Hayden Boyd Hatch received the sacrament of holy baptism on Sunday, June 26 in the 11 a.m. worship service. Hayden is the son of Tim and Ginny Hatch, little brother of Sophie and grandson of Kemp Boyd. We joyfully recognize Hayden as a member of the family of God!

Baptism

Welcome New Members

Jackson FUMC welcomes Bobby and Sheila Arnold who joined on Sunday, June 12 in the 11 a.m. service. They are the parents of Abby Lackey and grandparents of Lucy, Sean and Noah Lackey. We rejoice in their decision to become a part of our church family!

Notes of Appreciation

To the people of Jackson FUMC:

I cannot adequately express how grateful Carrie, the kids, and I are for the many ways in which you have been a community of support, encouragement, and growth for us over the past two years and especially for the VERY generous way in which you sent us forward into the next chapter of our lives as we begin ministering in Ellendale. The prayers, gifts, and blessings that you offered were overwhelmingly plentiful! Our cups runneth over! Simply put: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

May God bless and guide you as you continue to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world!

Peace,Jeff Rudy

A Praise and Status Update

I want to thank the entire church (staff and congregation) for your support during my recent illness. Praise be to God for our church and community of such caring Christian people. Your caring and concern for me through prayers, cards, calls, food, and visits has carried me through this ordeal and I am blessed to report that after four more doctor visits this past week, I am doing great! My blood work is the best it has been in a couple of years, I am feeling much better, and I am out and about! Our God is good - and he is who he says he is! I have asked Sue Harvey to remove my name from the prayer list so that together we can concentrate on those who are in more need. You know I am very blessed - this is the second “serious illness” that God has allowed me to work through. Thanks be to God!

I would encourage you to do as I plan to do - make more of an effort to support those in need of our prayers and concern. Again, thank you - without your encouragement, love, and concern, I am not sure I could have had the results I have!

Newsletter Updateby Bobbie Mays,

Director of Communications

The First Edition newsletter will be moving to a monthly publication beginning in August. This recommendation has been approved by the church staff, the Communications Team and the Church Council.

Why monthly?• Mailed newsletters are not being received timely; therefore information is often outdated by the time newsletters are delivered to homes. Sometimes delivery takes as long as 10 days. • Program/Age Level Ministries regularly send out e-news and/or other communications weekly or as needed to keep members informed of what’s going on, serving opportunities, Bible studies, events and classes.• There is too much duplication of information when printed every two weeks.• Sunday bulletins, Friday e-blasts, Facebook posts, text messages, TV slides, and pulpit announcements are additional ways that information is being shared.• With monthly newsletters, publications will be made in the middle of each

month so that content is more timely for upcoming events in the following month.

The next newsletter will be published August 17. A few extra newsletters are always printed and placed at the receptionist desk for anyone interested in a copy. If you would like to be added to the e-news, you can visit the website, jacksonfumc.org and sign up under Media or you can e-mail [email protected] to be added to the list.

Whether informing you of events, Bible studies, classes, opportunities for serving, or sharing stories, your church newsletter will continue to provide news to encourage, equip and allow each of us to be involved and invite others to fellowship, to worship and to grow in our faith at Jackson FUMC!

Variance % should be 50% year to date. All categories but two are within 11% variance range. The one that is 143.2% (Misc. Income) is immaterial. The other departmental Income of 76.8% includes fluctuating accounts.

'Offering Christ: One Neighborhood at a Time’ was the theme for2016 Memphis Annual Conference

by Lane Gardner Camp, Memphis Conference Director of Communications

McAlilly is the resident bishop for the Nashville Episcopal Area of The United Methodist Church that includes the Memphis (West Tennessee and Western Kentucky) and Tennessee (Middle Tennessee) Conferences.

For the first time ever, Northside United Methodist Church hosted the conference. Delegates, along with family, friends and special guests, gathered to worship, learn, conduct business and celebrate accomplishments.

State-of-the-Church Address “Change is here, friends,” said Bishop McAlilly during his Monday state-of-the church address. He used the acronym VUCA to describe a world that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous and is greatly affecting the global United Methodist Church. McAlilly stated he is looking for “people who will see what is possible, not impossible,” and added, “In the next four years, we are going to build on the work God is doing.” His message included several examples of churches doing work that speak of a “thriving church,” not the “dying church” that receives so much attention. McAlilly reminded delegates, “Your church is a mission station. You need to take the emphasis off mission projects.” To engage the mission field, he said, “Turn missional gestures into missional encounters.” “We’ve never done it that way” is a phrase churches must eliminate to be agile and creative for the future, he said. “How am I going to give love away in my neighborhood?” was a question McAlilly asked all Memphis Conference clergy and laity to contemplate.

Recapping the Century:The Life of BartonBarton Webb will soon be celebrating his 100th birthday! It was my privilege one recent morning to sit down with Barton to talk about his life. This longtime Jackson FUMC member shared some highlights of these past years.

Barton was born on August 9, 1916 to Arthur Barton and Henrietta Eudora Webb in Oakfield, TN. He and his parents lived there until he was in the 1st grade when they moved to St. Petersburg, FL. Across the street from his family’s new home was neighbor, Bob Sharkey, a pitcher for the NY Yankees. Barton remembers lots of good times in his childhood when he would pass ball not only with Bob but when he got to play "catch" with Babe Ruth!

While it was a good town and good place, he'll never forget living through four major hurricanes. He vividly described one memorable scene of 50 ft. boats "blowing up in the air" and landing on the parking lot. Two hotels were demolished before his eyes and yet he and his family only had minor damage to their home.

