Pope Francis continues to amaze by his travels and his constant message of dialogue and peace in a world that waits in deep longing for both. He was recently in Egypt, a country that has seen its share of violence in past years and said that he

hoped that the Egyptian people would view him as a “messenger of peace, and a pilgrim traveling to that land that gave refuge to the infant Jesus and his parents.” He travels as a pilgrim and that word pilgrim implies a person who is on the way, who has not yet arrived, and who is open to coming to know God while “on the way.” And he refers to the land of Egypt not in hostile terms, but as the land that provided a home and a resting place for the Holy Family as they fled King Herod for safety in Egypt. Our pope always seeks out what is best in people, always seeks to find common ground, always refers to a God who is boundless in love and mercy and forgiveness. He is a voice that shines a light in a dark world – who else in the world speaks in this way today? As friars we see ourselves as pilgrims in the world, as being “on the way” in every sense of that phrase. Last week we learned that one of our friars in Peru, Fr. Mariano Gagnon, had died in Lima. I met Fr. Mariano when I was studying Spanish in Lima in 1997. He invited me to come with him to the Amazon to visit the Ashaninka Indians, who lived deep in the Amazon. We took a bus over and through the Andes Mountains to a jungle town called Satipo, and took a flight to a clearing in the jungle where we were welcomed by the Ashaninka (one of whom, I remember, had a New York Knicks t-shirt, a jarring sight to see in the middle of the Am-azon!). I had a hut to stay in for the night, with a cot, and a mosquito net over the cot, and I remember Mariano telling me – much to my alarm – that snakes had been known to drop onto the mosquito net during the night. Nothing like that happened. The experience was an eye-opener for me as a young friar, hearing Mariano talk about his experience of being among the Ashaninka, and seeing the way he lived among them and accompanied them on their own “way.” Congratulations to all who received first communion this weekend and last and thank you to all who helped prepare these children for this important day. Blessings on your week!

W hen you lose a loved one, time seems to stop and then to drag on and on and on. Nothing feels the same-noises are too loud, food is too

hard to swallow and everything is just too hard to compre-hend. And so we offer a safe place to come and share these burdens, these feelings of overwhelming sadness and ways to cope with the grief. It’s called Good Grief.

During our latest session, we had folks who came together after losing spouses, parents, and children. At first, sharing can be difficult, but with our facilitators, Marsha Riely and Nan Trotta, the sharing got easier and there was even some laughter. While sharing ways to cope with sleepless nights, everyone agreed that the Hallmark Channel had the best options!

As we neared the end of the 6 sessions, the sharing really increased. Here are some of the comments the participants wanted to share with you:

“Even though my mother and I lost the same person, I’ve come to realize that her grief is so different from mine. She lost her husband and I lost my Dad, but her grief is so much greater because Dad was with her all the time.”

“My husband and I agreed that rainbows would be a sign that he was okay after he passed away. I never realized how many rainbows there are – even in my house! One day I was crying because I’d never feel his arms around me and as I looked down, there was a rainbow across my waist – as if he was behind me and holding me.”

“I always find the program comforting, helpful and a won-derful time to share with other who are grieving – no mat-ter for whom or what stage.”

If you’re grieving, please don’t grieve alone. Sign up for our Fall Good Grief series. There are also so many great local resources. Contact me at [email protected] or 919-847-8205x241 and let’s do this together!

A Day in the Life

U p at 5:00am, dress in the dark and eat a small cold breakfast. Board the van to the fields at 5:45 unsure of where you will be working that day. 6:00am - begin harvesting tobacco, fruits

and/or vegetables, most days in full sun, 80 degrees. Pick as fast as you can, if you don’t you may not get a break. 9:00am - take off the trash bag you wear to protect yourself from the pesticides and take a 10 minute water break. 12:00pm – eat your lunch in the fields among the plants, with the pesticides on your hands because there is no soap and water available to wash. 4:00pm – your second and final water break, this one for only 5 minutes. 7:00pm – board the van back to your trailer, exhausted after a 14 hour day, to make dinner and lunch for the next day, to wash your clothes and take turns showering and calling your family who you will not see for months. 9:00pm - hoping for a better night’s sleep so you can drag yourself out of bed tomorrow, for pay that on average is below minimum wage because most farm workers are exempt from the minimum wage laws in our country.

Such is a day in the life of a migrant farm worker in the fields of North Carolina - hard work, little pay, beautiful fruits and vegetables - for us.

Our Migrant Ministry here at St. Francis of Assisi serves our migrant brothers simply by being present and showing them we care by driving them to and from Mass at Our La-dy of the Rosary Parish in Louisburg each Sunday from June through September. One Sunday a month we also offer a Fiesta of food and fun for them.

Won’t you join us ease their burdens just a bit? bit.ly/sfamigrantministry2017

Thank you! Your kindness means so much! Contact Bruce Cartier at [email protected] or 919-900-0452 for infor-mation and also plan to attend an Orientation Meeting on May 25 at 7:00pm in Anthony Hall Founders Room.

May 15 St Vincent de Paul SVdP prevented a family from being evicted. The father/husband had to take a pay cut because the company’s sales were down. He couldn’t exist on his reduced salary so he found another job. He was short on his rent for April and as a result was facing eviction. He wouldn’t get paid on his new job until after the eviction date. We were able to assist them with the rent money they needed. The next meeting will be in the Padua Room of the Assisi Community Center beginning at 6:45pm.

For Help and Hope

O ur Lady of the Rosary parish in Louisburg, NC has the main food pantry in this poor and rural community where approximately 24% of the population live below the poverty line. Hundreds

of people each month have trouble stretching their income to cover food. They come to this food pantry for help but also for hope. A smile, a listening ear, and wishes for a good day with a bag of food may mean the difference between total despair and the will to go on, especially for many young Hispanic families in these troubling times. Won’t you help? On May 13/14 grocery bags will be handed out after all masses, and your donations may be dropped off at the truck in our parking lot the next weekend, May 20/21. Volunteers are needed to both hand out grocery bags and accept donations. Please sign up here if you can help: bit.ly/OLRfooddrivemay2017 Families are welcome! Needed items: Rice and maseca flour, dried beans, canned tomatoes, canned vegetables, canned fruit, maca-roni and cheese, canned meats, peanut butter and jelly, dry soup packages, juice, oatmeal or dry cereal, diapers (all sizes). Grocery store gift cards are also a great option. Checks made out to Our Lady of the Rosary parish are very much appreciated as well. For more information please contact Kathe Henke at [email protected]

Come away with Me. Whisper you dreams and sorrows.

I will hide them, Heal them,

Keep them safe Until the Bright Tomorrow.
