Habitat for Humanity Take a drive by to check out Habitat for Humanity’s progress with homes being built on Gerling Street and Schenectady Street. Locations can be found on the local Habitat’s website: www. hfhscny.org Habitat for Humanity ReStore will be having a Special Summer Sale beginning Thursday July 17th through Saturday July 19th. Anyone interested in great deals on new and used household items, furniture, appliances, building material, etc. will want to visit the store, especially during this event. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is in need of summer volunteers. Many of the regularly scheduled volunteers travel during the summer months and more volunteers are needed. Consider if you might enjoy working a four-hour shift at the ReStore, whether once a week or even once a month. Habitat would appreciate your service. The store is open from 10 – 5 Thursday and Friday, 10 – 2 on Saturday. There is also a need for someone to assist with truck runs on Wednesday afternoons from 1PM to approx. 5PM or Saturday mornings from 8:30AM to approx. noon. Assisting with truck runs require more “heavy lifting” than working at the store but is always an adventure. You may also find a friend to ride “shotgun” and put together your own crew. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Randy Sparrow or call Habitat directly at 395-3412.

“Those Things” Joe Yang moved away from his hometown long ago and was not aware of the fact that the monthly bulletin of his home church has assumed a new name, “First Things”. Well, his first book, Those Things was published in January of 2009. One can’t help but wonder if all great things do rhyme somehow? Joe is a son of Walter and Alison Yang; he had attended our church since fifth grade, was confirmed at the First Reformed Church, and had been benefited by the youth group ministry under the leadership of Kent Bushman. Joe graduated from Niskayuna HS with honors and went on to Ithaca College. Joe also received a Master’s from NYU. Please check out his website at www.joe-yang.com. You will find out more about Joe’s journey into being a writer. Summer vacation is the best time to read Those Things which is available at the Faith book store at a discount price of $11; the proceed from the first 10 books will be donated to the church youth group fund.

Spiritual Check-Up by Bill Levering

In a sermon recently, I suggested that we all consider a check-up for our spiritual health as important as our physical health. There are dozens of approaches to this kind of assessment. Here is mine: Patient History Before any check-up begins, we usually sit in the waiting room filling out a form informing the physician of our family health history. Our psychological/emotional/spiritual history is important in considering our current condition. We know that there is a deep imprinting of certain patterns of response and that many conditions are genetically inherited. We like to imagine ourselves as fiercely independent, but the facts of the matter are that we are dramatically affected by the who’s and how’s of our upbringing. Just like the waiting room clipboard list, there are a number of things about your family of origin to consider when you are reviewing your spiritual health and possible prescriptions. We are influenced by our parents and things that have happened to us, but our lives are not static. We heal and recover from problems and situations, but knowing that the scars are there is important for future health. We believe in a God of redemption and resurrecting power, and a God who seeks to know us completely.

Is something out of balance or anemic? Are you too sweet? Reflexes How often do you put off important things? Do you react without thinking things through? How predictable are you? Hearing When was the last time you learned something new? From whom can you accept criticism? Do you stay tuned to what is happening in the world? Notice that this check-up is all about you and that there is an equally interesting look at how our behaviors affect others. Let me know if you would like to talk about anything these questions bring up.