The Webbs moved back to Jackson when Barton was in the 7th grade. Recalling his first day of school (chuckling while telling this), the teacher asked him to go to the chalkboard and diagram a sentence. He told her he didn't know how to do that. The teacher asked him, "Where did you go to school? Didn't they teach you to learn to diagram?" Barton admitted that probably he learned a little bit about it, but he sure didn't like it! Barton went on to graduate from Jackson High, attended Lambuth College a couple of years and then transferred to UT Knoxville for one year. His father got sick so Barton had to come back home to Jackson to run his business, the Phillips 66 service station located on Main Street and S. Royal Street. Barton soon started his own "Recapping" business for large trucks.

One day a friend invited him to ride to Medina with him as he was going to meet up with his girlfriend and thought maybe Barton could meet some girls, too. Just as they arrived in town, they both noticed this cute girl hurriedly walking in the rain. They rolled down the window and politely asked her if she wanted a ride. Barton said, "She jumped in the car!" Erlyn Bright and Barton dated for over six years. During that time Erlyn taught school in Arkansas. They married on August 31, 1939 in Tiptonville, TN. As Barton stated, "She jumped in for life!" They shared more than 70 years of marriage until Erlyn passed away in 2011.

During WWII, Barton and Erlyn lived in Panama City, FL. He worked as a civilian building "Liberty" cargo ships designed to transfer goods during the war. He recalls working for six months without a day off. It took thirty days to build a 443 ft. ‘plus 6 inches’ length, ship. Numerous boats were built and 4-5 were tethered to each other traveling the waterways carrying needed goods. One of the most exciting and amazing moments for him and his co-workers was watching Lt. Colonel Jimmy Doolittle practice take-off flights from an aircraft carrier in the Gulf. Little did Barton know that this pioneer aviator would lead the first raid on homeland Japan four months after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. After Barton's time in Panama City, they returned to Jackson to continue running his tire business..

If "Chat 'N Chew” sounds familiar, it was Barton Webb who owned it as a side business. Good friend, Willie Chandler shared the photo below and a letter dated July 9, 2013 to Barton from Sandra Morgan Williams thanking Mr. Webb for the $25 war bond she received in 1958 (the year the restaurant opened), for winning the contest naming it the Chat 'N Chew. She expressed gratitude to him "on behalf of the many 'once young people' who enjoyed having a place to meet friends, make new connections and for some, find their future spouses!" The Chat 'N Chew was the favorite "hangout" in South Jackson...a drive-in, car hop destination for great BBQ, burgers, shakes and fries!

In his spare time, Barton loved to fish with his good friend Lloyd Russell. Their fishing adventures and friendship grew over four years. But when Lloyd became sick and died, Barton lost his friend. One day sometime after his death, Barton was eating out and saw Dr. Bubba Driver. They talked a bit and then Bubba asked him about his fishing days. Barton said he hadn't been fishing since his friend's death. So, Bubba invited him to go fishing with him. For the next ten or so years, twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays, they had great fun fishing together. They had such a reputation for catching fish, word got out that if you were lucky, Barton might share some of their catch with you. One Sunday morning, Peggy Huffman approached Barton. "You give a lot of fish away, don't you?" she asked. With her winning smile, she said, "Put me on the list!" He carried her some fish and admitted there were 4 or 5 people in the choir (no names) who also got some fish!

For years, Barton enjoyed golf, regularly playing with Russell Rice, husband of Edna Rice and father of David Rice and Craig Stallings. The stories could go on and on of Barton's experiences and wonderful shared memories over the decades. This story would not be complete without mentioning the active lives that Erlyn and Barton had through First United Methodist Church in Jackson when Barton joined in 1929 and Erlyn joined after their marriage. They were members of the Dick Nunn Sunday School class and the year that Barton was class president, they averaged 105 in attendance and had over 150 on the roll! Barton still attends this class and he and Willie come weekly to the Men's Coffee and Conversation on Thursdays. Willie's admiration for Barton is his honesty and the many, many ways he has reached out and cared for neighbors and friends. Barton describes himself as a listener and he "tries to live his life as he should."

Barton and Erlyn adopted a son, Bobby and a daughter, Elizabeth. Bobby died as a retired Air Force Major while living in Arizona. Elizabeth and husband, Bobby Whitt, will celebrate their anniversary on August 7. Barton also has a grandson, Zachary Sevic. They reside in Jackson.

Music in worship: Welcoming former singers to the summer choir has been a joyous part of worship. The addition of intern Rose Black has been like a shot in the arm to both First Awakening and 11 a.m. worship. Her willingness to bless us with her violin has added beauty to both services. Even though the choir is on vacation from rehearsing throughout the remainder of July and into August, the invitation remains open to all who show up on Sunday morning to join us as we lead the congregation in worship.

Associate pastor, Lisa Harper, is blessing us with her beautiful voice and sweet spirit as she too leads us in the morning worship services. Her singing, and preaching, at Andrews Chapel was a treat which many in attendance enjoyed.

Sunday, July 17, is scheduled as Youth Sunday, with our youth participating in leading worship in both morning services. The adult praise team and the sanctuary choir, with youth participants, will help to lead the services. All are urged to come and support the youth of our church by joining them in leadership or worshipping with them from the pews.

Another Sunday to be excited about is our “Homecoming” Service scheduled for July 31 at 9:30 am (Note the time change) One service, with alive and energetic music, both oldies and contemporary songs, will add joyous sounds, along with the preaching by Dr. Jack Henton. Former pastors are being invited to be in attendance and to be recognized for their contributions during their tenure. You will not want to miss this great day in worship.
