read as much as possible together. If your child picks a book you think may be too hard, have him/her read a full page aloud to you. If there are five or more mistakes while reading, the book is probably too difficult. If there are less than five errors, the book should be appropriate. Read as many books as you can this summer. Please read both fiction and nonfiction books. All children will be using

the Accelerated Reader Program in Second Grade. Epic book This site offers many books for the children to listen to or read on their own. A Daily Reading Log is available to track minutes spent reading. We suggest reading for at least 15 minutes a day. www.getepic.com Reading aloud to your child is very important also to help develop listening comprehension. We suggest the following titles: Gooney Bird Green by Lois Lowry Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo Clementine by Sara Pennypacker Dory Fantasmagory by Abby Hanlon
